  • In this study, we develop an algorithm to predict swell-like significant waves in the east coast of Korea using the directional wave gauge which is installed near Sokcho. Using the numerical wave model SWAN, we estimate wave data in open sea from the wave data observed through the directional wave gauge. Then, using the wave ray method with the open-sea wave data as offshore boundary conditions, we predict the swell-like significant waves at several points in the east coast of Korea. We verify the prediction methods with the SWAN and wave ray methods by comparing numerically predicted data against either target or measured data at the observation site. We can improve the prediction of the swell-like significant waves in the east sea of Korea using both the real-time wave measurement system and the present prediction algorithm.

Using the numerical wave model SWAN, we estimate wave data in open sea from the wave data collected by using the directional wave gauge. Then, using the wave ray method and SWAN model with the open-sea wave data as offshore boundary conditions, we predict the swell-like high waves at several major points on the east coast of Korea. We verify the prediction methods with the SWAN and wave ray methods by comparing predicted data against measured one at Wangdolcho. We can improve the prediction of the swell-like high waves in the east sea of Korea using both the real-time wave measurement system and the present prediction algorithm.

  • Waves are a complex phenomenon in marine and coastal areas, and accurate wave prediction is essential for the safety and resource management of ships at sea. In this study, three types of machine learning techniques specialized in nonlinear data processing were used to predict the waves of Korea waters. An optimized algorithm for each area is presented for performance evaluation and comparison. The optimal parameters were determined by varying the window size, and the performance was evaluated by comparing the mean absolute error (MAE). All the models showed good results when the window size was 4 or 7 d, with the gated recurrent unit (GRU) performing well in all waters. The MAE results were within 0.161 m to 0.051 m for significant wave heights and 0.491 s to 0.272 s for periods. In addition, the GRU showed higher prediction accuracy for certain data with waves greater than 3 m or 8 s, which is likely due to the number of training parameters. When conducting marine and offshore research at new locations, the results presented in this study can help ensure safety and improve work efficiency. If additional wave-related data are obtained, more accurate wave predictions will be possible.

  • This paper was proposed a wave path loss prediction algorithm using multilayer perceptron (MLP) model and wave propagation characteristic parameters for Wireless LAN in indoor radio environments. Receiving power was predicted by calculating indoor path loss in a Wireless LAN that has transmission power of 100mW and frequency of 2.4GHz, and was compared with measured. In the result of measurement shows that there is a difference between predicted and measured receiving power which can be reduced by an accurate analysis of the various path loss factors. In order to fix the access point(AP) positions was used the proposed a wave path loss prediction algorithm, and designed the optimum cell for Wireless LAN.

  • It is important for an ICRF full wave code to simulate the SOL (Scrape Off Layer) plasma as well as the core inside of the LCFS (Last Closed Flux Surface) for the precise prediction of the coupling between the antenna and the core plasma in tokamaks. To this end, a two dimensional full wave code based on a Fourier spectral algorithm has been developed. The spectral algorithm and procedures are described and the simulation results for the minority heating in KSTAR are reported including electric field, power absorption and power flux.

  • A leakage canceller and adaptive algorithm for FMCW Radar is presented. Because a strong leakage signal causes various problems in the transceiver and digital processor, specific FMCW radars are in need of a leakage canceller. The leakage canceller has an adaptive structure and the algorithm calculates the prediction vector and learns the adaptive coefficient simultaneously. The proposed algorithm an improvement of 10 dB in the cancellation performance.

  • A breakwater has always been an ideal option to prevent shoreline erosion due to wave action as well as to maintain the tranquility in the lagoon area. The effects of the impinging wave on the structure could be analyzed and evaluated by several physical and numerical methods. An alternate approach to the numerical methods in the prediction of performance of a breakwater is Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. In the recent decade many researchers have implemented several Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the prediction of performance, stability number and scour of breakwaters. This paper is a comprehensive review which serves as a guide to the current state of the art knowledge in application of soft computing techniques in breakwaters. This study aims to provide a detailed review of different soft computing techniques used in the prediction of performance of different breakwaters considering various combinations of input and response variables.

  • In this paper, the research contents and results related to the automation of the hull-form optimal design of container ships are summarized. A container ship is a ship that generally operates near Froude number of 0.26. To implement hull-form optimal design automation for ships operating at this speed, an optimization algorithm, a hull-form change algorithm, a ship performance prediction algorithm, an automation algorithm, and an iterative calculation technique were applied to develop a numerical analysis computer program that enables hull-form optimal design automation of the container ship, and it was named HOTCONTAINER. In this study, a sensitivity analysis algorithm was developed and applied to appropriately set design variables for hull-form optimal design. To understand the reliability and real ship applicability of the developed algorithm, a numerical analysis was performed on KCS(KRISO Container Ship), a container ship that has been studied in various ways worldwide. Consequently, the optimal ship was derived, and the wave resistance, wave pattern, and wave height of the target and optimal ship were compared. In conclusion, compared the target ship, the optimal ship a 47.63% decrease in wave resistance, and the displacement and wet surface area decreased by 0.50% and 0.39%, respectively.

  • A 2-D Fluent-based numerical wave tank(FBNWT) capable of simulating wave propagating and overtopping is presented. The FBNWT model is based on the Reynolds averaged Naiver-Stokes equations and VOF free surface tracking method. The piston wave maker system is realized by dynamic mesh technology(DMT) and user defined function(UDF). The non-iteration time advancement(NITA) PISO algorithm is employed for the velocity and pressure coupling. The FBNWT numerical solutions of linear wave propagation have been validated by analytical solutions. Several overtopping problems are simulated and the prediction results show good agreements with the experimental data, which demonstrates that the present model can be utilized in the corresponding analysis.

  • This study deals with the prediction of defect location which can be occurred in structure. The existing methods was very difficult to be applied to predict it, because of complex numerical formula. The triangulation method proposed in this study can predict the source location easily with small amount of data. The arrival time of wave can be directly converted into the distance between sensors. For this purpose, the propagation velocity was measured by Rayleigh wave, and the propagation behavior was analyzed. The welded workpiece is adapted to investigate for the consideration of jointed part in structure, The propagation velocity of signal was measured in welded workpiece and the revised algorithm of source location was proposed.
