Dimethyl ether (DME) is a new clean fuel as an environmentally-benign energy resource. DME can be manufactured from various energy sources including natural gas, coal, biomass and spent plastic. In addition to its environmentally friendly properties, DME has similar characteristics to those of LPG. Therefore, it is considered as an excellent substitute fuel for LPG, fuel cells, power plant, and especially diesel and is expected to be the alternative fuel by 2010. The experimental study of the direct synthesis of DME was investigated under various conditions over a temperature range of $220{\sim}280^{\circ}C$, syngas ratio 1.2~3.0. All experiments were carried out with a hybrid catalyst, composed of a methanol synthesis catalyst ($Cu/ZnO/Al_2O_3$) and a dehydration catalyst (${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$). The observed reaction rate follows qualitatively a Langmiur-Hinshellwood model as the reaction mechanism. Such a mechanism is considered with three reactions; methanol synthesis, methanol dehydration and water gas shift reaction. From a surface reaction with dissociative adsorption of hydrogen, methanol, and water, individual reaction rate was determined.

Solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) has a higher fuel flexibility than low temperature fuel cells, such as polymer electrolyte fuel cell(PEMFC) and phosphoric acid fuel cell(PAFC). SOFCs also use CO and $CH_4$ as a fuel, because SOFCs are hot enough to allow the CH4 steam reformation(SR) reaction and water-gas shift(WGS) reaction occur within the SOFC stack itself. Diesel is a good candidate for SOFC system fuel because diesel reformate gas include a higher degree of CO and $CH_4$ concentration than other hydrocarbon(methane, butane, etc.) reformate gas. Selection of catalyst for autothermalr reforming of diesel was performed in this paper, and characteristics of reforming performance between packed-bed and microchannel catalyst are compared for SOFC system. The mesh-typed microchannel catalyst also investigated for diesel ATR operation for 1kW-class SOFC system. 1kW-class diesel microchannel ATR was continuously operated about 30 hours and its reforming efficiency was achieved nearly 55%.

The production of CO-free hydrogen streams for feeding PEM-Fuel Cells using catalytic zeolite membrane reactors was analysed by means of selective oxidation. Tubular FAU (Na-Y) zeolite membranes, prepared by a secondary growth method and Pt-loaded, were used in a flow-through MR configuration. The catalytic tests were carried out at $200^{\circ}C$ and at different pressures with a simulated dry reformate shifted gas mixture ($H_2$ ca. 60%, CO 1 %, plus $O_2,\;N_2,\;CO_2$). The operative $O_2/CO$ stoichiometric equivalent feed ratio was ${\lambda}= 2$. These catalytic tests, reducing the CO concentration down to $10{\sim}50$ ppm, verified the possibility of MR integration after using a low temperature water-gas shift unit of a fuel processor to convert hydrocarbons into hydrogen-rich gas.
This study investigated the long-term durability of catalyst(Pd or Fe)-infiltrated solid oxide cells for $CO_2$/steam co-electrolysis. Fuel-electrode supported solid oxide cells with dimensions of $5{\times}5cm^2$ were fabricated, and palladium or iron was subsequently introduced via wet infiltration (as a form of PdO or FeO solution). The metallic catalysts were employed in the fuel-electrode to promote $CO_2$ reduction via reverse water gas shift reactions. The metal-precursor particles were well-dispersed on the fuel-electrode substrate, which formed a bimetallic alloy with Ni embedded on the substrate during high-temperature reduction processes. These planar cells were tested using a mixture of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ to measure the electrochemical and gas-production stabilities during 350 h of co-electrolysis operations. The results confirmed that compared to the Fe-infiltrated cell, the Pd-infiltrated cell had higher stabilities for both electrochemical reactions and gas-production given its resistance to carbon deposition.

The steam reformer for hydrogen production from methane is studied by a numerical method. Langmuir- Hinshelwood model is incorporated for catalytic surface reactions, and the pseudo-homogeneous model is used to take into account local equilibrium phenomena between a catalyst and bulk gas. Dominant chemical reactions are Steam Reforming (SR) reaction, Water-Gas Shift (WGS) reaction, and Direct Steam Reforming (DSR) reaction. The numerical results are validated with experimental results at the same operating conditions. Using the validated code, parametric study has been numerically performed in view of the steam reformer performance. As increasing a wall temperature, the fuel conversion increases due to the high heat transfer rate. When Steam to Carbon Ratio (SCR) increases, the concentration of carbon monoxide decreases since WGS reaction becomes more active. When increasing Gas Hourly Space Velocity (GHSV), the fuel conversion decreases due to the heat transfer limitation and the low residence time. The reactor shape effects are also investigated. The length and radius of cylindrical reactors are changed at the same catalyst volume. The longer steam reformer is, the better steam reformer performs. However, system energy efficiency decreases due to the large pressure drop.

As a basic research of developing two-interconnected fluidized beds system for selective solid circulation, a solid separator was developed to separate fine and coarse particles by means of particle size difference with particle size separation system equipped with metal screen. The effects of gas velocity, height of solid separator, and separation area on the solid separation rate were investigated as well. The solid separation rate increased as the gas velocity, height of solid separator, and separation area increased. As the gas velocity and height of the solid separator increased, the variation of the solid separation rate was consistent with that of bubble size. Consequently, coarse($212{\sim}300{\mu}m$) and fine($63{\sim}106{\mu}m$) particles were separated using the solid separator and the solid separation rate was ranged from 4.4 to 127 g/min. We also proposed two interconnenced fluidized beds system for sorption enhanced water-gas shift process equipped with the developed solid separator.

Gasification characteristics and gas produced from a sewage sludge char were analyzed by using a thermobalance reactor, which is used for a reaction kinetic analysis by measuring weight change of materials at a desired temperature. Gasification reaction rate increased with increasing temperature and steam partial pressure due to the promotion of gasification reaction. Three models of gas-solid reaction were applied to the reaction kinetics analysis and modified volumetric reaction model was an appropriated model for the steam gasification of the sewage sludge char. Apparent activation energy and pre-exponential factors were evaluated as 155.5 kJ/mol and $14,087s^{-1}atm^{-1}$, respectively. The order of reaction on steam partial pressure was 0.68. Gas analysis was performed at $900^{\circ}C$ and hydrogen concentration was highest in the gas concentrations, which increased with increasing the steam partial pressure. Hydrogen concentration increased the most and hydrogen concentration in the produced gas was 2-4 times higher than that of carbon monoxide due to the gasification and water gas shift reaction.
