A Study on Waste Factors and Improvement Priorities of Missile Flight Test Works (유도무기 비행시험 업무 개선을 위한 낭비요인과 우선순위 분석 연구)

  • The works of preparing for missile flight test are becoming more complicated. To reduce the amount of waste time along with the complexity of the task, systematic analysis of waste factors should be performed before performing process improvement. The waste factors for missile flight test are first defined using lean-based waste factors. The improvement priorities for the defined waste factors are surveyed. For reliable analysis, AHP is used in questionnaire analysis instead of the existing method with large error. Then weighting and priority for waste factors for level 1 and Level 2 are suggested. Through AHP, we could derive reliable improvement priorities for waste factors. It is analyzed that the biggest cause of waste factors is waiting time and identified as the first item to be considered when establishing improvement plan. In addition, suggestions for improvement measures of waste factors are presented through brainstorming method. Reliable results will be an important factor in process redesign for missile flight test works.

A Study on the Waste Incinerator Location Problem in Seoul (서울시 쓰레기 소각장 입지에 관한 연구)

  • Waste disposal problem is one of the most important social welfare indicators in urban area, because the volume of waste generated from urban area is remarkable. So far most waste of Seoul has been disposed at landfills. However, this landifill disposal method is confronted with several difficulties in recent. As public concern on environmental problem increases and autonomy system is settled down, local community people of the landfills refuse to receive the waste produced other places any more. It brought reginal confliction problem between waste sending and receiving by refusing to accept waste from certain region. Furthermore, it is difficult to find another place to fill up the waste, while the existing landfiis is reached at the limit in the near future. In terms of environmental aspects landfill method is not the best way to dispose waste. It contaminates the soil and ground/underground water by leaking water containing many serious pollutants as well as offensive oder. In terms of equity, this waste disposal method is not fair. Environmental pollution causes damage to residence near to the landfills, while the waste produced other places. In order to satisfy the equity aspect, the waste generated a region should be disposed within the region. Incineration of Waste has been provided as the alternative. Government plans to construct waste incinerator in every anatomy, so the waste produced by local community is disposed within their local autonomous area. However, the location decision is not easy, since waste incinerator is one of the facilities to the community people. We can not apply the existing location models for this problem, because they show strong NIMBY phenomenon for the location. The location of waste incinerator should be determined very carefully with consideration of various location factors and criteria. This study proposes a methodology for determining the location of the waste incinerators by utilizing GIS, which is a power research tool for location decision where various geographical factors related. We drive the location factors which should be considered in the determination of waste incinerators. They involve environmental, socio-economic, and institutional factors. In first, we eliminate the area which is located within the environmental location criteria such as slope, fault line, distance to river, and then eliminate ares which is conflict with the social and institutional criteria.

Sensitivity Analysis for Factor of the On-link Public Assessment Model in Radioactive Waste Overland Transportation

  • The increase in radioactive waste increased the demand for transportation to the disposal facility. Prior to transporting radioactive waste, confirming that the potential exposure is insignificant is crucial. Overland transportation risk assessment models were developed tailored to domestic characteristics. Dose assessment using this model requires selecting appropriate factors. However, users may struggle to derive appropriate values, leading to inaccuracies. Additionally, if assessment results show outliers, prioritizing factors for review can be challenging. Therefore, sensitivity analysis is necessary to prioritize factors for accurate assessment. In this study, sensitivity analysis was conducted on the on-link public risk assessment model factors for radioactive waste overland transportation. Initially, assessment models were analyzed by each detailed exposure scenario. Subsequently, uncertainty propagation-based sensitivity analysis methodology was applied. The default values for the assessment model factors were set, and sensitivity analysis was conducted based on road type for maximum individual and collective dose assessment models. For the maximum individual dose model, the distance to the same-direction vehicle was the most sensitive, whereas for the collective dose model, vehicle velocity was the most sensitive. The results of this study can be used as the basic data on radioactive waste transportation risk assessment in Korea in the future.

A Study on the Possibility of Plant Introduction Using Soil Neutralization in the Abandoned Mine Waste Areas (광산폐석지에 토양 중화를 이용한 식물도입 가능성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the soil on two waste areas that lack plants to find out the limiting factors of plant introduction, and to find out the possibility of plant introduction through plant growth experiments by mixing the two waste soil. In the case of tungsten waste soil, insufficient organic matter, water content, effective phosphoric acid, and nitrogen content were the limiting factors for plant introduction, and in the case of coal waste soil, low pH of the soil acted as the limiting factors for natural introduction. Growth experiments showed that the number of leaves of Ipomoea nil grown in soil mixed with both waste soil was 2.7 times greater than that of Ipomoea nil grown in tungsten waste soil, and 2.29 times greater than that of Ipomoea nil grown in coal waste soil. The fresh weight comparison showed that Ipomoea nil grown in soil mixed with the two waste soil had a fresh weight of 2.64 times higher than that of tungsten waste soil and 2.45 times higher than that of coal waste soil. There was no significant difference in the fresh weight of Ipomoea nil grown in soil mixed with the two waste soil and in general soil. Therefore, when the two waste soil are mixed, it can be judged that the components unfavorable to growth complement each other, improving the soil and being effective in plant growth.

Elementary School Students' Perception of Food Waste and Factors Affecting Plate Waste Rate of School Foodservice in the Gyeongnam Area (학교급식 음식물쓰레기에 대한 인식 및 잔반율 영향 요인 분석 - 경남지역 초등학교를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary school students' perception of food waste as well as to identify factors affecting the plate waste rate of school foodservice in the Gyeongnam area. Questionnaires were distributed to 280 students from June 20 to July 5, 2011 and a total of 279 were analyzed. The results of this study were as follows. First, the main reason of plate waste was 'big portion size', which suggests that portion size should be adjusted. Second, the attitude for food waste reduction was 3.67 based on a 5-point Likert scale (1: strongly disagree, 5: strongly agree). Third, the average plate waste rate of school foodservice was 18.65%. Fourth, there were four factors affecting plate waste rate; balanced/unbalanced diet, satisfaction of school foodservice, need for nutrition education related to food waste, and attitude towards food waste reduction. The plate waste rates of the students who ate a balanced diet were significantly lower than those of the students who ate an unbalanced diet (P<0.001). The plate waste rates of the students who were satisfied with school foodservice were significantly lower than those of the students who were unsatisfied (P<0.001). The plate waste rates of the students who recognized the need for nutrition education were significantly lower that those of the students who did not recognize this (P<0.01). Finally, the students' attitudes towards food waste reduction were significantly negatively correlated with plate waste rate (P<0.01). In conclusion, in order to successfully reduce plate waste in school foodservice, nutrition education should be provided on proper portion size, balanced diet, and food waste. Further, introduction of partial self-service by school foodservice should be reviewed, and strategies for the improvement of school foodservice satisfaction should be applied.

Influencing Factors on the Practice of Medical Waste Management of Nurses in Tertiary General Hospitals after COVID-19 (코로나 19 이후 상급종합병원 간호사의 의료폐기물 관리 실천에 미치는 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the practice of medical waste management of nurses in tertiary general hospitals after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: The participants were 154 nurses working in two tertiary general hospitals. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using an Independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS/WIN 27.0 program. Results: Factors significantly influencing the subject's practice of medical waste management include medical waste education(β=.18, p=.013), recognition of infection control organizational culture (β=.26, p=.007), and attitudes toward medical waste management (β=.23, p=.011). The explanatory power of these variables for medical waste management practice was 29.0% (F=7.34, p<.001). Conclusion: To improve the practice of medical waste management, a strategy to provide positive attitudes toward medical waste management should be needed when developing medical waste management training programs, and various measures are necessary to make the organizational culture positive for the implementation of infection control guidelines at the organizational level.

Household Food Waste Practices and Factors Affecting Food Waste Reduction Intentions of Food Purchasers: Data from the 2022 Consumer Behavior Survey for Food (가정에서 음식물쓰레기 발생 실태와 음식물쓰레기 감량 노력에 영향을 미치는 요인: 식품소비행태조사(2022) 자료 활용)

  • The objectives of the study were to examine food waste generation and reduction efforts at home, and to identify factors affecting the intention to reduce food waste. A total of 3,321 food buyer responses were used from the 2022 Consumer Behavior Survey for Food of the Korea Rural Economic Institute. Statistical methods for a complex sample were applied by using a SPSS program (ver. 26.0). The average daily food waste generation per household significantly differed by the main food purchaser's age and household size. Plate waste and food waste from preparation were the main types of food waste. A multiple regression analysis revealed that intention to reduce food waste was influenced by the main types of food waste, the average daily amount of food waste, the perceived amount of food waste, and the perceived importance of food waste reduction after adjusting for the age of the main food purchaser and household size. Since the amount of food waste was affected by a series of food behaviors as well as consumer's intention to reduce waste, empirical research on the types and amounts of food waste generated in Korean households and qualitative research on behaviors and attitude affecting food waste are needed.

Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Medical Waste Management in Medium-sized Hospital among Health Care Workers

  • This study was on the knowledge, attitude, and practice of medical waste management in medium-sized hospitals located in D Metropolitan City in Korea. This work was intended to be used as basic data for improving the level of medical waste management. The questionnaire data were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé's test, and multiple regression methods. The Factors influencing the knowledge of medical waste management were that males had a lower knowledge level of medical waste than females (β=-0.272, P<0.01), and it was found that the more adequate medical waste containers were provided, the higher the knowledge level of medical waste management (β=0.180, P<0.05). The factors affecting the attitude were not significant, and the factors affecting the practice showed that the higher the attitude score, the higher the level of practice (β=0.465, P<0.001). It was shown that gender and sufficient provision of medical waste containers had an effect on the knowledge of medical waste management, and the attitude toward medical waste management was identified as a factor influencing the practice. Individual education and training according to the characteristics of medical workers, and periodic guidance and inspection of medical waste managers will be required to increase the attitude of medical workers toward medical waste management. We need to construct a management process that thoroughly separates medical waste from the beginning of the medical waste generation, leading to the establishment of a positive attitude toward medical waste management.

Development of a Scaling Factor Prediction Method for Radioactive Composition in Low-level Radioactive Waste

  • This study presents a method to predict plant-specific and operational history dependent scaling factors. Realistic and detailed approaches are taken to find scaling factors at reactor coolant. This approach begins with fission product release mechanisms and fundamental release properties of fuel-source nuclide such as fission product and transuranic nuclide. Scaling factors at various waste streams are derived from the predicted reactor coolant scaling factors with the use of radionuclide retention and build up model. This model makes use of radioactive material balance within the radioactive waste processing systems. According to input parameters of plant operation history, scaling factors predicted at reactor coolant and waste streams are well brought out the effects of plant operation history.

Factors affecting practice of infectious wastes management of dental professionals (치과 종사자의 감염성 폐기물관리 실천에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between oral health professionals' knowledge, attitude, and practice with regard to infectious waste management and to identify related factors influencing it. Methods: The study comprised of 219 oral health professionals from select dental clinics and public health centers recruited between August 25, 2016 and September 5, 2016, who agreed to participate in the study with full understanding of the study objectives. A self-reported questionnaire was administered, which consisted of 22 items on knowledge of infectious waste management, 9 items on attitude, and 16 items on practice. Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analyses. Results: The age, knowledge, and clinical attitude of oral health professionals significantly correlated with waste management practice. Specifically, infectious waste management practice improved with increasing age, a greater level of knowledge, and a more positive clinical attitude. Additionally, the standardized regression coefficient demonstrated that, of these three factors, clinical attitude more strongly correlated with effective waste management practice, followed by age and level of knowledge. Conclusions: These results indicated that oral health professionals had a low level of knowledge regarding infectious waste management, and a more positive clinical attitude resulted in better practices. Therefore, the development of detailed and active education guidelines and strategies are needed to enhance the attitude, knowledge, and practice of oral health professionals with regard to infectious waste management.
