The objective of this study was to propose a rehabilitation protocol for distal radius fracture in Korean Medicine and to report its effectiveness. Three patients who had undergone distal radius fracture were treated using the rehabilitation protocol in Korean Medicine. We estimated the outcome evaluating physical examination findings of the wrist joint, numeric rating scale and quick the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score. After the treatment, we observed that wrist movement, numeric rating scale and quick DASH score were improved. A rehabilitation in Korean Medicine can be effectively used for distal radius fracture patients. The limitation of this study was the insufficient number of cases. Further studies are needed to design a rehabilitation protocol in Korean Medicine.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinetic factors of the golf driver swing using the Inverse Dynamics function. For this purpose, joint force were calculated. In order to test the possibility of Inverse Dynamics function(motion-dependent interaction), a triple segmental system was set for wrist, left shoulder and lumbar and joint force working on the anatomical joint region was estimated. For this study, 7 professional golfers were sampled, and then, their driver swings were recorded with two high-speed digital video cameras (180 frames/sec.) to be synthesized into 3-dimensional images and coordinated. Then, Eular's equation was used to produce some kinematic data, which were used to calculate joint force and torque with Newton's function. All data were calculated using LabVIEW 6.1 graphic program. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; It was found that the joint force was generated on wrist, shoulder and lumbar joints in the direction of the target, and that the joint force was stronger in the direction of target immediately before impact. The joint force was generated towards the target to activate the nodes, and then, it was generated in the reverse direction to increase the speed during impact.
High level, major limb amputation above the wrist and ankle joint has some characteristic problems because of the large muscle mass and poor potential for nerve regeneration. As an adjunct method to reduce warm ischemic time prior to bony stabilization, temporary vascular shunting by simple catheterization has been performed, which has not been associated with any significant complication and has improved on success rate in replantation surgery. The authors have experienced 198 cases replantation of amputated limbs and digits from September, 1983 at the Korea medical center, Guro hospital, of which, 13 cases of successful replantation of amputated limbs by avulsion injury above the wrist and ankle joint level, which is generally considered as contraindication, were followed up for average 4.5 years(minimum 1.5 to maximum 8.4 years) on terms of survival rate, function and appearance. The clinical analysis upon these cases is to be presented with review of references.
Objectives : To obtain pulse information, oriental medical doctors usually use the three finger pulse diagnosis method. Although the diagnostic positions are very important, the exact positions are not known because of the uncertain conversion of measures of length (bun, chon, chuk) and misunderstanding of the related concepts of oriental medicine. In this study, we proposed relative positions for the detection of three pulses with a pulse analyzer. Methods : The proposal was made based mainly on several literature reviews, especially the original texts, and the examination of anthropometric characteristics of 78 individuals. Results : The Kwan is the spot where the radial pulse can be felt well near the eminent head of the radius at wrist, high bone. The position of Chon should be apart from Kwan by 6/10 distance between the high bone and wrist joint of each individual. Finally, the position of Chuk is apart from Kwan by 6.5/100 distance between the high bone and the elbow joint of each individual. Conclusions : Adapting those proposed positions for measuring three pulses can provide more consistent information to what an oriental doctor obtains than a pulse analyzer applied to other positions.
This study is concerned with the functional utility of movement in sleeve from an ergonomic viewpoint. Experiments were carried out which include 43 upper extremity segments, 21 motions and 35 female subjects. The major conclusions of the study are. 1. The expansion rate of upper extremity was higher in length than in circumference mesurements. The amounts of expansion were, especially high (more than 60mm) for inner arm length, axillary arm circumference, and outer arm length. Therefore, a lot of ease is necessary for these parts. On the other hand, armhole circumference, forearm circumference, and wrist circumference had low rates of expansion. The sleeve cap length was also contracted in all motions. 2. The expansion rate and the range of expansion and contraction were higher in the upper arm than in the forearm. The main points of expansion were the axillary and elbow parts. The segment of maximum expansi (rate of 44.8%) was Iii of axillary parts. As the body surface expands mainly in some segments, it is desirable to allow ease to the main segments of expansion. 3. In a basic sleeve, necessary ease was lacking in the measurements for outer arm length and axillary arm circumference, while it was too large in armhole circumference, forearm circumference, wrist circumference, and sleeve cap length. Therefore, a basic sleeve is inadequate as a functional sleeve for hard work in point of functional utility of movement. Wider application of these findings would lead to an improvement in the comfort of workers.
Forearm fractures in children are very common among all pediatric fractures. However, biomechanical investigations on the pediatric forearm are rather scarce, partially due to the complex anatomy, closely situated, interrelated structures, highly dynamic movement patterns, and lack of appropriate tools. The purpose of this study is to develop a computational tool for child forearm investigation and characterize the mechanical responses of a backward fall using the computational model. A three-dimensional 10-year-old child forearm finite element (FE) model, which includes the ulna, radius, carpal bones, metacarpals, phalanges, cartilages and ligaments, was developed. The high-quality hexahedral FE meshes were created using a multi-block approach to ensure computational accuracy. The material properties of the FE model were obtained by scaling reported adult experimental data. The design of computational experiments was performed to investigate material sensitivity and the effects of relevant parameters in backward fall. Numerical results provided a spectrum of child forearm responses with various effective masses and forearm angles. In addition, a conceptual L-shape wrist guard design was simulated and found to be able to reduce child distal radius fracture.
Electromyographic (EMG) signals have been widely used as motion commands of prosthetic arms. Although EMG signals contain meaningful information including the movement intentions of human body, it is difficult to predict the subject's motion by analyzing EMG signals in real-time due to the difficulties in extracting motion information from the signals including a lot of noises inherently. In this paper, four Ag/AgCl electrodes are placed on the surface of the subject's major muscles which are in charge of four upper arm movements (wrist flexion, wrist extension, ulnar deviation, finger flexion) to measure EMG signals corresponding to the movements. The measured signals are sampled using DAQ module and clustered sequentially. The Fuzzy C-Means (FCMs) method calculates the center values of the clustered data group. The fuzzy system designed to detect the upper arm movement intention utilizing the center values as input signals shows about 90% success in classifying the movement intentions.
