  • In a numerical simulation of open channel turbulent flows, the determination of wall roughness height for wall function was studied. The roughness constant, based on the law-of-the -wall for flow on rough walls, obtained by experimental works for pipe flows is employed in general wall functions. However, this constant of wall function is the function of Froude number in open channel flows. Thus, the wall roughness should be determined by taking into account the effect of Froude number. In addition, the wall roughness should be corresponding to Manning's roughness coefficient widely used for open channels. In this study, the relation between wall roughness height as an input condition and Manning's roughness coefficient was investigated, and an equation for effective wall roughness height considering the characteristics of numerical models was proposed as a function of Manning's roughness coefficient.

  • 개수로의 난류흐름을 VOF(Volume of Fluid)기법을 채용한 RANS(Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) 방정식 모형을 사용하여 수치모의할 때 벽면함수의 거칠기를 산정하기 위해 고려해야 하는 점들을 연구하였다.

  • The flow characteristics of a two-dimensional offset jet issuing parallel to a rough wall is experimentally investigated by using a split film probe with the modified Stock's calibration method. The mean velocity and turbulent stresses profiles in the up and down-stream locations of the wall-attachment regions are measured and compared with those of the smooth wall attaching offset jet cases. It is found that the wall-attachment region on the rough wall is wider than on the smooth wall for the same offset height and the jet speed. The position of the maximum velocity point is farther away from the wall than that for the smooth wall case because of the thick wall boundary layer established by the surface roughness. It is concluded that the roughness of the wall accelerates the relaxation process to a redeveloped plane wall jet and produces a quite different turbulent diffusion behavior especially near the wall from comparing with the smooth plane wall jet turbulence.

  • The fully developed tubulent momentum and heat transfer induced by the square- ribbed roughness elements on both the inner and outer wall surfaces in the concentric annuli are studied analytically based on a modified turbulence model. Heat transfer coefficients for two conditions, i.e, a) inner wall heated as constant heat flux and outer wall insulated b) inner wall insulated and outer wall heated as constant heat flux, are investigated. The analytical results of the fluid flow are verified by experiment. The experiment is done with a pitot tube and a X-type hot wire anemometer to measure the time mean velocity profiles, zero shear stress positions, maximum velocity profiles and friction factors, and etc. The resulting momentum and heat transfer are discussed in terms of various parameters, such as the radius ratio, the relative roughness, the roughness density, Nusselt number and Prandtl number.

  • The effects of surface roughness on a spatially-developing turbulent boundary layer (TBL) were investigated by performing direct numerical simulations of TBLs over rough and smooth walls. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness was varied in the range $Re_{\theta}=300{\sim}1400$. The roughness elements used were periodically arranged two-dimensional spanwise rods, and the roughness height was $k=1.5{\theta}_{in}$, which corresponds to $k/{\delta}=0.045{\sim}0.125$. To avoid generating a rough wall inflow, which is prohibitively difficult, a step change from smooth to rough was placed $80{\theta}_{in}$ downstream from the inlet. The spatially-developing characteristics of the rough-wall TBL were examined. Along the streamwise direction, the friction velocity approached a constant value and a self-preserving form of the turbulent stress was obtained. Introduction of the roughness elements affected the turbulent stress not only in the roughness sublayer but also in the outer layer. Despite the roughness-induced increase of the turbulent stress in the outer layer, the roughness had only a relatively small effect on the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor in the outer layer. Inspection of the triple products of the velocity fluctuations revealed that introducing the roughness elements onto the smooth wall had a marked effect on vertical turbulent transport across the whole TBL. By contrast, good surface similarity in the outer layer was obtained for the third-order moments of the velocity fluctuations.

  • The effects of surface roughness on a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) were investigated using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The roughness elements used were periodically arranged two-dimensional spanwise rods, and the roughness height was ${\kappa}/{\delta}$. Introduction of the roughness elements increased the wake strength and the turbulent stress not only in the roughness sublayer but also in the outer layer. This indicates the existence of interaction between inner and outer layers for 2D rod-roughened wall. Roughness effects on a turbulence structure near the wall were obtained by PIV measurements. Iso-contours of mean velocities and Reynolds stresses in the roughness sublayer showed a very good agreement with previous DNS results.

  • In this paper, turbulence models for considering roughness in the open source code(OpenFOAM) was investigated. Wall function in the RANS(Reynolds-averaged Navier - Stokes) turbulence model was modified considering roughness on the flat plate by using roughness function. Correlation between the first layer height in the CFD model and roughness height of the plate was observed, and the most proper roughness function, and the first layer height from the plate wall in the CFD analysis was suggested in this paper.

  • The effect of roughness is a change in the velocity and turbulence distributions near the surface. Turbulence models with surface roughness effect are applied to the fully developed flow in a two-dimensional, rough wall channel. Modified wall function model, low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model, and k-$\omega$ model are selected for comparison. In order to make a fair comparison, the calculation results are compared with the experimental data. The modified wall function model and the low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model require further refinement, while the k-$\omega$ model of Wilcox performs remarkably well over a wide range of roughness values.

  • The nanofluidics is characterized by a large surface-to-volume ratio, so that the surface properties strongly affect the flow resistance. We present here the results showing that the effect of wetting properties and the surface roughness may considerably reduce the friction of fluid past the boundaries. For a simple fluid flowing over hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, the influences of surface roughness are investigated by the nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations. The fluid slip at near a solid surface highly depends on the wall-fluid interaction. For hydrophobic surfaces, apparent fluid slips are observed on smooth and rough surfaces. The solid wall is modeled as a rough atomic sinusoidal wall. The effects on the boundary condition of the roughness characteristics are given by the period and amplitude of the sinusoidal wall. It was found that the slip velocity for wetting conditions at interface decreases with increasing effects of surface roughness. The results show the surface rougheness and wettability determines the slip or no-slip boundary conditions. The surface roughness geometry shows significant effects on the boundary conditions at the interface.

  • Turbulent coherent structures near rod-roughened wall are investigated by analyzing the database of direct numerical simulation of turbulent boundary layer. The surface roughness rods with the height $k/{\delta}=0.05$ are arranged periodically in $Re_{\delta}=9000$. The roughness sublayer is defined as two-point correlations are not independent of streamwise locations around roughness. The roughness sublayer based on the two-point spatial correlation is different from that given by one-point statistics. Quadrant analysis and probability-weighted Reynolds shear stress indicate that turbulent structures are not affected by surface roughness above the roughness sublayer defined by the spatial correlations. The conditionally-averaged flow fields associated with Reynolds shear stress producing Q2/Q4 events show that though turbulent vortices are affected in the roughness sublayer, these are very similar at different streamwise locations above the roughness sublayer. The Reynolds stress producing turbulent vortices in the log layer ($y/{\delta}=0.15$)have almost the same geometrical shape as those in the smooth wall-bounded turbulent flows. This suggests that the mechanism by which the Reynolds stress is produced in the log layer has not been significantly affected by the present surface roughness.
