  • The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been used in over 100 countries to estimate potential long-term soil erosion from the field. However, the USLE estimated soil erosion cannot be used to estimate the sediment delivered to the stream networks. For an effective erosion control, it is necessary to compute sediment delivery ratio (SDR) for watershed and sediment yield at watershed outlet. Thus, the Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion Control (SATEEC) was developed to compute the sediment yield at any point in watershed. In this study, the SATEEC was applied to the Sudong watershed, Chuncheon Gangwon to compare the sediment yield using area-based sediment delivery ratio (SDRA) and slope-based sediment delivery ratio (SDRS) at watershed outlet. The sediment yield using the SDRA by Vanoni, SYA and the sediment yield using the SDRS by Willams and Berndt, SYS were compared for the same sized watersheds. The 19 subwatersheds was 2.19 ha in size, the soil loss and sediment yield were estimated for each subwatershed. Average slope of main stream was about 0.86~3.17%. Soil loss and sediment yield using SDRA and SDRS were distinguished depending on topography, especially in steep and flat areas. The SDRA for all subwatersheds was 0.762, however the SDRS were estimated in the range of 0.553~0.999. The difference between SYA and SYS was -79.74~27.45%. Thus site specific slope-based SDR is more effective in sediment yield estimation than area-based SDR. However it is recommended that watershed characteristic need to be considered in estimating yield behaviors.

  • This paper presents the development and application of a riparian buffer zone design model(RBZDM). The model was developed as a decision-making tool for watershed management, by integrating geographic information system(GIS) and analytical hierarchy process(AHP) theory. Several factors for watershed management, such as pollution removal capacity, land aquisition cost, distribution of point and non-point pollution sources, and possibility of new pollution source location, were analyzed based on AHP theory. The vegetated buffer zone width was designed using GIS-based riparian buffer analysis. The developed model was applied to the Kyoungan Stream watershed, which is an important part of Paldang lake catchment area. The Kyoungan stream watershed was divided into sixteen subbasins. Six of them belong to the main stem, where the model was applied. Ten alternatives of buffer zone width and five hierarchial levels were designed. The relative importance and the relative preference were computed by pair-wise comparison of evaluation criteria given in hierarchial levels. The buffer zone width was determined by linear function of the given alternatives and relative preferences. From this study, it was determined that the six buffer zone widths of Kyoungan main stems would be 1,594, 1,744, 1,856, 1,782, 1,338, 1,780 meter, from upstream to downstream.

  • In this paper, we propose the segmentation method for detecting the facial region by using watershed based on depth information and merge algorithm. The method consists of three steps: watershed segmentation, seed region detection, and merge. The input color image is segmented into the small uniform regions by watershed. The facial region can be detected by merging the uniform regions with chromaticity and edge constraints. The problem in the existing method using only chromaticity or edge can solved by the proposed method. The computer simulation is performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The simulation results shows that the proposed method is superior to segmentation facial region.

  • This study is to delineate the watershed hydrological parameters such as area, slope, rain gauge weight, NRCS-CN and time of concentration (Tc) by using the Geographic Information Sytem (GIS) technique, and estimation of design flood for an ungauged watershed. Especially, we attempted to determine the Tc of ungauged watershed and develop simple program using the cell-based algorithm to calculates upstream or downstream flow time along a flow path for each cell. For a $19km^2$ watershed of tributary of Nakdong river (Seupmoon), the parameters including flow direction, flow accumulation, watershed boundary, stream network and Tc map were extracted from 30m Agreeburn DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and landcover map. And NRCS-CN was extracted from 30m landcover map and soil map. Design rainfall estimation for two rainfall gauge which are Sunsan and Jangcheon using FARD2006 that developed by National Institute for Disaster Prevention (NIDP). Using the parameters as input data of HEC-l model, the design flood was estimated by applying Clark unit hydrograph method. The results showed that the design flood of 50 year frequency of this study was $8m^3/sec$ less than that of the previous fundamental plan in 1994. The value difference came from the different application of watershed parameter, different rainfall distribution (Huff quartile vs. Mononobe) and critical durations. We could infer that the GIS-based parameter preparation is more reasonable than the previous hand-made extraction of watershed parameters.

  • In order to analyze cell images, accurate segmentation of each cell is indispensable. However, the reality is that accurate cell image segmentation is not easy due to various noises, dense cells, and inconsistent shape of cells. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an algorithm that combines marker-based watershed segmentation and ellipse fitting method for glioblastoma cell segmentation. In the proposed algorithm, in order to solve the over-segmentation problem of the existing watershed method, the marker-based watershed technique is primarily performed through "seeding using local minima". In addition, as a second process, the concave point search using ellipse fitting for final segmentation based on the connection line between the concave points has been performed. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we compared three algorithms with other algorithms along with the calculation of segmentation accuracy, and we applied the algorithm to other cell image data to check the generalization and propose a solution.

  • Nonpoint source pollutants from agriculture are identified as one of the main causes of water quality degradation in the United States. The Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) was used to simulate runoff, nitrogen, and sediment loads from an urbanizing watershed; the Polecat Creek watershed located in Virginia. Model parameters related to hydrology and water quality were calibrated and validated using observed hydrologic and water quality data collected at the watershed outlet and at several sub-watershed outlets. A comparison of measured and simulated monthly runoff at the outlet of the watershed resulted in a correlation coefficient of 0.94 for the calibration period and 0.74 for the validation period. The annual observed and simulated sediment loads for the calibration period were 220.9 kg/ha and 201.5 kg/ha, respectively. The differences for annual nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3$) loads between the observed and simulated values at the outlet of the watershed were 5.1% and 42.1% for the calibration and validation periods, respectively. The corresponding values for total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) were 60.9% and 40.7%, respectively. Based on the simulation results, the calibrated HSPF input parameters were considered to adequately represent the Polecat Creek watershed.

  • HSPF model based on BASINS was applied to analyze effects of watershed management measures for water quality conservation in the Hwaseong Reservoir watershed. The model was calibrated against the field measurements of meteorological data, streamflow and water qualities ($BOD_5$, T-N, T-P) at each observatory for 4 years (2007-2010). The water quality characteristics of inflow streams were evaluated. The 4 scenarios for the water quality improvement were applied to inflow streams and critical area from water pollution based on previous researches. The reduction efficiency of point and non-point sources in inflow streams was evaluated with each scenario. The results demonstrate that the expansion of advanced treatment system within wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and construction of pond-wetlands would be great effective management measures. In order to satisfactory the target water quality of reservoir, the measures which can control both point source and non-point source pollutants should be implemented in the watershed.
