  • This paper presents the development and performance of a power conditioning system (PCS) for application to a 100kw Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell. (MCFC) generation system. The MCFC generation system is a part of a four year government funded research project that began in 2001. This paper presents the results of operation connected to an actual fuel cell stack at a field demonstration site. and this paper shows various tests and performance verification of the 100kW PCS using a simulated DC source.

  • This paper presents design and implementation of the LDC(1.8 kW DC-DC Converter for Electric Vehicles). For Implementation of the LDC, the adapted topology is ZVS(Zero Voltage Switching) PSFB(Phase Shift Full Bridge) with Digital Control is adopted. Also, for the purpose of stable operation of the LDC in vehicle with variable electrical load condition, Continuous Voltage and Current Limit Control scheme based on PI controller are developed. According to real-car test mode, the prototype of proposed the LDC is verified with performance and stability. Thus, optimizing design and implement of the LDC are discussed, and experimental results are presented.

Polymerization of 3-Ethynylphenol Try Transition Metal Catalysts

  • The polymerization of 3-ethynylphenol, phenylacetylene having hydroxy functionality, was carried out by tungsten and molybdenum-based transition metal catalysts. The polymerization proceeded to give a moderate yield of polymer. The effects on the mole ratio of monomer to catalyst (M/C), initial monomer concentration ((Mb), and the polymerization temperature for the polymerization of 3-ethynylphenol were investigated. The catalytic activity of W-based catalysts was found to be greater than that of Mo-based catalysts. The resulting polymers were brown or black powders and mostly insoluble in organic solvents. Structural analysis of the polymer by instrumental methods revealed the conjugated polymer backbone structure carrying hydroxyphenyl moieties. Thermal and morphological properties of the resulting poly(3-ethynylphenol) were also discussed.

Deposition of $SiC_xN_y$ Thin Film as a Membrane Application

  • $SiC_{x}N$_{y}$ film is deposited by electron cyclotron resonance plasma chemical vapor deposition system using $SiH_4$(5% in Ar), $CH_4$ and $N_2$. Ternary phase $SiC_{x}N$_{y}$ thin film deposited at the microwave power of 600 W and substrate temperature of 700 contains considerable amount of strong C-N bonds. Change in $CH_4$flow rate can effectively control the residual film stress, and typical surface roughness of 34.6 (rms) was obtained. Extreme]y high hardness (3952 Hv) and optical transmittance (95% at 633 nm) was achieved, which is suitable for a LIGA mask membrane application.

Search for new red phosphors under NUV/blue excitation - the stimulating future for solid state lighting

  • Research on down conversion phosphor materials is the key for the development of solid state lighting (SSL). Especially finding alternative red phosphor for white LEDs based on blue or NUV LEDs are important research task. Under this view, we have synthesized a series of $Eu^{3+}$ substituted $La_2W_{2-x}Mo_xO_9$ (x = 0 ~ 2, insteps of 0.1) red phosphor and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence. XRD results reveal a phase transition from triclinic to cubic structure for $x\;{\geq}\;0$. All the compositions show broad charge transfer band due to charge transfer from oxygen to tungsten/molybdenum and red emission due to $Eu^{3+}$ ions. Select compositions show high red emission intensity compared to the commercial red phosphor under NUV/blue ray excitation. Hence, this candidate can be possible red emitting phosphors for white LEDs.

  • 필자와 비슷한 또래로 1980년대에 중·고등학교를 다녔던 서른 중반의 아저씨 혹은 아줌마라면, 그 당시 한창 유행했던 휴대용 카세트테이프 플레이어를 기억할 것이다. 대표적인 제품이었던 일본 S사의 W 상표를 가진 플레이어를 가방에서 꺼내 이어폰을 꽂고 있는 것만으로도 주위 친구들의 부러움을 사곤 했다. 등하교 길에 전영록과 김현식 같은 가수의 테이프를 듣고, 야간 자율학습 시간에 FM라디오로 가위바위보나 별밤과 같은 프로그램을 듣기도 했다. 이제는 시간이 지나 등하교 대신에 출퇴근을 하는 입장이지만, 눈에 비춰지는 모습은예전 모습과 일견 비슷해 보이기도 하다. 귀에 이어폰을 꽂고 무언가를 듣고 있는 모습은 줄곧 봐왔던 행태다. 하지만, 뭔가 다르다. 듣는 것 뿐만 아니라 이제는 보기까지 한다. 손에 든 기기의 액정화면을 통해 영화를 보고, 교육방송을 보고, TV를 보고, 게임을 한다. 시간은 세상을 이렇게 바꾸어 놓았다.

  • Thick diamond film having ~700${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness was deposited on polycrystalline molybdenum (Mo) substrate using high power (4kW) microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) system. We could achieve free-standing diamond film via detaching as-deposited diamond film from the substrate by rapid cooling them under vacuum. We investigated the variation of photoconductivity after exposing the film surface to either oxygen or hydrogen plasma. At as-grown state, the growth side (the as-grown surface of the film) showed noticeable photoconductivity. The oxygen plasma treatment of this side led to the insulator. After exposing the film surface to hydrogen plasma, on the other hand, we could observe the reappearing of photoconductivity at the growth side. Based on these results, we suggest that the hydrogen plasma treatment may enhance the photoconductivity of free-standing diamond film.

Characterization of instability in a-Si:H TFT LCD utilizing copper as electrodes

  • The hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin film transistor (a-Si:H TFT) with copper as source and drain electrode has been fabricated to obtain its transfer characteristics and stressed with positive and negative bias to investigate the instability variation comparing to conventional MoW-Al based TFT device. The results show that there is no copper diffusion into active layer of a-Si:H TFT, even during the thermal process. In addition, a 15-inch XGA a Si:H TFT LCD display utilizing Cu as gate electrodes has been developed.

  • The reliability of TFT, crystallized by sequential lateral solidification (SLS) technology, has been studied High current damage is characterized by high gate bias (-20V) and drain bias (-10V). It is found that performance of SLS TFTs is enhanced by high current stress up to 300 sec of stress time for 20/8 (W/L) N-TFT. After that, TFT performance is degraded with the increase of the stress time. It is speculated from the experimental data that SLS TFTs initially contain a number of unstable defect states. Then, the defect states seem to be cured by high current stress.

  • The high-strength concrete(HSC) compared to normal concrete represents higher autogenous shrinkage due to lower water-to-binder ratio(W/B) and supplementaries, fly ash(FA) and granulated blast-furnace slag(BFS), etc. The potential of early age cracking which reduces durability of concrete structures is normally influenced by autogenous shrinkage and degree of restraint. Therefore, this paper studies on the evaluation of the characteristics of autogenous shrinkage for HSC, ultra-high-strength concrete(UHSC) containing admixtures by experimental test and the test results are compared with existed prediction models.
