  • Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are increasingly being used as an alternative or supplement to the gamma spectrometric method in determining the full energy peak efficiency (FEPE) necessary for radionuclide identification and quantification. The MC method is more advantageous than the experimental method in terms of both cost and time. Experimental calibration with standard sources is difficult, especially for specimens with unusually shaped geometries. However, with MC, efficiency values can be obtained by modeling the geometry as desired without using any calibration source. Modeling the detector with the correct parameters is critical in the MC method. These parameters given to the user by the manufacturer are especially the dimensions of the crystal and its front edge, the thickness of the dead layer, dimensions, and materials of the detector components. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the front edge geometry of the detector crystal on efficiency, so the effect of rounded and sharp modeled front edges on the FEPE was investigated for <300 keV with three different HPGe detectors in point and volume source geometries using PHITS MC code. All results showed that the crystal should be modeled as a rounded edge, especially for gamma-ray energies below 100 keV.

  • Nicotine is the main component of environmental tobacco smoke, and its presence in indoor air is widely used as a secondhand-smoke indicator. Environmental tobacco smoke is a major source of indoor air pollution, but sufficient investigation of the uncertainty of its measurement, which mirrors the reliability of nicotine measurement, has not been performed. We calculated the uncertainty of measurement of indoor air nicotine concentration at low, medium, and high concentrations of 11.3798, 10.1977, $98.3768{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively, and we employed the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurements (GUM), proposed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The factors considered in determining the uncertainty were uncertainty of the calibration curve (calibration curve and repeated measurements), desorption efficiency, extraction volume, and sampling airflow (accuracy and acceptable limits of flowmeter). The measurement uncertainty was highest at low concentrations; the expanded measurement uncertainty is $0.9435{\mu}g/m^3$ and is represented as a relative uncertainty of 63.38%. At medium and high (concentrations, the relative uncertainty was 13.1% and 9.1%, respectively. The uncertainty of the calibration curve was largest for low indoor nicotine concentrations. To increase reliability of measurement in assessing the effect of secondhand smoke, measures such as increasing the sample injection rate ($1{\mu}L$ or more), increasing sampling volume to increase collected nicotine, and using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or GC/MS/MS, which has a lower quantitation threshold, rather than gas chromatography with nitrogen phosphorous detector, should be considered.

  • In this paper, the multi-camera calibration algorithm for optical motion capture system is proposed. This algorithm performs 1st camera calibration using DLT(Direct linear transformation} method and 3-axis calibration frame with 7 optical markers. And 2nd calibration is performed by waving with a wand of known length(so called wand dance} throughout desired calibration volume. In the 1st camera calibration, it is obtained not only camera parameter but also radial lens distortion parameters. These parameters are used initial solution for optimization in the 2nd camera calibration. In the 2nd camera calibration, the optimization is performed. The objective function is to minimize the difference of distance between real markers and reconstructed markers. For verification of the proposed algorithm, re-projection errors are calculated and the distance among markers in the 3-axis frame and in the wand calculated. And then it compares the proposed algorithm with commercial motion capture system. In the 3D reconstruction error of 3-axis frame, average error presents 1.7042mm(commercial system) and 0.8765mm(proposed algorithm). Average error reduces to 51.4 percent in commercial system. In the distance between markers in the wand, the average error shows 1.8897mm in the commercial system and 2.0183mm in the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we discussed about the volume monitoring system of a landfill facility. We proposed the waste volume calculation method using the point cloud of the surface of three dimensional object by measurement of the point cloud by the three dimensional scanner, which is based upon the robot technique. This computes not only the quantity of waste volume for continuos monitoring but also it helps not only to predict the evaluation factor of the usable age of a landfill. facility. Furthermore, the measuring system of waste volume was applied to the landfill facility in Ansung city.

  • For the construction of safe and clear urban environment, it is necessary that we identify the rubbish waste volume and we know the accuracy volume. In this paper, we developed the algorithm which computes the waste volume using the stereo camera for enhancing the environment of waste repository. Using the stereo vision camera, we first computed the distortion parameters of stereo camera and then we obtained the points cloud of the object surface by measuring the target object. Regarding the points cloud as the input of the volume calculation algorithm, we obtained the waste volume of the target object. For this purpose, we suggested two volume calculation algorithm based on the uniform meshing method. The difference between the measured volume such as today's one and yesterday's one gives the reposit of waste volume. Using this approach, we can get the change of the waste volume repository by reading the volume reports weekly, monthly and yearly, so we can get quantitative statistics report of waste volume.

  • We investigate the ultrasonic gas flow meter for the measurement of gas volume quantity, which passing through pipe, using the transit time difference method. We have designed a receiving system of an ultrasonic signal and hardware system of a flow meter Also, we have designed an experimental system for the characteristic test and calibration of a gas flow meter system. We have developed an ultrasonic gas flow meter, which has a measurement uncertainty within $\pm$ 1.7 %. For the test, we have compared our system with a difference pressure type flow meter for a few months in the real field. Through the test, we have confirmed that our system have a good reliability and durability. Also, we have confirmed that our system follows very well the variation of gas volume quantity, which was measured by a difference pressure type flow meter.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the calibration method for temperature effects to improve the accuracy of the Weigh-In-Motion(WIM) system for collecting long-term truck weight data. WIM system was installed at a location where the truck traffic volume is high and weight data has been collected from January 2010. In this study, as a calibration measure, the first axle weight of Truck Type 10, the semi tractor-trailer is used based on the fact that the first axle weight is relatively constant, independent of the cargo weight. From this fact, calibration equations are developed from the relationship between the axle weight and the temperature(daily mean, maximum and minimum). Analysis on calibrated weight data shows adequacy of the proposed calibration method. Results of this study can be used to improve the accuracy of the WIM system and to carry out more rational design of pavement and bridge structures.

  • AnnAGNPS model was applied to a catchment mainly occupied with bushland for modeling non-point source pollution. Since the single event model cannot handle events longer than 24 hours duration, the event-based calibration was carried out using the continuous mode. As event flows affect sediment and nutrient generation and transport, the calibration of the model was performed in three steps: Hydrologic, Sediment and Nutrient calibrations. The results from hydrologic calibration for the catchment indicate a good prediction of the model with average ARE(Absolute Relative Error) of $24.6\%$ fur the runoff volume and $12\%$ for the peak flow. For the sediment calibration, the average ARE was $198.8\%$ indicating acceptable model performance for the sediment prediction. The predicted TN(Total Nitrogen) and TP(Total Phosphorus) were also found to be acceptable as the average ARE for TN and TP were $175.5\%\;and\;126.5\%$, respectively. The AnnAGNPS model was therefore approved to be appropriate to model non-point source pollution in bushland catchments. In general, the model was likely to result in underestimation for the larger events and overestimation fur the smaller events for the water quality predictions. It was also observed that the large errors in the hydrologic prediction also produced high errors in sediment and nutrient prediction. This was probably due to error propagation in which the error in the hydrologic prediction influenced the generation of error in the water quality prediction. Accurate hydrologic calibration should be hence obtained for a reliable water quality prediction.

  • Water content of subgrade soil in water supply systems has a large effect on performance. Many researchers lately make use of time-domain reflectometry (TDR) probes to measure the soil water content of subgrade soil from monitoring. The laboratory calibration test of TDR probe should be performed with soil field, because TDR probe can cause an error by type, gradation, density, and temperature of soil. This study shows the laboratory calibration test using TDR CS616, TDR-P3, TDR-T3. The calibration equations of TDR were then proposed. It was confirmed from the study that the data of TDR probe monitored in field could be used to estimate the freezing, unfrozen water content, and matric suction of soil.
