Droplet impinging into a cavity at micro-scale is one of important fluidic issues for microfabrications, e.g. bio-chip applications and inkjet deposition processes in the PLED panel manufacturing. The droplets generally dispensing from an inkjet head, which contains an array of nozzles, have a volume in several picoliters, while each nozzle jets the droplets into cavities with micron-meter size located on substrates. Due to measurement difficulties at micro-scale, the numerical simulation could serve as an efficient and preliminary way to evaluate the micro-sized droplet impinging behavior into a cavity. The micro-fluidic flow is computed by solving the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations through a finite volume discretization. The droplet front is predicted by a volume-of-fluid approach, in which the surface tension is modeled as a function of the fluid concentration. This paper discusses the influence of fluid properties, such as surface tension and fluid viscosity, on micro-fluidic characteristics at different jetting speeds in the deposition process via the proposed numerical approach.
Fluid-body interaction analysis of floating body with six degree-of-freedom motion is presented. In this study, three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are employed as a governing equation. The numerical method is based on a finite-volume approach on a cartesian grid together with a fractional-step method. To represent the body motion, the immersed boundary method for direct forcing is employed. In order to simulate the coupled six degree-of-freedom motion, Euler's equations based on rigid body dynamics are utilized. To represent the complex body shape, level-set based algorithm is utilized. In order to describe the free surface motion, the volume of fluid method utilizing the tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing scheme is employed. This study showed three different continuums(air, water and body) are simultaneously simulated by newly developed code. To demonstrate the applicability of the current approach, two different problems(dam-breaking with stationary obstacle and water entry) are simulated and all results are validated.
The thermosyphon SDHWS and the loop type thermosyphon systems are widely used for domestic hot water system. The loop type thermosyphon is a circulation device for transferring the heat produced at the evaporator to the condenser area in the loop. In this study, the operating characteristics of various working fluids being used have been identified. The working fluids employed in the study were ethanol. water, and a binary mixture of ethanol and water. The volume of working fluid used in this study were 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% and 70% of evaporator volume. It is observed that, in the thermosyphon with low volume of working fluid, such as 30% or 40%, the fluid was dried out. The flow pattern and mechanism of the heat transfer were identified through this study. Flow patterns of the binary mixture working fluid were also investigated, and the patterns were recorded in the camera. The system parameters were calculated using the thermal performance data. Modelling of the system was carried out using PSTAR method and TRNSYS program.
We conduct numerical simulations of the interaction of a deformable structure with two-phase compressible flow. The finite volume method (FVM) is used to simulate fluid phenomena including a shock wave, a gas bubble, and the deformation of free surface. The deformation of a floating structure is computed with the finite element method (FEM). The compressible two-phase volume of fluid (VOF) method is used for the generation and development of a cavitation bubble, and the immersed boundary method (IBM) is used to impose the effect of the structure on the fluid domain. The result of the simulation shows the generation of a shock wave, and the expansion of the bubble. Also, the deformation of the structure due to the hydrodynamic loading by the explosion is identified.
The numerical simulation of wave slamming on a 3D platform deck was investigated using a coupled Level-Set and Volume-of-Fluid (CLSVOF) method for overset grid system incorporated into the Finite-Analytic Navier-Stokes (FANS) method. The predicted slamming impact forces were compared with the corresponding experimental data. The comparisons showed that the CLSVOF method is capable of accurately predicting the slamming impact and capturing the violent free surface flow including wave slamming, wave inundation and wave recession. Moreover, the capability of the present CLSVOF method for overset grid system is a prominent feature to handle the prediction of wave slamming on offshore structure.
Urine analysis is one of the most important medical examination in the hospital. Not only the data for the ingredients of urine through chemical analysis, but also the data related to fluid dynamics, e.g., peak flow rate, average flow rate, may provide some useful information about patient's state of health. Therefore, we develop the portable system to measure and analyse fluid volume/flow rate in this study. This system can store and print the measured data during the pre-specified time interval, and provide some meaningful data related with fluid dynamics. We explain the method and the technical stuff to implement the system, and show the result.

Flow over a bluff body is an attractive research field in thermal engineering. In the present study, laminar flow over a confined heated square cylinder using CuO-Water nanofluid is considered. Unsteady two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved numerically using finite volume method (FVM). Recent correlations for the thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids, which are function of nanoparticle volume fraction, temperature and nanoparticle diameter, have been employed. The results of numerical solution are obtained for Richardson number, nanoparticle volume fractions and nanoparticle diameters ranges of 0-1, 1-5% and 30-100 nm respectively for a fixed Reynolds number of Re = 150. At a given volume concentration, the investigations reveal that the decreasing in size of nanoparticles produces an increase in heat transfer rates from the square cylinder and a decrease in amplitude of the lift coefficient. Also, the increment of Nusselt number is more pronounced at higher concentrations and higher Richardson numbers.
It is well known that the height of tank metacenter above the centroid of fluid in a tank is given by i/v where I is the inertia moment of free surface and v is the fluid volume. It is supposed in this formula that the inclination of ship is small and that the free surface of fluid do not touch the top and the bottom of tank. It the inclination of ship is large, the height of tank metacenter may be possibly greater than that given by i/v. The height of tank metacenter is smaller than i/v when the free surface of fluid touch the top or the bottom of tank. The reasonable method to calculate the height of tank metacenter is presented in this paper and prepared in FORTRAN program by FUNCTION EFFRES. The approximate formula was also developed and given by $g_m=(1+\frac{2}{1}tan^2\theta)[1-EXP\{-12(\frac{\alpha(1-\alpha)k}{tan\theta})^{1.25}\}]\frac{i}{v}$ where $g_m$ is the distance from the centroid of fluid to the tank metacenter, $\theta$ is inclined angle of ship, $\alpha$ is the ratio of filled volume to tank capacity and k is the ratio of the depth to the width of tank. The values calculated by the approximate formula given in this paper were compared with the exact values from the computer program and proved out to be sufficiently precise for practical use.
This study investigates two-phase cooling system of close-loop by using FC-72 and PCM(Phase change material). The cooling system consists of evaporator, cold plate, micro pump, and condenser. The heat input on the performance of evaporator is appreciated by visualizing the boiling on the evaporator. The heat performance of cooling system is investigated to determine the effects of volume fill ratio change at working fluid, pump flow rate change, and volume fill ratio change at PCM in cold plate. Experimental results show the ideal condition when the volume ratio of working fluid, the pump flowing, and the volume ratio of PCM are 60%, 6ml/min, and 60% respectively.
