  • The quality of tool material is very important factor in machining evaluation. The characteristics of tungsten carbide, such as grain size and hardness, and density are depending on the variation of Co composition and WC size. In this study, the non-coated end mill which is made of ultra-fine tungsten carbide is investigated by measuring tool wear and tool lift test. The machining test is conducted with high hardened workpiece under high-speed cutting condition.

D.C magnetron sputter법으로 증착된 TiAlN의 중간층에 따른 특성연구 (Characteristics of TiAlN Film on Different Buffer Layer by D.C Magnetron Sputter)

  • TiAlN films were deposited on WC-5Co substrates with different buffer layers by D.C. magnetron sputtering. The films were evaluated by microstructural observations and measuring of preferred orientation, hardness value, and adhesion force. As a process variable, various buffer layers were used such as TiAlN single layer, TiAlN/TiAl, TiAlN/TiN and TiAlN/CrN. TiAlN coating layer showed columnar structures which grew up at a right angle to the substrates. The thickness of the TiAlN coating layer was about $1.8{\mu}m$, which was formed for 200 minutes at $300^{\circ}$. XRD analysis showed that the preferred orientation of TiAlN layer with TiN buffer layer was (111) and (200), and the specimens of TiAlN/TiAl, TiAlN/CrN, TiAlN single layer have preferred orientation of (111), respectively. TiAlN single layer and TiAlN/TiAl showed good adhesion properties, showing an over 80N adhesion force, while TiAlN/TiN film showed approximately 13N and the TiAlN/CrN was the worst case, in which the layer was destroyed because of high internal residual stress. The value of micro vickers hardness of the TiAlN single layer, TiAlN/TiAl and TiAlN/TiN layers were 2711, 2548 and 2461 Hv, respectively.

  • A study on the temperature distribution of tungsten carbide alloy steel(WC-Co) in surface grinding was conducted to improve the surface finish and to find optimum grinding conditions which would lead to efficient grinding operation by theoretical finite element method analysis and experimental test of workpiece under various conditions. Based on the comparixion of test results and FEM analysis data, it is concluded that the FEM computer simulation of heat transfer is useful in predicting the temperature distribution of test material that the increase of temperature is more infuleneced by the grinding depth than the grinding speed. And that the grinding energy flux of dey grinding is 4 to 6 time greater than wet grinding regardless of grinding speed and finally that the heat transfer does not take place in depth deeper than 3mm from the grinding surface.

상압 플라즈마 용사의 공정조건에 따른 세라믹 피막의 특성 (Effect of Processing Conditions for Atmospheric Plasma Spraying on Characteristics of Ceramic Coatings)

  • The characteristics of the high-performance ceramic coatings fabricated on the optimum processings con-ditions for the atmospheric plasma spraying are evaluated by various material tests and analyses. The opti-mum processing parameters for the plasma spraying are determined by using the two-level orthogonal arrays of fractional factorial testing method as a statistical approach. Material tests for the coating specimens are carried out to evaluate microstructure, hardness, adhesion strength, and deposition efficiency. The properties of Al2O3-13%TiO2 coating are discussed with regard to the effective processings parameters. The decarburization effects of WC-12%Co coating is examined by XRD analysis in terms of the arc power and the secondary gas species. The hardness of Al2O2-13%TiO2 coating is increased with the arc power and shows the maximum value at around 40 lpm of Ar gas flowrate, which appears to be the most critical parame-ter on the deposition efficiency. For reducing the decarburization of WC-12%Co coating, the injection of inert He gas instead of reactive H2 gas as a secondary gas is more effective than the dropping of arc power to lessen the plasma enthalpy.

  • As electrode materials like as Cu-Pb, Cu-Bi, WC-Ag, W-Ag for vacuum circuit breaker have high chopping current or bad insulation-recovery characteristics, it can affect induction machinery like as transformer and motor. To produce low surge electrode material, it have been suggested Co-Ag-Se electrode which were infiltrated with Ag-Se intermetallic compound into sintered Co matrix. In this study, we would like to represent that production method and microstructure of Co-Ag-Se electrode material. The microstructure and characteristics of Ag-Se intermetallic compound and Co-(Ag-Se) electrode were investigated by using SEM, XRD, EPMA.

초 고온·고압 소결 공정으로 제조된 다결정 다이아몬드 컴팩트의 열충격 특성에 미치는 다이아몬드 입자 크기의 영향 (Effect of Diamond Particle Size on the Thermal Shock Property of High Pressure High Temperature Sintered Polycrystalline Diamond Compact)

  • This study investigates the thermal shock property of a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) produced by a high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) sintering process. Three kinds of PDCs are manufactured by the HPHT sintering process using different particle sizes of the initial diamond powders: $8-16{\mu}m$ ($D50=4.3{\mu}m$), $10-20{\mu}m$ ($D50=6.92{\mu}m$), and $12-22{\mu}m$ ($D50=8.94{\mu}m$). The microstructure observation results for the manufactured PDCs reveal that elemental Co and W are present along the interface of the diamond particles. The fractions of Co and WC in the PDC increase as the initial particle size decreases. The manufactured PDCs are subjected to thermal shock tests at two temperatures of $780^{\circ}C$ and $830^{\circ}C$. The results reveal that the PDC with a smaller particle size of diamond easily produces microscale thermal cracks. This is mainly because of the abundant presence of Co and WC phases along the diamond interface and the easy formation of Co-based (CoO, $Co_3O_4$) and W-based ($WO_2$) oxides in the PDC using smaller diamond particles. The microstructural factors for controlling the thermal shock property of PDC material are also discussed.

  • In plasma source ion implantation, the target is immersed in the plasma and repetitively biased by negative high voltage pulses to implant the extracted ions from plasma into the surface of the target material. In this way, the problems of line-of-sight implantation in ion-beam ion implantation technique can be effectively solved. In addition, the high dose rate and simplicity of the equipment enable the ion implantation a commercially affordable process. In this work, plasma source ion implantation technique was used to improve the wear resistance of Co-cemented WC. which has been extensively used for high speed tools. Nitrogen and carbon ions were implanted using the pulse bias of -602kV, 25 sec and at various implantation conditions. The implanted samples were examined using scanning Auger electron spectroscopy and XPS to investigate the depth distributions of implanted ions and to reveal the chemical state change due to the ion implantation. The implanted ions were found to have penetrated to the depth of 3000$\AA$. The wear resistance of the implanted samples was measured using pin-on-disc wear tester and the wear tracks were examined with alpha-step profilometer.

  • Recent developing tendency of overlay welding on welding materials are studied by searching of NDSL, Science Direct, KIPRIS and so on. Fe, Co, Ni and WC are selected as welding materials. Development and improvement of various new overlay welding technology, especially improvement of quality and formation of crack are introduced. Also the prospective technologies of overlay welding are anticipated.

  • Airless spray which is widely used for painting to ship blocks and hull sides is the coating method for attaching atomized paint material to the substrate using spray tip nozzle with compressed air. When the paint material which has high solid contents such as epoxy primer paint is atomized by passing through spray tip nozzle with high pressure, the nozzle composed of tungsten carbide(WC) undergoes the erosive wear, leading to widening of nozzle hole. The deformation of nozzle hole induces improper spray pattern and coating failures such as finger pattern and sagging because the conditions of spray pump pressure and paint flow rate for developing full spray pattern are changed. In this study, an appropriate replacement cycle of spray tip was predicted by measuring the erosive wear tendency as increasing the spraying time of epoxy primer paint.

SM490B 용접부의 피로균열 성장 거동에 미치는 초고속 용사코팅 효과 (The Effect of High Velocity Oxygen Fuel Thermal Spray Coating on Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior for Welded SM490B)

  • High velocity oxygen-fuel thermal spray coating of the WC-Co cermet material is a well-established process for modifying the surface properties of the structural components exposed to the corrosive and wear attacks, and also these coating are well-known method to improve the fatigue strength of material. In this study, HVOF coated SM490B are prepared to evaluation of the effect of coating on tension and fatigue crack growth behavior. The pre-crack of the fatigue crack growth test specimens machined at deposited material area, heat affected zone and boundary, respectively. Through these test, the following results are obtained: 1) Tensile strength was about 498 MPa, and fracture occurred on base metal area. 2) The fatigue crack of coated specimens propagated more rapidly than non-coated specimen in all specimens. 3) In the same coating thickness specimens, the specimens with pre-crack at boundary more rapidly propagated than the specimens with pre-crack at HAZ and deposited material area. These results can be used as basic data in a structural integrity evaluation of rolled SM490B weldments considering HVOF coating.
