PPL effect was investigated in terms of brand recall, brand attitude, and purchase intention. The data were collected using a self-administered and structured questionnaire. Respondents were consisted of 270 middle school girls and 260 high school girls in Pusan. Cronbach's alpha, T-Test, frequency, and ANOVA test were used to conduct the data analysis on 524 out of 530 questionnaires. The result showed no difference in PPL effect between middle school students and high school students. Students shopping with friends or relatives showed higher brand attitude or purchase intention than ones shopping alone. The students watching 1-2 hours showed significantly higher brand recall, cognitive brand attitude, emotional brand attitude and purchase intention than other students watching TV drama longer. • The conveyance of health information through mass media is becoming more popular, even through recreation at television programs. This study aims to investigate the influence of health related TV programs for recreation on a practice action of health behavior. In particular, the relationship between attitude, belief, and behavioral practice of the TV audience is explored. Data was collected from 200 respondents for two weeks in May, 2002. The results showed that the motive of the TV audience for watching TV recreation programs was either entertainment or fun. They satisfied with the programs in general. However, the rate of desirable health behavior practice after watching those programs was low. The degree of practice was significantly correlated with belief, satisfaction, and application possibility of the TV audience to the program. In addition, two personal factors such as gender and subjective evaluation of personal health status were significant in influencing health behavior. The appearance of experts on programs was the most important factor influencing the belief of an audience. This implies that audiences want to have the health information fulfilling scientific evidences. It is suggested that TV recreation programs would be beneficial to most audience members for in receiving important health information, only if recreation and interest factors in the program as well as the evidence-based health information and knowledge are successfully combined.

  • Viewers have always switched channels and they have selected by turning away from the TV and returning to the set when the content seemed more amusing. Also, people usually watch television with their family members and thus the experience of viewing is embedded uniquely in ongoing processes of family interaction. In other words, people develop patterns and habits through the act of viewing together. As viewing with family members is the most frequent mode of media exposure, the context of family viewing needs to be thoroughly examined if we are to understand the family's use of television. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamic nature of television viewing behavior. With the people meter's second-by-second viewing information, first we analyze who, when, and why viewers change channels. The ensuing reduction of advertising impact due to zapping will be investigated as well. Then the focus will be shifted to the dynamic interaction of coviewing among family members. In order to further explore the in-depth nature of television viewing, actual viewing information should be cross-analyzed with respect to both demographic and psychographic variables. In this study we surveyed individual characteristics such as television watching patterns, program type preference, attitude toward commercials, channel control intensity, and personalities. We have demonstrated that the results of an meticulus analysis of survey data provide valuable insights into the dynamics of television viewing among family members.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: As watching food-related programs has become very popular among the young generation in Korea, this study sought to compare the Mukbang- and Cookbang-watching status of university students with their dietary life. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The participants were 380 students who were not majoring in food and nutrition at a university in Gyeonggi, Korea. Based on self- reports, the participants were grouped according to their frequency of watching Mukbang or Cookbang: frequent-watching (FW) 21.1% and 5.3%, respectively; moderate-watching (MW) 43.9% and 27.9%, respectively; and not-watching (NW) 35.0% and 66.8% respectively. RESULTS: In the FW group, up to 88.8% and 70.0% of participants reported watching Mukbang and Cookbang, respectively, ≥ 3 days/week. Almost all participants in the FW and MW groups reported intention to keep watching these shows. The most frequent watching route was "YouTube" and the most important criterion to select a program was "food". In the case of Mukbang, but not Cookbang, the participants in the FW group scored their diet significantly worse than those in the NW group (P < 0.05). A greater proportion of participants felt that watching Cookbang improved their diets rather than worsened them (14.3% vs. 0.8%, respectively), while more participants said that watching Mukbang worsened their diets rather than improved them (8.1% vs. 2.4%, respectively). In both cases, greater differences were shown in the FW groups compared to the MW groups (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01 for Cookbang and Mukbang, respectively). Moreover, the participants answered that Mukbang-watching prompted them to eat more of less desirable food, such as through eating out and purchasing convenient and delivered foods, whereas Cookbang-watching made them want to cook more of their own food. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that Korean university students who frequently watch Mukbang, but not Cookbang, may be a nutritionally vulnerable group that needs attention.

  • Purpose: sexual permissiveness, sexual behaviors and the consumption of mass media in female high school students. Methods: 306 students, from three different girls' high schools in Seoul, who understood the purpose of the study, participated as subjects in the research. The research tools were the mass-media consumption scale, the sexual attitudes survey, the sexual permissiveness survey, and the sexual behaviors scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA with SPSS/WIN. 18.0 program. Results: The subjects' daily mass media consumption was 143.7 minutes of TV watching on weekdays, while 253.9 minutes on weekends, 88.5 minutes of Internet surfing, 57.8 minutes of listening to pop music. Watching TV music programs was 68.3 minutes a week. Watching TV 'alone' was 30.7% and Internet surfing in one's 'own room' was the highest at 39.9%. The average score of sexual attitudes, sexual permissiveness, and sexual behaviors was 25.7/55, 35.4/64 and 0.7/10, respectively. Sexual attitudes and sexual permissiveness varied according to how much time they spent surfing the Internet, with whom they watched TV, and how much time they spent listening to popular music; and sexual behavior differed according to the time spent on the Internet. Conclusion: Educational programs need to be developed to help young people control their media consumption behaviors. In addition, political attention and a proper system are needed to promote a healthier and sounder pop culture through a public review system.

  • With the advent of the digital broadcasting, the audiences can access a large number of TV programs and their information through the multiple channels on various media devices. The access to a large number of TV programs can support a user for many chances with which he/she can sort and select the best one of them. However, the information overload on the user inevitably requires much effort with a lot of patience for finding his/her favorite programs. Therefore, it is useful to provide the persona1ized broadcasting service which assists the user to automatically find his/her favorite programs. As the growing requirements of the TV personalization, we introduce our automatic user preference learning algorithm which 1) analyzes a user's usage history on TV program contents: 2) extracts the user's watching pattern depending on a specific time and day and shows our automatic TV program recommendation system using MPEG-7 MDS (Multimedia Description Scheme: ISO/IEC 15938-5) and 3) automatically calculates the user's preference. For our experimental results, we have used TV audiences' watching history with the ages, genders and viewing times obtained from AC Nielson Korea. From our experimental results, we observed that our proposed algorithm of the automatic user preference learning algorithm based on the Bayesian network can effectively learn the user's preferences accordingly during the course of TV watching periods.
