In this research program special triaxial compression tests and dehydration-swelling tests under the condition of freeze-thaw process were conducted to show the effects of freezethaw process on the physical properties of weathered granite soil, and their results as follows; 1.Consolidation settlement of weathered granite soil mass was increased due to freeze-thaw process, and the initial tangent coefficient of dense state was higher than that of loose state. 2.Compression behaviour of soil was increased according to the decrease of freezing temperature, and when the freezing temperature was reached under - 10$^{\circ}$C, the compression rate was not influenced by change of freezing temperature. 3.The experiments showed that the void ratio and permeability of soil were converged into their values of shrinkage limit, and the permeability was higher due to the freeze-thaw process and as the lower the freezing temperature. 4.The decrease of liquid limit was indicated as the lower the freezing temperature, and as more the freeze4haw cycles, the moisture content was shown the lower side. 5.It was shown that the shrinkage was decreased by freeze-thaw process and not influenced by way of freezing temperature, but dehydration rate was higher.
In this paper, the retardation capacity of marine clay and weathered soil of seashore waste landfill is analyzed by using a laboratory column apparatus for organic and inorganic components which can represent the components of the leachate of municipal waste landfill. The results show that sorption capacity marine clay for potassium is larger than that of weathered soil. Lead and cadmium are adsorbed completely at concentrations higher than the real concentrations developed in the landfill. The bottom soils of seashore landfill can also retard some nondegradable components of organics although their sorption capacities for organics were less than those for inorganics.

To suggest a modified shallow foundation design method which can be considered the scale effect of foundation on IGM(intermediate geomaterial) soil layer, the weathered soil layer that is uniformly formed up to 8m(2B) with over 50 N-value is selected and 3 times field loading tests are performed on several sized square-shaped shallow foundations with 30, 75, 150, 240 and 400cm in width respectively. Because the soil modulus of elasticity(Es) calculated by soil investigation and 1st field test(PBT) results showed an underestimated tendency, a modified correlation is required for the reasonable estimation of Es on the weathered soil. Also, the N-value was increased with an increasing in depth. However, the N-values around the test foundations showed the different values even though the foundations on the same level because the test site was arranged by excavation. Therefore, the more detail soil investigations are required for the each test foundations respectively. Since Es based on elasticity theory is determined by the stress distribution shape of the foundation and elasticity modulus of the soil, the scale effect considered pressure-settlement curve can be clearly derived from the correlation on stress distribution shape and the variation of soil elasticity modulus with depth. Therefore, the modified correlation will be suggested to estimate a reasonable Es on the weathered soil, and the scale effect considered shallow foundation design method is also developed based on the elastic theory and field tests in this research.
This work reports an oven drying test performed on weathered granite soil from Yecheon, Korea, in order to find an effective method for measuring the weight of pure soil particles. After samples were oven dried, weights measured following desiccation using the method specified by the Korean Industrial Standard (KS F) were compared with weights measured without prior desiccation. Soil samples exposed to air for 45 min after oven drying absorbed moisture from the air and gradually increased in weight. When a desiccator was used, results measured 30 s after exposure to air indicated weight increases of 0.103-0.735% (depending on the particle size of the soil) relative to equivalent samples measured without desiccation. Using a desiccator after oven drying leads to overestimation of the pure soil weight. Therefore, measuring the weight of a soil sample immediately after oven drying without using a desiccator can reduce the error of weight measurement.
In current slope stability analysis techniques, slope stability is evaluated based on the saturated-soil theory. However, soil-water characteristics change frequently depending on the climate. Therefore, because the saturated soil theory has limitations, the application of the unsaturated soil theory is necessary for slope stability. It is also important to evaluate the engineering properties of unsaturated soil because the capillary absorption capacity is reduced due to heavy rain, thereby causing a reduction in slope stability. In this study, soil-water characteristic tests were performed using four samples with different fine contents (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) using granite-weathered soil in domestic production areas. In particular, to consider the previously conducted drying process as well as the evaluation of stability due to heavy rain on the actual slope, a wetting process was conducted, in which the water content was increased. In addition, the van Genuchten (1980) model, which is the most consistent theoretical equation for the experiment, was used with various theoretical equations, and the parameters were analyzed according to the fine content of the granite-weathered soil for the drying and wetting processes.
The frost heaving pressure can be a problem for weakening of the railway roadbed material. This study was initiated to investigate the soils frost heaving pressure and physical characteristics(Liquid limit, permeability, SEM analysis) resulting from freezing and freezing-thawing cycle process. Therefore, upon freezing a saturated soil in a closed-system from the top, a considerable pressure was developed. Weathered granite soils, sandy soil were used in the laboratory freezing test which sometimes subjected to thermal gradients under closed-systems. The frost heaving pressure arising within the soil samples and the temperature of the samples inside were monitored with elapsed time. The degree of saturation versus heaving pressure curve is also presented for weathered granite soil and the maximum pressure is closely related to this curve. Based on the laboratory test results, fine-grained soils with strong attractive forces between soil grains md water molecules, and additional water is attracted into the pores leading to further volume changes and ice segregation.

In this study, the fly ash was employed as a possible alternative to the bentonite for its high sorption capacity against cationic heavy metal. To consider the constituents of barrier possibly used, the specimens were mixed with different material contents (fly ash : weathered soil : bentonite), then sorption test was performed. Also the specimens were molded on the wet side of optimum moisture contents like mixing ratio of sorption test and their hydraulic conductivities were measured in flexible-wall permeameters. And to confirm the effect of dissolved cations, the hydraulic conductivity tests were repeated by converting the permeant liquids from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution. Finally, the Cd-concentration at the effluent was analyzed for 500hrs to compare the effectiveness of each specimen in contaminant retardation. Test results showed that the more the ratio of fly ash increase, the more Kd value increase, and the hydraulic conductivity of weathered soil/bentonite (95:5) mixture was the lowest $(2.9*10^{-8}cm/sec)$, and specimens made of fly ash and fly ash/weathered soil mixtures showed similar hydraulic conductivity. Although the permeant liquid was changed from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution, the hydraulic conductivity of all specimens except for weathered soil maintained similarly like before. Consequently, the initial breakthrough point of Cd in weathered soil specimen was observed at about 5hrs after the test started while that of fly ash specimens was not observed during the whole test period of 500hrs. The results implied that fly ash had a sufficient retardation capacity against contaminant transport possibly by its high sorption capacity although it showed little effect on the reduction of hydraulic conductivity. Based on the test results, it could be concluded that the fly ash can be possibly used as a suitable barrier material in containment system to attenuate the contaminant transport for its high retardation capacity and for the low cost.
This paper discusses contents of the existing design, the behaviours prediction on the strut and retaining wall around subsurfaces, and also evaluates the measured results in comparison with the management criterion during excavation period of ventilation shaft at Pusan-Subway 220. Field measurements showed that maximum displacement 23.74 mm at boundary site of multistratification and the weathered rock to be formed at 0.2~0.6 H of total excavating depth(H), 68 ton of maximum axial force and 4.4X102 kg/cm2 of stress on strut. The measured axial force exceeds prediction levels by up to 50 percent at the weathered soil & rock, and the others come under the category of their levels. The great gap of both field measurements and prediction on behaviour makes a difference of the site situation at the design stage and the practical working. This measured value is greatly safety in comparison with that of the safety criterion, but axial force at 4~5 strut of ventilation shaft l is higher than the prediction.
The purpose of 1,his study is to analyze the compression and strength charactefistics of the decomposed -weathered soil originating from biotite gneiss or fine grained gneiss sampled from Poidong, Seoul : to figure out the behavioural characteristics of the decomposed -weathered soil in accordance with mineral composition and origin by comparing experimental results of residual soils. originating from granites and sampled from Bulam, Andong and Kimchun area. A series of CIU, CID CKoV, CKoD tests were car lied out. Although weathered soils have different origin and mineral composition, the slope of the NCL A was similar. It was also shown that plastic strain ratio was about 85% mainly due to the particle crushing effect during compression. The Poidong soil showed strain softening phenomenon unlike the Kimchun and Andong soils. this implies that the behavioural characteristics are affected by the origin and the mineral composition of the soil particles. Moreover, it was found that the angle of the shear resistance$(\phi')$ was dependent on the mineral composition. On the oher hand, measured Af values of decomposed weathered soils were more than one regardless of the origin and the mineral composition.

This paper addresses the size effect of shallow foundation settlement in very dense weathered granite soil commonly encountered in bridge foundation. Load-settlement curves measured from the plate load tests of 5 different plate sizes in 2 sites were analyzed. The test results showed that the ground beneath the plate was considered not to reach the failure state and the settlement continuously increased proportionately as load increased. The result implies that settlement would govern the stability or serviceability of foundation on very dense weathered soil. The size effect is expressed as a relationship of subgrade reaction modulus to the size of plate. Compared with the previous relationships, the size effect in this result was more prominent and indicated that settlement prediction using the previous method could possibly underestimate the settlement of foundation in dense weathered granite soil.
