  • News in the form of web data generates increasingly large amounts of information as unstructured text. The capability of understanding the meaning of news is limited to humans; thus, it causes information overload. This hinders the effective use of embedded knowledge in such texts. Therefore, Automatic Knowledge Extraction (AKE) has now become an integral part of Semantic web and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Although recent literature shows that AKE has progressed, the results are still behind the expectations. This study proposes a method to auto-extract surface knowledge from English news into a machine-interpretable semantic format (triple). The proposed technique was designed using the grammatical structure of the sentence, and 11 original rules were discovered. The initial experiment extracted triples from the Sri Lankan news corpus, of which 83.5% were meaningful. The experiment was extended to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) news dataset to prove its generic nature. This demonstrated a higher meaningful triple extraction rate of 92.6%. These results were validated using the inter-rater agreement method, which guaranteed the high reliability.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the overall web information seeking behavior of news reporters and analyze its correlation with parameters that characterize information needs, preferred sources of information, information technology and internet use and satisfaction. For this purpose, a survey of205 news reporters working at domestic newspaper companies, including daily newspapers, magazines, and online newspapers was conducted. News reporters' primary purposes of seeking web information were to simply check facts and collect overall background information. • Many types of information provided through the web including news contents contain unnecessary clutters. These clutters make it difficult to build automated information processing systems such as the summarization, extraction and retrieval of documents. We propose a system that extracts and summarizes news contents from the web. The extraction system receives news contents in HTML as input and builds an element tree similar to DOM tree, and extracts texts while removing clutters with the hyperlink attribute in the HTML tag from the element tree. Texts extracted through the extraction system are transferred to the summarization system, which extracts key sentences from the texts. We implement the summarization system using co-occurrence relation graph. The summarized sentences of this paper are expected to be transmissible to PDA or cellular phone by message services such as SMS.

  • In this paper, we propose the INDEM(Internet News Data Extraction Middleware) system for the removal of the unnecessary data in internet news. Although data on the internet can be used in various fields such as source of data of IR(Information Retrieval), Data mining and knowledge information service, it contains a lot of unnecessary information. The removal of the unnecessary data is a problem to be solved prior to the study of the knowledge-based information service that is based on the data of the web page. The INDEM system parses html and explores the XPath, and it is to perform the analysis. The user simply utilize INDEM by implementing an abstract class that provides INDEM, and can obtain the analysis information. INDEM System through this process delivers the analysis information including the main contents of news site to the users. In this paper, the INDEM system was adapted in a stand-alone and web service system and it was evaluated on the basis of 16 news site. As a result, performance of the INDEM system is affected in html source data size and complexity of used html grammar than the main news data size.

  • Web-ads often distract users' online activities. Web-ads even deter users from comprehending the website contents. As these irritated users try to avoid web-ads, advertising agencies make web-ads even more noticeable to grasp users' attention. The factors that attract users should increase web-ad performance. However, this study confirms that those efforts irritate users and decrease web-ad performance. Also, this study shows that irritated users eventually try to avoid re-visiting the websites. This study also confirms that excessive web-ads on Internet news websites bring more confusion to users than on e-commerce websites. This finding supports the importance of more sustainable web activities on the Internet news websites as users expect objective and fair contents. Based on these results, this study proposes the directions of web-ads activities for the common good and self-interests of the stakeholders.

  • Web mining can be broadly defined as the discovery and analysis of useful information from the World Wide Web. In this paper. we tried to analyze a user access pattern and designed a system which can supply useful information to users through the web mining, The proposed system can search the information of users pattern through the web site and news letters, and pass through classification of category through filtering, The fuzzy association rules are applied to the users who access recently, to each category that generated though these processes, and compares the generated sets to each users-access pages set, and it can send appropriate news letter to each user.
