The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of water stress on yield and quality of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. The water stress treatment was imposed artificially on seedling, flowering and rhizome enlargement stage of the plant. The root yield rate decreased to 19.1%, 18.2% and by the water stress treatment at rhizome enlargement, seedling and flowering stage, respectively. Portion of the products having commercial quality grade (above 20g of rhizome weight) was 93.4% at control plot, while it was 85%, 81.7% and 78.3% when stressed for water at seedling, flowering and root enlargement stage, respectively. Content of extract was the higher in the order of control, water stressed at rhizome enlargement, flowering and the seedling stage. Postive correlationship was found between yield of rhizome and rootlet yield or economic production ratio, and between dry weight of stem and rootlet yield.
Korea has plentiful precipitation but rainfall events concentrate on several months of rainy season in her weather condition. Korea, therefore, experiences drought for a given period every year. Moreover the soil has usually low water holding capacity, as it is composed coarse particles originated from the granite. Response of several oaks and the Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) on water stress showed that water budget was significant factor determining vegetation distribution. In addition, dehydration level due to cold resistance mechanism of several evergreen plants during the winter season was closely related to their distribution in natural condition. Experimental result under water stress showed that the Korean red pine was very tolerant to desiccation but the seedlings showed high mortality during the dry season. The mortality tended to proportionate to soil moisture content of each site. A comparison between soil moisture content during June when it is severe dry season and moisture content of the culture soil when the pine seedlings reached the permanent wilting point due to water withheld proved that high mortality during the dry season was due to water deficit. Water potential of sample plants measured during the exposure experiment to the air pollutant showed a probability that water related factors would dominate the occurrence of visible damage and the tolerance level of sample plants. In both field survey and laboratory experiment, plants exposed to air pollution showed more rapid transpiration than those grown in the unpolluted condition. The result would due to injury of leaf surface by air pollutants. Aluminum (Al/sup 3+/) increased in the acid soil not only inhibits root growth but also leads to abnormal distribution of root system and thereby caused water stress. The water stresses due to air pollution and soil acidification showed a possibility that they play dominating roles in inducing forest decline additionally to the existing water deficit due to weather and soil conditions in Korea. Sludge, which can contribute to improve field capacity, as it is almost composed of organic matter, showed an effect ameliorating the retarded growth of plant in the acidified soil. The effect was not less than that of dolomite known in widely as such a soil ameliorator. Litter extract contributed also to mitigate the water stress due to toxic Al/sup 3+/. We prepared a model showing the potential interaction of multiple stresses, which can cause forest decline in Korea by synthesizing those results. Furthermore, we suggested restoration plans, which can mitigate such forest decline in terms of soil amelioration and vegetation restoration.

One of the main degradation mechanisms in steam generator tubes is stress corrosion cracking induced by residual stress. The resulting damages can cause tube bursting or leakage of the primary water which contains radioactivity. Shot peening technique has been used to prevent stress corrosion crack growth in steam generator tubes. In order to investigate the shot peening effect on stress corrosion cracking stress intensity factors are calculated for the semi-elliptical surface crack which is located in residual stress region. The residual stress distribution in steam generator tubes is obtained from the simple model proposed by Frederick et al.
The flood wave generated due to dam break is affected by initial depth upstream since it is related with hydraulic characteristics propagating downstream, and flow resistance stress has influence on the celerity, travel distance, and approaching depth of shock wave in implementing numerical simulation. In this study, a shallow water flow model employing SU/PG scheme was developed and verified by analytic solutions; propagation characteristics of dam break according to flow resistance and initial depth were analyzed. When bottom frictional stress was applied, the flow depth was relatively higher while the travel distance of shock wave was shorter. In the case of Coulomb stress, the flow velocity behind the location of dam break became lower compared with other cases, and showed values between no stress and turbulent stress at the reach of shock wave. The value of Froude number obtained by no frictional stress at the discontinuous boundary was the closest to 1.0 regardless of initial depth. The adaption of Coulomb stress gave more appropriate results compared with turbulent stress at low initial depth. However, as the initial depth became increased, the dominance of flow resistance terms was weakened and the opposite result was observed.
Several sensors have been developed for soil and plants to assess plant stress due to climate change. Therefore, the objective of the study is to nondestructively evaluate temperature stress on plant by monitoring climatic and soil conditions and plant responses using various sensors. Plant responses were monitored by electrical conductivity in plant stem and sap flow rate. Electrical conductivity in plant stem reflects the physiological activity of plants including water and ion transport. Fully grown Brassica oleracea var. italica was exposed to 20/15 ℃ (day/night) with 16 h photoperiods as a control, low temperature 15/10 ℃, and high temperature 35/30 ℃ while climatic, soil, and plant conditions were monitored. Electrical conductivity in plant stem and sap flow rate increased during the day and decreased at night. Under low temperature stress, electrical conductivity in plant stem of Brassica oleracea var. italica was lower than control while under high temperature stress, it was higher than control indicating that water and ion transport was affected. However, chlorophyll a and b increased in leaves subjected to low temperature stress and there was no significant difference between high temperature stressed leaves and control. Free proline contents in the leaves did not increase under low temperature stress, but increased under high temperature stress. Proline synthesis in plant is a defense mechanism under environmental stress. Therefore, Brassica oleracea var. Italica appears to be more susceptible to high temperature stress than low temperature.
Oxidative stress is implicated in a number of diseases, in ageing of organisms, and in damage to plants that have been exposed to freezing and thawing or water stress. From the perspective of yeast as a model eukaryotic system, this article reviews the systems that are involved in the cellular responses to exposure to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during aerobic growth of the organism. The discussion includes the defense systems involved, the ability of cells to adapt to ROS treatment, cell-division cycle delay and the systems regulating gene expression that are activated by oxidative stress.
Using the milled, blast infected leaves (BIL) as an inoculum source on the screening for the resistance to blast of rice plant was a simple and useful technique. The temperature with high (25^\circ C\sim 35^\circ C) and low (15^\circ C\sim 28^\circ C) and the water stressed or not, was conditioned of to the inoculation with the BIL to the test varieties in seedling stage. In low temperature, most of the varieties were more infected with blast, however the Indica-Japonica hybrids were more infected in high temperature conditions. The water stressed was more infected with blast than the not stressed. The interaction of variety with water stress was not so much as that of variety with temperature. Resistant reaction to blast (BIL) was not affected by the temperature and water stress, but the moderately resistant or susceptible one was much affected by them. Inoculum of BIL was virulent to the newly bred Indica-Japonica hybrid cultivars such as Tongil, Nopung, etc, but not virulent to the Japonica cultivars such as Nongbaek, Jinheung, etc. The discrete, mixed or variable lesions were observed mainly in the moderately resistant or susceptible cultivars such as Kanto 51, Yashiromochi, Ishikari-shiroke, etc.
The matric suction and volumetric water content of Jumunin standard sand with a relative density of 60% were measured using an Automated Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) apparatus during both drying and wetting processes. The test time for the drying process was longer than that for the wetting process, because the flow of water is likely to be protected by air trapped in voids within the soils during the drying process. Based on the matric suction and volumetric water content, the SWCC was estimated using the model proposed by van Genuchten (1980). For the drying process, the unsaturated fitting parameters ${\alpha}$, n, and m were 0.399, 8.586, and 0.884, respectively; for the wetting process, the values were 0.548, 5.625, and 8.220, respectively. The hysteresis phenomenon occurred in the SWCCs, which means the SWCC of the drying process is not matched with the SWCC of the wetting process. Using these unsaturated parameters, we estimated the Suction Stress Characteristic Curve (SSCC), based on the relationship between suction stress and the effective degree of saturation. The suction stress showed a rapid decrease when the matric suction exceeds the Air Entry Value (AEV). Therefore, the effective stress of unsaturated soils is different from that of saturated soils when the matric suction exceeds the AEV. The suction stress of the drying process exceeds that of the wetting process for a given effective degree of saturation. The hysteresis phenomenon was also recognized in SSCCs. The hysteresis phenomenon of SSCCs arises from that of SWCCs, which is induced by the ink bottle effect and the contact angle effect. In the case of a sandy slope, the suction stress is positive and acts to enhance the slope stability as the water infiltrates the ground, but is negative when the suction stress exceeds the AEV. The results obtained for the wetting process should be applied in analyses of slope stability, because the process of water infiltration into ground is similar to the wetting process.

To accurately estimate nearshore current in shallow water regions. it is necessary to investigate the irregular wave transformation characteristics and radiation stress produced by random sea waves. This research is to investigate the application or the individual wave Analysis Method. the Component Wave Analysis Method and Representative Wave Analysis Method in the shallow water region. These methods were estimated by wave shallowing transformation when the waves propagate from deep water to shallow water region b)r generating regular waves, two component waves and irregular waves (Bretschneider-Mitsuyasu type). That is, the Indivisual Wave Analysis Method is to investigate from the viewpoint of shallow water transformation of wave statistical characteristics and their zero-down-crossing waves (wave height period and wave celerity). And the component Wave Analysis Method is to investigate from the view point of shallow water transformation of basic frequency component wave and their interference frequency component wave. In addition, this research is to compare the measured mean water level elevation with the calculated one from radiation stress of irreguar waves that is assumed in the three methods above.
Red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) seedlings inoculated with Frankia pure cultures were grown in a walk-in growth chamber for sixteen weeks. Half were inoculated with the spores of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Alpova diplophloeus (Zeller & Dodge) Trappe & Smith. The mycorrhizal seedlings were significantly larger than nonmycorrhizal plants in diameter, and nodule and shoot dry weight by 6 to 16% when their heights were very similar. The mycorrhizal effects on water relations of red alder seedlings were explored in a 30 hours water stress. Mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal seedlings did not significantly differ in leaf water potentials, $CO_2$ exchange rates or $N_2$-fixation rates during the drought. Our results suggests that A. diplophloeus mycorrhizas increased red alder seedling growth under well-watered conditions but do not affect water relations of the plant under water-stress.
