The Effectiveness of Streaming Video with Web Based Text in Online Course: Comparative Study on Three Types of Online Instruction for Korean College Students

  • This study is to identify whether three types of online instruction (text-based, video-based, and video-based instruction without text) and age category have a different influence on students' comprehension and motivation. Online students were randomly assigned to one of six groups, and they attended two-week online lectures via Course Management System. The comprehension test and the short form of IMMS were implemented when 114 participants accomplished two-week online lectures. The results revealed that using instructional video in online instruction is more effective instructional medium than text only in order to promote learner's motivation. Besides, older adults aged 41-60 are significantly different from younger adults (21-40 years old) in terms of students' comprehension. Furthermore, three types of online instructions are likely to be influenced by age category.

  • While most researches for cyber counseling until now have been about counseling methods and the effects that teenagers utilize cyber counseling, there have been no efforts that store counseling contents, analyze them using features and technologies of web and use them effectively to guide students. Therefore, we propose a cyber counseling system that provides counseling information so that teacher may grasp students various interests and problems and thus helps to guide students. For this, we used XML. Since XML document can systematically create a structured information and represent a structure with meaningful information unit than the existing file-based information, it can be effectively used to manage, search and store documents. Thus, we implement a cyber counseling system using XML, which can effectively manage and represent the various analysis information of counseling.

  • Internet accelerates the speed of Information society causing changes the method and purpose of education. The word "life-long learning" is no longer a new tenn for many of the world citizens, and they ask for a system to fulfill their need to learn. Information communication technology enables and provides technical base for such needs. Web based cyber education, especially, is known to be an important and alternative instructional method to mediate learning at a distance. At the present, however, with the breakneck pace of growth and interests on Web-based distance education, there are no guidelines provided to assure the quality. In this study, we have identified guiding principles to design and develop quality assurance model for effective distance education. This is critical, especially in Korea, since 9 distance. education institutions have been accredited to offer degree programs starting 2001 spring semester. Using this model, distance education providers and consumers can develop or select effective on-line courses.

  • 본 논문에서는 월드와이드웹에 기반한 학습자 중심의 통합 가상교육시스템 CyberClass를 설계하고 구현한 방법을 소개한다. 기존의 가상교육시스템은 학습자 중심의 상호작용 유형을 분석하여 이에 따른 적당한 상호작용 모델을 제시하지 않고 기능면에서의 사용도구 및 방법만을 제시함으로써 각 기능들이 자연스럽게 통합되지 못하였다. 따라서 전통적인 교육 방식인 강의실 수업에 참여한 학습자들이 가지는 현장감이나 친밀감에서 오는 커다란 교육적 이득을 제공하지 못하였다. 본 논문에서 개발한 가상교육시스템 CyberClass는 학습자 중심의 상호작용유형을 분석하고 이를 기반으로 상호작용모델을 제시한다. 그리고 제시된 모델에 기반하여 학습자와 교수, 학습자와 학습자 나아가 학습자와 가상교육시스템간의 상호작용에 기반한 시스템을 설계하였다. 따라서 학습자의 상호작용 모델에 기반함으로써 학습 참여도나 학습 능률의 향상을 기대할 수 있다. CyberClass는 학습자 중심의 상호작용을 위해 비동기공유 기공과 동기고유 기능을 모두 지원한다. 이들의 공유 기능들은 유기적으로 결합하고 직관적인 학습자 인터페이스를 제공함으로써 학습자에게 기능의 다양성에 따른 학습의 부담을 줄이고 자연스런 학습과정이 유도되도록 하였다.

  • WWW으로 대표되는 인터넷과 정보통신기술의 발달은 컴퓨터 응용 및 컴퓨팅 환경에 상당한 변화를 가져왔으며, 여러 분야에서 이들 기술이 응용되고 있다. WWW 기반의 기술들이 교육분야에 적용 및 활용되어 EDUNET, OCU(Open Cyber University) , 유니텔의 사이버 고등학교 등, 기존의 교육 패터다임을 변모시키는 새로운 형태의 고육체계 구현을 통해 교육현장에 커다란 기여를 하고 있다. 이러한 가상 학습 환경에서의 교수-학습을 효율적이고 체계적으로 준비, 실시, 관리할 수 있도록 지원해주는 시스템을 가상학습 지원시스템이라 한다. 본 논문은 가상학습환경이 새로운 교수-학습환경으로 자리매김하고 있는 가운데 교수-학습의 효율성을 향상시키기위한 지원 시스템을 어떠한 관점에서 어떤 기능을 중심으로 설계해야하는 가와 기존 교실교육에 비해 효과적 학습을 유지하고 향상시킬수 있는 핵심요인들을 도출하기 위하여 학습전략을 비교 분석하고 그 결과가 어떻게 설계에 적용될 수 있는가를 제시하고자한다.

  • According to the appearance of various virtual websites using multimedia technologies for engineering education, the internet applications in engineering education have drawn much interests. But unidirectional communication, simple text/image-based webpages and tedious learning process without motivation etc. have made the lowering of educational efficiency in cyberspace. Thus, to cope with these difficulties this paper presents a web-based educational Java applets for understanding the principles or conceptions of digital logic systems. The proposed Java applets provides the improved learning methods which can enhance the interests of learners. The results of this paper can be widely used to improve the efficiency of cyberlectures in the cyber university. Several sample Java applets are illustrated to show the validity of the proposed learning method.

  • Research related to Web-based learning (WBL) has grown exponentially in the last decade. Scholars have explored a variety of areas related to WBL, including techniques, strategies and best practices. One area of particular interest to scholars is the potential of WBL to support and facilitative collaborative learning. Despite the continued exploration, there continues to be a concern related to the theoretical foundations of WBL. The purpose of this article is to explore how different theories may be used to guide research and inform practice in online collaborative learning. We integrate the major points drawn from current research and theory from a variety of perspectives so as to gain a better understanding of how learning is enabled by asynchronous modes of online collaborative learning. We then use this understanding to identify opportunities and challenges for theory development and research in WBL.

Moderating Effect of Academic Self-Efficacy and Learning Flow between Social Presence and Academic Achievement of Students in Cyber University Courses (사이버대학 강의에서 학생의 사회적 실재감과 학업성취 간에 미치는 학업적 자기효능감과 학습몰입의 조절효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine moderating effect of academic self-efficacy and learning flow between social presence and academic achievement of cyber university students. For this purpose, the 371 students of W cyber university were participated in the web-survey system for two weeks at the end of second semester in 2011. The results of this study through hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that social presence significantly predicted on academic achievement. Academic self-efficacy was not significant moderating variable between social presence and academic achievement. And Learning flow was used as a significant moderated variable in the relationships among social presence and academic achievement. Based on these study results, effective management strategies for improving cyber university students' academic achievement were proposed.

  • The cyber university, which authoring systems for digital contents using multimedia technologies ate used for its courses, is highlighted to be a promising alternative for the current off-line education system. As the demand for the authoring system is constantly increasing, many systems, which emphasize the developers' convenience only, are currently used. Since the generated digital contents using these systems are failed to draw the learners' active interaction with contents, the new authoring system is expected to be existed. This paper presents, develops, and implements the new contents authoring system by using programing languages and/or software tools based on the storyboard. The presented, developed, and implemented system mimics the face-to-face education in off-line system, induces the users' active interaction with contents, and the effective evaluation system to the users.
