Contact Force Estimation for a Polishing Brush (연마 브러시 접촉력 산출)

  • A new contact force estimation technique is proposed. Keeping the contact force at a certain level between finishing tool and the object is essential since the quality of the finished surface is very sensitive to the contact force during the finishing process. However, the contact force measurement cannot be obtained by simply installing load cells under machine table or in the middle of tool linkage. The reason is that the weight of the machine table and the tool linkage are much heavier than the force to be measured. To that end, a method for estimating disturbance is proposed for a system that is similar to the mechanism of the finishing machine, and the same method is applied to estimate the contact force of the brush-type finishing machine. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a small scale test set-up has been built and the method has been tested.

A Method for Estimating Local Intelligibility for Adaptive Digital Image Decimation (적응형 디지털 영상 축소를 위한 국부 가해성 추정 기법)

  • This paper is about the digital image decimation algorithm which generates a value of decimated element by an average of a target pixel value and a value of neighbor intelligible element to adaptively reflect the merits of ZOD method and FOD method on the decimated image. First, a target pixel located at the center of sliding window is selected, then the gradient amplitudes of its right neighbor pixel and its lower neighbor pixel are calculated using first order derivative operator respectively. Secondly, each gradient amplitude is divided by the summation result of two gradient amplitudes to generate each intelligible weight. Next, a value of neighbor intelligible element is obtained by adding a value of the right neighbor pixel times its intelligible weight to a value of the lower neighbor pixel times its intelligible weight. The decimated image can be acquired by applying the process repetitively to all pixels in input image which generates the value of decimated element by calculating the average of the target pixel value and the value of neighbor intelligible element.

Comparison Study of Sound Transmission Loss in High Speed Train

  • Many studies for improving the railway vehicle's performance and comfort such as speed, weight and noise are currently in progress. Improving the structural characteristics of the vehicle for greater noise insulation is considered important for reducing disturbance due to noise, but measuring transmission loss entails large costs. This study explores an alternative method for estimating and measuring the railway vehicle's transmission loss that involves on applying the numerical analysis coupled with scaled reverberation chamber measurement. The transmission loss measurement using scaled reverberation chamber was performed after the compensation value was found through 1mm thickness(1t) specimen. For numerical analysis, a commercially available acoustics solver VA ONE was used. The proposed method is found to lead to transmission loss measurement comparable to the measurements based on large-scale reverberation chamber. Thus, it can be argued that a reliable method has been developed for measuring railway vehicle's transmission loss.

ESTIMATES OF PHENOTYPIC AND GENETIC PARAMETERS FOR WEANING AND YEARLING WEIGHTS IN BALI BEEF CATTLE

  • Records on weaning (3803) and yearling weight (2990) of beef cattle (Bibos banteng) from the Bali Cattle Improvement Project were examined. A mixed model analysis involving all main non-genetic effects (village, year of birth, season of birth, age of dam, sex of calf, all significant interactions and age at weighing as a covariate) as fixed effects and sire nested within village as a random effect was undertaken. Variance components were estimated by Henderson's Method III. Paternal half-sib components of variance and covariance were used to estimate heritabilities of weaning and yearling weights, as well as their genetic and phenotypic correlations. Heritability estimates ($\pm$ standard error) obtained by Henderson's Method III for weaning and yearling weights were $.11{\pm}.03$ and $.13{\pm}.04$, respectively while the phenotypic and genetic correlations were estimated as .32 and $.64{\pm}.10$, respectively. The parameters estimated in this study were at the lower end of the range of reported values from various breeds. It is concluded that further information should be gathered to assist in estimating genetic parameters for other economic traits of Bali beef cattle and to provide more accurate estimates for weaning and yearling weights. These parameters should then be used to formulate a selection program to enable the genetic improvement of Bali Beef cattle.

Estimation of Slime Thickness of Bored Piles by Using Borehole Electrical Resistivity Method (시추공 전기비저항 기법을 활용한 현장타설말뚝의 슬라임층 두께 평가)

  • The slime, deposited in the bored pile due to falling soil particle, reduces the bearing capacity of bored pile and thus the stability of construction also decreases. The weight pendulum and iron have been used for estimating the slime thickness based on the subjective judgment and thus the previous method has a limitation of reliability. The objective of this paper is to suggest the method for estimating the slime thickness by using characteristics of electrical resistivity as scientific method. The temperature-compensation resistivity probe (TRP), which has a conical shape and the diameter of 35.7mm, is applied to the measurement of the electrical resistivity in the borehole during penetration. The field tests are carried out for estimating the slime thickness in the application site of bored pile. The slime thickness is calculated through the difference between excavation depth of borehole and measured data. Furthermore, the laboratory tests are also conducted for investigating effects of casing, time elapsing and relative density by using the specimen of slime. The laboratory test supporting the suggested method is reasonable for determining the slime depth. The paper suggests that the electrical resistivity method may be a useful method for detecting slime thickness and the method is expected to be applicable to various sites of bored piles.

A Study on Signal Estimation of Modified Beamformer Method using Perturbation Covariance Matrix (섭동공분산행렬을 이용한 수정 빔형성기 방법의 신호 추정에 대한 연구)

  • Transmission signal in wireless environment receives a signal in which a source signal, interference, and noise are mixed. The goal of this study is to estimate the desired signal from the received signal. In this paper, we have studied a method correctly estimating a target in spatial by modified beamformer method. The modified bemaformer uses an adaptive array antenna and perturbation matrix to obtain the optimal weight, and estimate the desired signal by radiating the beam in spatial. We estimate a desired signal of the target by improving resolution with the modified beamformer method which does not have complicated calculation amount. Through simulation, we compare and analyze the modified beamformer method and the MUSIC method with good resolution. In result of simulation, we showed that modified beamformer method has better resolution of 10degree than classical beamformer method and showed similar performance as the MUSIC method. The resolution of this paper was estimated to be about 5 degrees.

Estimation of Carbon Absorption Distribution by Land Use Changes using RS/GIS Method in Green Land (RS/GIS를 이용한 토지이용변화에 의한 녹지의 이산화탄소 (CO2) 흡착량 분포 추정)

  • Quantification of carbon absorption and understanding the human induced land use changes (LUC) forms one of the major study with respect to global climatic changes. An attempt study has been made to quantify the carbon absorption by LUC through remote sensing technology. The Landsat imagery four time periods was classified with the hybrid classification method in order to quantify carbon absorption by LUC. Thereafter, for estimating the amount of carbon absorption, the stand biomass of forest was estimated with the total weight, which was the sum of individual tree weight. Individual tree volumes could be estimated with the crown width extracted from digital forest cover type map. In particular, the carbon conversion index and the ratio of the $CO_2$ molecular weight to the C atomic weight, reported in the IPCC guideline, was used to convert the stand biomass into the amount of carbon absorption. Total carbon absorption has been modeled by taking areal estimates of LUC of four time periods and carbon factors for land use type and standing biomass. Results of this study, through LUC suggests that over a period of construction, 7.10 % of forest and 9.43 % of barren were converted into urban. In the conversion process, there has been a loss of 6.66 t/ha/y (7.94 %) of carbon absorption from the study area.

Development of Truck Axle Load Estimation Model Using Weigh-In-Motion Data (WIM 자료를 활용한 화물차량의 축중량 추정 모형 개발에 관한 연구)

  • Truck weight data are essential for road infrastructure design, maintenance and management. WIM (Weigh-In-Motion) system provides highway planners, researchers and officials with statistical data. Recently high speed WIM data also uses to support a vehicle weight regulation and enforcement activities. This paper aims at developing axle load estimating models with high speed WIM data collected from national highway. We also suggest a method to estimate axle load using simple regression model for WIM system. The model proposed by this paper, resulted in better axle load estimation in all class of vehicle than conventional model. The developed axle load estimating model will used for on-going or re-calibration procedures to ensure an adequate level of WIM system performance. This model can also be used for missing axle load data imputation in the future.

Multicut high dimensional model representation for reliability analysis

  • This paper presents a novel method for predicting the failure probability of structural or mechanical systems subjected to random loads and material properties involving multiple design points. The method involves Multicut High Dimensional Model Representation (Multicut-HDMR) technique in conjunction with moving least squares to approximate the original implicit limit state/performance function with an explicit function. Depending on the order chosen sometimes truncated Cut-HDMR expansion is unable to approximate the original implicit limit state/performance function when multiple design points exist on the limit state/performance function or when the problem domain is large. Multicut-HDMR addresses this problem by using multiple reference points to improve accuracy of the approximate limit state/performance function. Numerical examples show the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach in estimating the failure probability.

Suggestion of New Method for the Prediction of Shock Vibration (충격진동 예측방법에 관한 새로운 방법 제안)

  • In case of estimating the shocking vibration during the blasting demolitions, the weight and falling height of the structure, that is a potential energy, had been considered. But, this study presented a new equation which used the impulse concerning a falling weight instead of potential energy as a method of predicting the shock vibration. In this experiment, the data of the impulse were compared with the data of the potential energy by performing the free-fall, and all data were comparatively analyzed by the regression analysis method. Also, the method of the superposition theory, which is calculated by the diminution ratio according to distance, the free-fall difference according to height, and the time giving the shock to the ground according to the breakdown pattern, was compared with the previous vibration data occurring from the blasting demolitions in the same conditions. As a result, this study suggests that the impulse and the method of superposition theory be applied as a method of predicting the shocking vibration. Therefore, these results could be expected to estimate the shocking vibration more accurately than the previous method.
