The meta-analysis has become a widely used tool for many applications in bioinformatics, including genome-wide association studies. A commonly used approach for meta-analysis is the fixed effects model approach, for which there are two popular methods: the inverse variance-weighted average method and weighted sum of z-scores method. Although previous studies have shown that the two methods perform similarly, their characteristics and their relationship have not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we investigate the optimal characteristics of the two methods and show the connection between the two methods. We demonstrate that the each method is optimized for a unique goal, which gives us insight into the optimal weights for the weighted sum of z-scores method. We examine the connection between the two methods both analytically and empirically and show that their resulting statistics become equivalent under certain assumptions. Finally, we apply both methods to the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium data and demonstrate that the two methods can give distinct results in certain study designs.

Multiresponse optimization (MRO) seeks to find the setting of input variables, which optimizes the multiple responses simultaneously. The approach of weighted mean squared error (WMSE) minimization for MRO imposes a different weight on the squared bias and variance, which are the two components of the mean squared error (MSE). To date, a weighted sum-based method has been proposed for WMSE minimization. On the other hand, this method has a limitation in that it cannot find the most preferred solution located in a nonconvex region in objective function space. This paper proposes a Tchebycheff metric-based method to overcome the limitations of the weighted sum-based method.
Cumulative sum schemes based on a weighted score are considered for controlling the mean of a continuous production process; in which both the one-sided and two-sided schemes are proposed. The average run lengths and the run length distributions for the proposed schemes are obtained by the Markov chain approach. Comparisons by the average run length show that the proposed schemes perform nearly as well as the standard cumulative sum schemes in detecting changes in the process mean. Comparisons of the one-sided schemes by the run length distribution are also presented.

This paper suggests an efficient approach for stochastic bicriteria programming problem (SBCPP) with random variables in both the objective functions and in the right-hand side of the constraints. The suggested approach uses the statistical inference through two different techniques: In one of them, the SBCPP is transformed into an equivalent deterministic bicriteria programming problem (DBCPP), then the nonnegative weighted sum approach will be used to transform the bicriteria programming problem into a single objective programming problem, and the other technique, the nonnegative weighted sum approach is used to transform the SBCPP to an equivalent stochastic single objective programming problem, then apply the same procedure to convert stochastic single objective programming problem into its equivalent deterministic single objective programming problem (DSOPP). In both techniques the resulting problem can be solved as a nonlinear programming problem to get the efficient solutions. Finally, a comparison between the two different techniques is discussed, and illustrated example is given to demonstrate the actual application of these techniques.

The problem (P) of optimizing a linear function $d^Tx$ over the set of efficient points for a multiple objective linear program (M) is difficult because the efficient set is nonconvex. There are some interesting properties between the objective linear vector d and the matrix of multiple objectives C and those properties lead us to establish criteria to solve (P) with a linear program. In this paper we investigate a system of the linear equations $C^T{\alpha}$ = d and construct two linearly independent positive vectors u, v such that ${\alpha}$ = u - v. From those vectors u, v, solving an weighted sum linear program for finding an efficient extreme point for the (M) is a way of getting an optimal solution of the problem (P). Therefore the theorems presented in this paper provided us an easy way of solving nonconvex program (P) with a weighted sum linear program.

Due to the effect of indoor coverage problem, the QoS of the indoor users will be degraded dramatically, with the number of indoor users. The femto cell is a popular solution for such problems. Since the price of the femto base station is usually cheap enough, one can sets up huge number of base stations in a small indoor area to reduce the size of communication cell. In this way, the QoS of the indoor users can be improved significantly. Moreover, the data rate can also be increased. However, how to decide an ideal transmitting power according to the surrounding radio environment is not a trivial problem, that still has not been addressed well. If the transmit power of femto base station is too large, the interference to the macro users will be increased. Conversely, if the transmit power of femto base station is too small; the coverage of femto base station will be reduced. To address this problem, we propose a power configuration method in femto base station using Genetic Algorithm by investigating a new fitness function. Furthermore, we adopt the weighted sum approach to improve the user performance in different modes. The simulation results show that the proposed power configuration method can not only improves the downlink SINR, but also enhance the channel capacity for both the Macro cell systems and Femto cell systems compared with some conventional methods.
Response surface methodology (RSM) empirically studies the relationship between a response variable and input variables in the product or process development phase. The ultimate goal of RSM is to find an optimal condition of the input variables that optimizes (maximizes or minimizes) the response variable. RSM can be seen as a knowledge management tool in terms of creating and utilizing data, information, and knowledge about a product production and service operations. In the field of product or process development, most real-world problems often involve a simultaneous consideration of multiple response variables. This is called a multiple response surface (MRS) problem. Various approaches have been proposed for MRS optimization, which can be classified into loss function approach, priority-based approach, desirability function approach, process capability approach, and probability-based approach. In particular, the loss function approach is divided into univariate and multivariate approaches at large. This paper focuses on the univariate approach. The univariate approach first obtains the mean square error (MSE) for individual response variables. Then, it aggregates the MSE's into a single objective function. It is common to employ the weighted sum or the Tchebycheff metric for aggregation. Finally, it finds an optimal condition of the input variables that minimizes the objective function. When aggregating, the relative weights on the MSE's should be taken into account. However, there are few studies on how to determine the weights systematically. In this study, we propose an interactive procedure to determine the weights through considering a decision maker's preference. The proposed method is illustrated by the 'colloidal gas aphrons' problem, which is a typical MRS problem. We also discuss the extension of the proposed method to the weighted MSE (WMSE).
A new approach to the straightforward implementation of the unscented filter in a unit quaternion space is proposed for spacecraft attitude estimation. Since the unscented filter is formulated in a vector space and the unit quaternions do not belong to a vector space but lie on a nonlinear manifold, the weighted sum of quaternion samples does not produce a unit quaternion estimate. To overcome this difficulty, a method of weighted mean computation for quaternions is derived in rotational space, leading to a quaternion with unit norm. A quaternion multiplication is used for predicted covariance computation and quaternion update, which makes a quaternion in a filter lie in the unit quaternion space. Since the quaternion process noise increases the uncertainty in attitude orientation, modeling it either as the vector part of a quaternion or as a rotation vector is considered. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed approach successfully estimates spacecraft attitude for large initial errors and high tip-off rates, and modeling the quaternion process noise as a rotation vector is more optimal than handling it as the vector part of a quaternion.
This study will be a new attempt to quantify flood vulnerability taking into account uncertainty. Information obtained from the real world has lots of uncertainties. Therefore, this study developed an approach to quantify spatial flood vulnerability of Korea using Fuzzy TOPSIS approach. Also, Fuzzy TOPSIS were compared with TOPSIS and weighted sum method. As a result, rankings of some areas were changed dramatically due to the uncertainty. Spearman rank correlation analysis indicated that the rankings of TOPSIS and weighted sum method were almost similar, but quite different from ranking of Fuzzy TOPSIS. In other words, because applying Fuzzy concept in regional vulnerability assessment may cause a significant change in priorities, the model presented in this study may be a method of vulnerability assessment.
An algorithm for detecting a line segment in an image is presented using incremental pixel extension. We use a different approach from conventional algorithms, such as the Hough transform approach and the line segment grouping approach. The Canny edge is calculated and an arbitrary point is selected among the edge elements. After the arbitrary point is selected, a base line approximating the line segment is calculated and edge pixels within an arbitrary radius are selected. A weighted value is assigned to each edge pixel, which is selected by using the error of the distance and the direction between the pixel and the base line. A line segment is extracted by Jilting a line using the weighted least square method after determining whether selected pixels are linked or delinked using the sum comparison of the weights. The proposed algorithm is compared with two other methods and results show that our algorithm is faster and can detect the real line segment.
