  • Dynamics of molten drop detachment in the Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding is investigated using the Volume of Fluid(VOF) method. The electromagnetic effects are included in the formulation of the VOF method which has been widely used to analyze the dynamics of the fluid having a free surface. The molten drop geometry, pressure and velocity profiles within the drop are calculated numerically in the cases of globular and spray transfer modes. It appears that the velocity and current distribution affect metal detachment. It is found that the taper is formed and maintained during the spray transfer by the electromagnetic force. Predicted results show reasonably good agreement with the available experimental data which validates the application of the VOF method to metal transfer analysis.

  • This study is intended to analyze the effect of thin ink-film thickness around rotating printing roll on the printing quality in the gravure printing process which is used for making electronics circuit like a RFID tag with a conductive ink. The present work numerically estimates the film thickness around rotating roller partially immersed in ink, for which the volume of fluid (VOF) method was adopted to figure out the film formation process around rotating roller. Parameter studies were performed to compare the effect of ink viscosity, surface tension, roller rotating speed, immersed angle on the film thickness. The result indicates that the film thickness has a strong dependency on the fluid viscosity, while the surface tension has negligible effect.

  • A fine hot-wire is used both as a heating element and a temperature sensor in transient hot-wire method. The traditional sensor system is unnecessarily big so that it takes large fluid volume to measure the thermal conductivity. To dramatically reduce this fluid volume, a new sensor fabrication and a data processing method are proposed in this article. Contrast to the conventional and most popular two wire sensor, the new sensor system is made up of divided multiple long and short wires. Through validation experiments, it is found that the measured thermal conductivities of the glycerin are exactly same each other between the conventional and proposed new method. Also some technical considerations in arranging the multiple wires are briefly discussed.

  • A conservative finite-volume method for computing 3-D flow with an unstructured cell-centered method has been extended to free surface flows or two-fluid systems with topologically complex interfaces. It is accomplished by implementing the high resolution method(CICSAM) by Ubbink(1997) for the accurate capturing of fluid interfaces on unstructured meshes, which is based on the finite-volume technique and is fully conservative. The calculated results with the present method are compared to show the ease and accuracy with available numerical and experimental results reported in the literature.

  • This work aims to simulate three-dimensional heavy oil flow in a reservoir with heater-wells. Mass, momentum and energy balances, as well as correlations for rock and fluid properties, are used to obtain non-linear partial differential equations for the fluid pressure and temperature, and for the rock temperature. Heat transfer is simulated using a two-equation model that is more appropriate when fluid and rock have very different thermal properties, and we also perform comparisons between one- and two-equation models. The governing equations are discretized using the Finite Volume Method. For the numerical solution, we apply a linearization and an operator splitting. As a consequence, three algebraic subsystems of linearized equations are solved using the Conjugate Gradient Method. The results obtained show the suitability of the numerical method and the technical feasibility of heating the reservoir with static equipment.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the momentum and heat transfer of a rotating nanofluid with conducting spherical dust particles. The fluid flows over a stretching surface under the influence of an external magnetic field. By applying similarity transformations, the governing partial differential equations were trans-formed into nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations. These equations were solved with the built-in function bvp4c in MATLAB. Moreover, the effects of the rotation parameter ω, magnetic field parameter M, mass concentration of the dust particles α, and volume fraction of the nano particles 𝜙, on the velocity and temperature profiles of the fluid and dust particles were considered. The results agree well with those in published papers. According to the result the hikes in the rotation parameter ω decrease the local Nusselt number, and the increasing volume fraction of the nano particles 𝜙 increases the local Nusselt number. Moreover the friction factor along the x and y axes increases with increasing volume fraction of the nano particles 𝜙.

  • Dynamic behavior of the molten drop during the peak period in the pulsed-GMAW is simulated in this work using the VOF(volume of the fluid) algerian. The dynamic characteristics of molten drop such as minimum radius, average velocity and displacement of mass center were computed as well as the internal pressure and velocity. The minimum and maximum peak durations for detaching a drop were calculated.. The result of Analysis reveals that peak current and volume of pendant drop are important factors which affecting drop detachment. A simplified model of constant acceleration is proposed to describe the behavior of molten drop during peak current, and its results agree with the experimental results.

  • A Navier-Stokes code has been developed to simulate the flow through a cross flow fan. It is based on an unstructured finite volume method and uses moving grid technique to model the rotation of the fan. A low Reynolds number turbulence model is used to calculate eddy viscosity. The basic algorithm is SIMPLE. Numerical simulations over a wide range of flow rate aye carried out to validate the code. Comparison of all numerical solutions with experimental data confirms the validity of the present code. Present numerical solutions show a noticeable improvement over a previous numerical method which is based on a model of body force to simulate the rotation of the impeller.
