  • Present study aims to investigate draft effects on hydro-elastic response of pontoon type VLFS(Very Large Floating Structure). A three dimensional higher-order boundary element method(HOBEM: Hong et al;1999, Choi, Hong and Choi; 2001) is extended to analyze elastic response of structures. Intensive numerical calculations were carried out for box type structure to investigate the draft effect on hydrodynamic forces on pontoon type VLFS. Main attention was paid to wave run-up along the waterline for various cases of draft scantling. It is found that the draft effects on the hydro-elastic response of pontoon type VLFS are important especially in short wave range and shallow water region.

  • In this study, the dynamic interaction between an Arctic Spar and drifting level ice is examined in time domain using the newly developed ice-hull-mooring coupled dynamics program. The in-house program, CHARM3D, which is the hull-riser-mooring coupled dynamic simulator is extended by coupling with the open-source discrete element method (DEM) simulator, LIGGGHTS. In the LIGGGHTS module, the parallel-bonding method is implemented to model the level ice using an assembly of multiple bonded spherical particles. As a case study, a spread-moored Artic Spar platform, whose hull surface near waterline is the inverted conical shape, is chosen. To determine the breaking-related DEM parameter (the critical bonding strength), the four-point numerical bending test is used. A series of numerical simulations is systematically performed under the various ice conditions including ice drift velocity, flexural strength, and thickness. Then, the effects of these parameters on the ice force, platform motions, and mooring tensions are discussed. The simulations reveal various features of dynamic interactions between the drifting ice and moored platform for various ice conditions including the novel synchronous resonance at low ice speed. The newly developed simulator is promising and can repeatedly be used for the future design and analysis including ice-floater-mooring coupled dynamics.

  • In this paper, wind load on a semi-submersible rig was investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). A maritime atmospheric boundary layer model for wind profile was implemented such that the wind profile shapes were retained throughout the computational domain. Wind load on the semi-submersible rig was calculated under the maritime atmospheric boundary layer and matched well with the results from wind tunnel test within a ±20% error. Overturning moments with variation of draft were investigated by decomposing into drag and lift components. It was observed that the contribution from lift to the overturning moments increased as the draft got higher. The majority of the lift components originated from deckbox which served as a lifting body due to the accelerated streamlines between waterline and the bottom of the deckbox.

  • A zinc mesh sacrificial anode cathodic protection method is recently being developed to protect the reinforced concrete structure in a marine environment. However, comprehensive information regarding the cathodic protection technology applied to reinforced concrete test specimens utilizing zinc mesh sacrificial anodes remains limited. Particularly, no research has investigated the effective range of sacrificial anode cathodic protection in a reinforced concrete structure regarding the transmission of protection current from zinc mesh sacrificial anode to the reinforced concrete structure, particularly concerning effects of temperature variations. This study examined the distribution of potential and current using a long single rebar and several segment reinforcing bars inside a horizontal beam. Vertical pile specimens were applied with a zinc mesh sacrificial anode to simulate concrete bridges or harbor structures. To check the effect of cathodic protection, cathodic protection potential and current of the reinforced concrete specimens were measured and 100 mV depolarization criterion test was performed. It was confirmed that effect of cathodic protection varied depending on resistivity and temperature. The cathodic protection test of pile specimens revealed that the maximum reachable range of cathodic protection current was 10 cm from the waterline as observed in the experiment.

  • In this study, research and empirical cases of floating offshore wind turbine systems with a tension-leg platform are investigated, and hydrodynamic and structural characteristics according to platform shapes and characteristics during transportation and installation are confirmed. Most platforms are composed of pontoons or corner columns, and these are mainly located below the waterline to minimize the impact of breaking waves and supplement the lack of buoyancy of the center column. These pontoons and corner columns are designed with a simple shape to reduce manufacturing and assembly costs, and some platforms additionally have reinforcements such as braces to improve structural strength. Most of the systems are assembled in the yard and then moved by tugboat and installed, and some platforms have been developed with a dedicated barge for simultaneous assembly, transportation and installation. In this study, we intend to secure the basic data necessary for the design, transportation, and installation procedures of floating offshore wind turbine systems with a tension-leg platform.

  • The present paper deals with characteristics of resistance performance according to the variation of synthetic ice thickness and hull form. The resistance test has been conducted with pack ice condition in Pusan National University towing tank. Stem angle has been chosen as main parameters for the variation of hull form characteristics, which is the most important factor especially in icebreaking cargo vessel. The serial comparisons of resistance test have been done with the variation of hull form parameter as well as with the different thickness of synthetic ice. The different trend of resistance performances with increasing of stem angle has been shown at each synthetic ice thickness. The present test results is expected to be confirmed by comparing the test results in ice tank in the near future.

  • In this study, the stability of fishing vessels get some change in accordance with the installation of LED luring lamp in comparison with metal halide luring lamp were investigated. Inclining test for 9.77 ton class of squid jigging and hair-tail angling vessel was performed in order to make a stability evaluation. A performance analysis of the target vessels to the stability on the basis of KST-SHIP program was evaluated. The results were as follows in this study. The stability of the fishing vessel by a metal halide such as LED and the like according to the result obtained by the inclining test is a slightly present difference, and the stability is not affected. The fishing vessel with LED lamp installed satisfies all the stability criteria specified in law and IMO rule. Compared to the metal halide LED lamp the increase of the height of the center of gravity and the initial transverse metacenter was caused. Due to the LED installation, the somewhat wider wind area of the waterline, which appears as a result, does not lead to an actual increase in rolling period. But then it is necessary to be designed on that the LED lamp shape reduces wind pressure area. Because of LED lamp installation, the GM value of vessels is increasing faster rolling cycle so causes a decrease in the sense that the crew is aboard.

  • Trawlers have to a sufficient towing force due to it's characteristics of the high performance. The newly constructed trawler with the conventional propellers shows the sufficient towing force, so that the propeller and engine are optimized. In the 1970s, many trawlers were imported from overseas by Korean fisheries industries. But the engine output degradation with year by year caused the trawlers to decrease the towing speed of the vessels. On the previous studies, the nozzle propeller had not so good efficiency with increasing of resistance in high-speed cruising operation over 15knots. But the trawling operation is just required the higher thrust and towing force, so that the nozzle propeller is very profitable for the it's effectiveness. A new nozzle propeller was designed for the 4,462G/T trawler, Dong-San, operated by Dongwon Industries Co., Ltd. to improve the towing speed, and the model tests were performed. The model ship and model propeller are preciously manufactured and used model tests in basin. The resistance test and propeller open water test were performed for the cases of the half and full loads. The required engine horse power and RPM were evaluated analytically by the speed-power curve, when the trawler was equipped with the nozzle propeller. The results of tests showed that the towing speed 4.85knots on the design load waterline requires the 200 engine RPM and 2,567ps in the delivered horsepower.
