Phosphogypsum is a by-product resulting from the phosphoric acid process for manufacturing fertilizers. It consists mainly of $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ and contains some impurities such as $P_2O_5$, $F^-$, and organic substances. Recycling research of phosphogypsum is very limited to a field of study, especially, civil engineering. This study describes an application of phosphogypsum as dredged materials. For this purpose, experiments are performed to evaluate the physicochemical properties and environmental characteristics of dredged clay with phosphogypsum ; sedimentation test, pH, and leaching test. The result of this study are as follows : the settling velocity is increased due to the activity of phosphogypsum. And leaching and radioactive test results are far below than those of regulatory requirement of Waste Management Act in Korea. Therefore phosphogypsum can be used as dredged materials in reclamation.
Medium grade mongranular compound fertilizers for the crops under vinyl mulching cultivation were formulated using the principal materials of urea, DAP and MOP in combination with various fillers of zeolite, gypsum and treated human waste and granulated with waste liquid of glutamic acid fermentation as binder. The ratios of $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ of trial products were 12-10-11.5 for red pepper, 8-8-6 for sesame and 4-9-14 for peanut. The rate of dissolution of trial products was comparatively low in water. The product for red pepper had N dissolution rate of 80 percent during 24 hrs. 70 for peanut and 55 for seasame. The optimum dissolution rate has reported to be 50 percent by the standard laboratory dissolution test for 24 hrs. in water. Therefore, the slowly released characteristics were obtained with the products that had 24 hrs. dissolution of 70 to 60 percent. One time basal application of trial products could readily be justified under muching cultivation.

Urbanization rates of population range from about 1% in the developed countries to about 4% in developing countries. For a global population that may reach 10 billion within the next 40 years, pressure has arisen for an increase in the large-scale use of wastes and byproducts in construction. Ironically, most of the wastes that need to be recycled are generated in large cities where the need for constructed facilities to serve large population is high. Waste and recycled materials (WRM) that are used in construction are required to satisfy material strength, durability and contaminant teachability requirements. These materials exhibit a wide variety of characteristics owing to the diversity of industrial processes through which they are produced. Several laboratory-based investigations have been conducted to assess the pollution potential and load bearing capacity of materials such as petroleum-contaminated soils, coal combustion ash, flue-gas desulphurization gypsum and foundry sand. For full-scale systems, although environmental pollution potential and structural integrity of constructed facilities that incorporate WRM are interrelated, comprehensive schemes have not been developed for integrated assessment of the relevant field-scale performance factors. In this presentation, a framework for such an assessment is proposed and presented in the form of a flowchart. The proposed scheme enables economic, environmental, worker safety and engineering factors to be addressed in a number of sequential steps. Quantitative methods and test protocols that have been developed can be incorporated into the proposed scheme for assessing the feasibility of using WRM as partial or full substitutes for earthen highway materials in the field.

The use of the coal ash for surcharge material, in a view of the environmental aspect, can decrease amount of the reclamation through recycling waste materials as well as prevent a destruction of the ecosystem attributed to sand picking. In addition, it can reduce both unit cost of material and construction expenses. In this study, new construction material as alternative surcharge material using coal ash, which is by-product from thermoelectric power plant, were developed. Mixing ratios of fly ash and bottom ash derived from the coal ash in Samchunpo thermoelectric power plants were determined. Furthermore, mixing conditions depending on the ratios of the cement and gypsum used for chemical additive were determined too. Uniaxial compression strength tests were conducted at different mixing conditions and Design graph of optimum mixing ratio at each required strength for economic efficiency is indicated in this paper.
This study investigated the engineering characteristics of non-sintering binder-stabilized mixtures consisting of different ratios of a hardening agent(3%, 6%, 9%, 12%) for recycling industrial by-products through several series of laboratory tests. The hardening agents consisted of two kinds of non-sintering binders(NSB-1, NSB-2), which were developed by using inter-chemical reactions among blast furnace slag, phospho-gypsum, and an alkali activator. In addition, ordinary Portland cement(OPC) was used to compare the engineering characteristics of the stabilized mixture. An unconfined compressive test showed that the unconfined compressive strength increased with the curing time and mixing ratio. Experimental test results indicated that the 7-day strength of the NSB-1 mixture was similar to that of the OPC mixture. However, its 28-day strength was higher than that of the OPC mixture. The secant module of elasticity showed a range of $E_{50}=(42-109)q_u$ regardless of the agents. Based on the results of triaxial tests, the cohesion and friction angle increased with the mixing ratio.

Eco-friendly material applied to building would be one of the materials which is must developed for global environmental conservation and reduction of carbon dioxide. For development of eco-friendly material, a cellulose absorber has been developed with waste paper through adjustment of various mix proportions. The developed cellulose absorber has been tested for its acoustic properties such as absorption coefficient and dynamic stiffness. The absorption coefficient was evaluated by developing six samples and using impedance tube and reverberation chamber. As a result of the evaluation, 0.64(NRC) was secured in absorption coefficient and 4.7 $MN/m^3$ was indicated in dynamic stiffness. Also, for practical use of developed absorbers as inner heartwood in drywall, comparison test of sound reduction index was performed with existing glass wool absorbers and constructed drywall of gypsum board. The results have shown 55 dB(Rw) of sound reduction index in glass-wool wall and 46 dB(Rw) in cellulose.
Flue gas desulfurization(FGD) is the technique to remove $SO_2$ gas from stack gases of coal-fired plants. Many researcher have studied to replace the desulfurizing agent because FGD systems use a lot of limestone and energy. In this study, we use the limestone sludge which is a by-product of steel industry in order to replace desulfurizing agent of FGD system by control the particle size of limestone sludge. And desulfurization performance test is implemented by investigating $SO_2$ gas removal properties upon the characteristic of the limestone sludge with various particle size.

The International Energy Agency(IEA) recommends that intergovernmental agreements reduce CO2 emissions by 2050 to about 50% in 2005 in its report. To realize these demands, it is suggested to actively utilize energy efficiency improvement technology, renewable energy, nuclear power, carbon dioxide capture & storage technology (CCS). In the field of building materials and cement, mineral carbonization technology is widely used. Inorganic by-products applicable to greenhouse gas storage include waste concrete, slag, coal ash, and gypsum. If the Mineral Carbonation Act is used, it is expected that about 12 million tons of greenhouse gases can be immobilized every year. Greenhouse gas immobilization using cement hydrate can be immobilized by injecting carbon dioxide into the hydrated products C-S-H, and Ca(OH)2. In the case of immobilization through concrete carbonization, a carbon dioxide promotion test is used, which is often different from the actual carbon dioxide carbonization reaction. If the external carbon dioxide concentration is abnormally higher than the reality, it is thought that it will be different from the actual reaction. In this study, the carbonation phenomenon according to the concentration and identification of the carbon dioxide reaction mechanism of cement hydrate was to be considered.

Securing the radiological safety is a prerequisite for the safe management of the naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) which cannot be reused. This becomes a crucial focus of our R&D efforts upon the implementation of the Act on Protective Action Guidelines against Radiation in the Natural Environment. To secure the safety, the establishment of technical bases and procedures for securing radiological safety related to the disposal of NORM is required. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics, to collect the data, to have the radiological safety assessment methodologies and tools, to investigate disposal methods and facilities, and to study the effects of the input data on the safety for the NORM wastes. Here, we assess the environmental impact of the NORM waste disposal with respect to the major domestic and foreign NORM characteristics. The data associated with major industries are collected/analyzed and the status of disposal facilities and methodologies relevant to the NORM wastes is investigated. We also suggest the conceptual design concept of a landfill disposal facility and the management plan with respect to the major NORM wastes characteristics. The radionuclide pathways are identified for the atmospheric transport and leachate release and the environmental impact assessment methodology for the NORM waste disposal is established using a relevant code. The assessment and analysis on the exposure doses and excessive cancer risks for the NORM waste disposal are performed using the characteristics of the representative domestic NORM wastes including flying ash, phosphor gypsum, and redmud. The results show that the exposure dose and the excessive cancer risks are very low to consider any radiation effects. This study will contribute to development in the areas of the regulatory technology for securing radiological safety relevant to NORM waste disposal and to the implementation technology for the Act.

Recycled fine aggregate has low quality because it contains large amount of old mortar. So, its usage is limited to a lower value-add, such as the roadbed material etc. Also, alkaline water occurred from treatment process of the waste concrete is becoming the cause of environmental problem. Accordingly, this study is to develop on the high quality recycled fine aggregate produced by low speed wet abraser using sulphuric. We investigated the properties of compressive strength of the mortar which was manufactured using recycled fine aggregate containing calcined gypsum produced by earlier mentioned process. Test results indicate that concrete using recycled fine aggregate containing calcined gypsum is higher compressive strength than concrete using other sands.
