Association between Regular Breakfast and Sleep-related Factors in Korean Adolescents (청소년의 규칙적 아침식사를 위한 수면 관련 요인 분석)

  • Purpose: Breakfast is the most important meal to provide energy for the day. Breakfast is especially important to give enough nutritional support to children and adolescents for their physical growth and sexual development. Sleep-related factors like average sleep duration and wake up time would mostly be associated with regular breakfast. This study aimed to investigate the effect of sleep on regular breakfast consumption in Korean adolescents. Methods: The study used the data from the 12th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS-XII) conducted in 2016 by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The data of 62,820 subjects (middle/high school students) were included in the final analysis. The study examined the factors related to regular breakfast, focusing on weekday average sleep duration and wake up time of middle school students and high school students, respectively. Results: Regular breakfast consumption was shown to have a statistically significant association with high economic status, nutritional education, weekday average sleep duration, wake up time, and subjective sleep satisfaction in the multivariate logistic regression. Regardless of the school level, regular breakfast consumption was significantly associated with early wake up time. As to the effect of weekday average sleep duration on regular breakfast consumption, it showed some different results depending on the school level. Conclusion: Regular breakfast consumption of Korean adolescents was related to weekday average sleep duration and wake up time. Having breakfast regularly was affected by both adequate weekday average sleep duration and early wake up time.

Comparative Analysis of Runway Ultimate Capacity using Wake Turbulence Re-Categorization (Wake Turbulence RECAT을 적용한 활주로 절대 수용량 비교 분석)

  • The wake turbulence at the wingtip of preceding aircraft may affect the normal operation of following aircraft. Aircraft are classified into four categories according to their maximum take-off weight, and horizontal separation is applied with this category matrix. The FAA and EUROCONTROL revealed that the magnitude and effect of preceding aircraft wake turbulence were smaller than the current distance separation minima suggest. This new information presents the opportunity for revising wake turbulence minima into seven categories (RECAT). This paper confirms the feasibility of implementing RECAT at major airports in South Korea using the draft of ICAO Doc. 10122. The paper also calculates the ultimate runway capacity of Incheon International Airport in South Korea using the Harris Model and comparatively analyzes the amount of runway capacity. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the implementation of RECAT could increase the ultimate runway capacity of Incheon International Airport. This paper's calculation methods and results can be used as primary data for implementing RECAT in other airports.

  • Wind-induced oscillations are known to cause damage to the conductors and related hardware through fatigue, clashing of the bundled conductors and bolt loosening. Wake-induced oscillations have been known since the advent of bundled conductors. they are caused by aerodynamically unstable forces acting on the leeward conductors in the wake of the windward conductors, In order to control it, spacer dampers are installed in transmission lines with bundled conductors. Spacer damper installation is very important, it can cause damage to the conductors and spaer damper itself. This paper suggests importance of spacer damper installation in bundled conductor systems.

Features of the flow over a finite length square prism on a wall at various incidence angles

  • Wake characteristics of the flow over a finite square prism at different incidence angles were experimentally investigated using an open-loop wind tunnel. A finite square prism with a width D = 15 mm and a height H = 7D was vertically mounted on a horizontal flat plate. The Reynolds number was varied from $6.5{\times}10^3$ to $28.5{\times}10^3$ and the incidence angle ${\alpha}$ was changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$. The ratio of boundary layer thickness to the prism height was about ${\delta}/H=7%$. The time-averaged velocity, turbulence intensity and the vortex shedding frequency were obtained through a single-component hotwire probe. Power spectrum of the streamwise velocity fluctuations revealed that the tip and base vortices shed at the same frequency as that ofspanwise vortices. Furthermore, the results showed that the critical incidence angle corresponding to the maximum Strouhal number and minimum wake width occurs at ${\alpha}_{cr}=15^{\circ}$ which is equal to that reported for an infinite prism. There is a reduction in the size of the wake region along the height of the prism when moving away from the ground plane towards the free end.

  • Flow mechanism around air flow sensor of electronic control engine, especially Karman vortex type, was investigated experimentally. The two-dimensional flow characteristics in the intermediate wake region behind a triangular vortex-generator respectively apex forward facing, apex backward facing and vertical flat plates following after apex forward facing(i.e vortex-flowmeter) were investigated at Reynolods number of $ReH=1.4\times10^4$; H is the width of a triangular vortex-generator. The vortex shedding frequency for wide Reynolds number from $7\times10^3$ to $2.1\times10^4$ was also surveyed. The velocity component was measured by X-type hot wire anemometer at 8H downstream from the bluff body. The coherent structure of the intermediate wake behind a bluff body was obtained by conditional phase average technique. As a result, it was verified that the vertical flat plates following after apex forward triangular vortex-generator make not only more linear relation between free stream velocity and vortex shedding frequency but also more periodic vortex in the vicinity of the center of wake.

Monitoring and control of wind-induced vibrations of hanger ropes of a suspension bridge

  • In August 2012, during the passage of the typhoon Haikui (1211), large amplitude vibrations were observed on long hangers of the Xihoumen suspension Bridge, which destroyed a few viscoelastic dampers originally installed to connect a pair of hanger ropes transversely. The purpose of this study is to identify the cause of vibration and to develop countermeasures against vibration. Field measurements have been conducted in order to correlate the wind and vibration characteristics of hangers. Furthermore, a replica aeroelastic model of prototype hangers consisting of four parallel ropes was used to study the aeroelastic behavior of hanger ropes and to examine the effect of the rigid spacers on vibration mitigation. It is shown that the downstream hanger rope experiences the most violent elliptical vibration for certain wind direction, and the vibration is mainly attributed to wake interference of parallel hanger ropes. Based on wind tunnel tests and field validation, it is confirmed that four rigid spacers placed vertically at equal intervals are sufficient to suppress the wake-induced vibrations. Since the deployment of spacers on hangers, server hanger vibrations and clash of hanger ropes are never observed.

Propeller Skew Optimization Considering Varying Wake Field (선체반류를 고려한 프로펠러 최적 스큐화)

  • Propellers operating in a given nonuniform ship wake generate unsteady loads leading to undesirable stern vibration problems. The skew is known to be the most proper and effective geometric parameter to control or reduce the fluctuating forces on the shaft. This paper assumes the skew profile as either a quadratic or a cubic function of the radius and determines the coefficients of the polynomial function by applying the simplex method. The method uses the converted unconstrained algorithm to solve the constrained minimization problem of 6-component shaft excitation forces. The propeller excitation was computed either by applying the two-dimensional gust theory for quick estimation or by the fully three-dimensional unsteady lifting surface theory in time domain for an accurate solution. A sample result demonstrates that the shaft forces can be further reduced through optimization from the original design.

  • The aerodynamic forces and wake structures of the non-rotating downstream cylinder which is located behind the spinning upstream cylinder in tandem and staggered arrangement have been investigated by experimental method at Re= $1.32{\times}10^4$. The measurements of wake flow and pressure distributions of downstream cylinder are carried out in various spin parameters by combination of both longitudinal spacing rations L/d=1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and transverse spacing ratios T/d =0.0, -0.5, 0.5. For the present experiment, it has been found that the spin parameter of spinning upstream cylinder affect more easily the downstream cylinder in tandem arrangement than that in staggered arrangement.

Human Physiological Models of Insomnia (불면증의 생리학적 모델)

  • Relatively little is known about the neurobiology of insomnia, despite its wide prevalence and broad medical impact. Although much is still to be learned about the pathophysiology of the disorder, identification, systematic assessment, and appropriate treatment are clearly beneficial to patients. Recent research, using quantitative EEG, polysomnography (PSG), multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) and neuroimaging techniques, suggests that some broad areas can be identified as possible pathophysiological models. Sleep-wake homeostat model hypothesizes a failure in homeostatic regulation of sleep, an attenuated increase in sleep drive with time awake, and/or defective sensing of sleep need. Circadian clock model hypothesizes a dysfunctional circadian clock, resulting in changes in the timing of sleep-wake propensity that are incompatible with normal sleep. Intrinsic sleep-wake state mechanism model suggests that abnormal function of insomnia comprises the systems responsible for expression of the sleep states themselves. Extrinsic over-ride mechanism (stress-response) model suggests that insomnia reflects the consequences of overactivity of one of the systems considered "extrinsic" to normal sleep-wake control. Many current therapies for insomnia are based on these physiological models. Several attempts have been made to create a physiological model that would explain this disorder and could be used as a foundation for treatment. However, it appeared that no model can fully explain and clarify all aspects of insomnia. Future research should be necessary to expand our knowledge on the biological dimensions of insomnia.
