Lactic acid bacterial inoculant effects on the vitamin content of alfalfa and Chinese leymus silage

  • Objective: Information regarding the vitamin content of silage is limited. This study investigated the changes in the vitamin content of alfalfa and Chinese leymus silages with or without a lactic acid bacterial inoculant. Methods: Alfalfa at the early flowering stage and Chinese leymus at the full-bloom stage were harvested. The treatments for each forage type were control (deionized water only) and $1{\times}10^6$ colony-forming units Lactobacillus plantarum (LP)/g fresh matter. After 45 days of ensiling, all silages were sampled for evaluating the vitamin content, fermentation quality and chemical composition. Results: The LP inoculant decreased the pH value and ammonia nitrogen content of the alfalfa and Chinese leymus silages and significantly (p<0.05) increased the lactic acid, acetic acid concentrations and Flieg's points. Prior to ensiling, the levels of five B-group vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, and pyridoxine) and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol in alfalfa were significantly (p<0.01) higher than those in Chinese leymus. Ensiling decreased the levels of the five B-group vitamins in both alfalfa and Chinese leymus while increasing the ${\alpha}$-tocopherol content of Chinese leymus. The thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid levels in the LP-treated silage were significantly (p<0.05) lower than those in the untreated silage for the alfalfa and Chinese leymus. The ${\alpha}$-tocopherol content in the LP-treated alfalfa silage was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that in the untreated alfalfa silage. There was no significant (p>0.05) difference in pyridoxine content between the untreated and LP-treated silages for both forages. Conclusion: With or without LP inoculation, the levels of the five B-group vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, and pyridoxine) in alfalfa and Chinese leymus decreased after 45 days of ensiling, while the ${\alpha}$-tocopherol content of Chinese leymus increased. The LP inoculant improved the fermentation quality of both the alfalfa and Chinese leymus silages but increased the thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid loss in the two forages after fermentation.

  • The results of re-examination for the isolates D-28, D-28a from Kimchi and 88-3 from laver are summarized as follows: 1). All these isolates were proved to be Gram positive, catalase positive and spore-forming. 2). While these strains were not consistent with Bacillus megaterium group with respect to Voges-Proskauer reaction and methyl red test, their cultural characteristics were well consistent with this group. 3). These isolates showed the similar suger-fermentability as B. megaterium group with a slight difference. 4). It is proved that, according to the forgoing results and vitamin $B_{12}$ producibility, the isolate 88-3 is identical with B. megaterium NRRL-B 938 and D-28, D-28a, with B. megaterium 425-1 and 425-2, respectively.

경기지역의 노인흡연자의 비흡연자의 식습관 및 영양소 섭취량의 차이에 관한 연구 (Dietary Differences in Smokes and Nonsmokers from Free Living Elderly in Kyunggi Province)

  • The aim of this investigation was to assess the difference of health behaviors, dietary patterns and nutrient intakes between smokers and nonsmoker from 435 free living elderly in Kyunggi province. The study subjects were interviewed to collect general characteristics and health behaviors such as smoking, exercise, alcohol consumption, and food habits by questionnaires and nutrient intakes by a 24-hour recall, and weight, height, waist, hip, and blood pressure were measured. The percentages of smoker were 52.3% in males and 12.1% in females. Current smokers were fond of alcohol, salty or hot food, tended to have meals irregularly and insufficient sleep, and were inactive lifestyle compared to nonsmokers. Smokers consumed fewer servings of vegetables, fruits, and beans and their products. Women who smoked consumed less energy, carbohydrates, and vitamin E than nonsmokers, and their nutrient adequacy ratio of protein, iron, phosphate, niacin, vitamin B1, and vitamin C were significantly lower than nonsmokers. There were no differences of nutrient intakes and nutrient adequacy ratio between smokers and nonsmokers in male subjects. In conclusion, elderly smokers tended to have less healthy life style, food habit, and dietary nutrient intakes which may influence the deleterious effects of smoke components on cancer and coronary heart disease risk, thus health education program should include nutrition education as well as smoking cessation.

Vitamins and minerals for women: recent programs and intervention trials

  • Women's nutrition has received little attention in nutrition programming, even though clinical trials and intervention trials have suggested that dietary improvement or supplementation with several nutrients may improve their health, especially in low-income settings, the main focus of this paper. Most attention so far has focused on how improvements in maternal nutrition can improve health outcomes for infants and young children. Adequate vitamin D and calcium nutrition throughout life may reduce the risk of osteoporosis, and calcium supplementation during pregnancy may reduce preeclampsia and low birth weight. To reduce neural tube defects, additional folic acid and possibly vitamin $B_{12}$ need to be provided to non-deficient women before they know they are pregnant. This is best achieved by fortifying a staple food. It is unclear whether maternal vitamin A supplementation will lead to improved health outcomes for mother or child. Iron, iodine and zinc supplementation are widely needed for deficient women. Multimicronutrient supplementation (MMS) in place of the more common iron-folate supplements given in pregnancy in low-income countries may slightly increase birth weight, but its impact on neonatal mortality and other outcomes is unclear. More sustainable alternative approaches deserve greater research attention.

  • Parasitological and biochemical studies for 82 heads (12.2%) showing sterility syndrom out of 672 heads of Korean native cattle were undertaken by analysis of blood values for their contents and examination of their vaginal swabs for Tritrichomonas foetus 1. Tritrichomonas infection of Korean cattle revealed 7 positive cases (8.54%) out of 82 infertile heads. 2. Contents of their serum protean, carotenoid, vitamin A and phosphorus were determined in summer and winter season and the following results were obtained. a) In summer season, average blood value of 30 cattle showing sterility syndrom were determined as protein 7.52g/100ml, carotenoid 165.1g/100ml, vitamin A 173.9 IU/100ml and phosphorus 7.48mg/100ml, respectively. b) In winter. season, average blood value of 52 cattle showing sterility syndrom were determined as protein 7.76g/100ml, carotenoid 413.3g/100ml, vitamin A 174,3 IU/100ml and phosphorus 7.54mg/100ml, respectively.

충북지역 일부 여자대학생들의 건강관련행동과 식행동 및 그에 따른 영양섭취수준 비교 (Dietary Behavior, Health Related Behavior and Nutrient Intake of Female College Students in Chungbuk Area)

  • This study was intended to investigate dietary behavior, health related behavior and the effects of nutrient intake of female college students. Dietary behavior, health related behavior and the perception of the body conditions were surveyed with anonymous questionnaires, and 24hrs recall method for nutrient intake was obtained from 161 female college students in Chungbuk area. The mean height and weight of the subjects were $161.4{\pm}5.0$cm and $53.8{\pm}7.4 $kg, respectively. The dietary behavior of female college students was generally inadequate. More specifically, irregularity of meals, indifference of dietary balance, and skipping breakfast, showing $4.77{\pm}2.20$for dietary behavior score, $11.76{\pm}3.89$ for DVS and $3.58{\pm}0.82$ for DDS, respectively. It was found that almost 63% of subjects did not anything for health care and the frequency of exercise of subjects was low. The perception of body conditions of the subjects seemed to be generally positive. However, satisfaction levels on body shape was very negative showing that only 12.4% of subjects answered as 'very satisfied' and 'satisfied'. When nutrient intake of the female college students was compared with Dietary Reference Intake for Korean, folate(45%), potassium(55%), vitamin C(59%), Ca(72%), fiber(72%), Fe(79%) and energy(80%) were found to be insufficient. But protein(138%), P(122%) and Na(179%) were found to be oversupplied. The nutrient intake of fiber, plant Ca, vitamin A, ${\beta}$-carotene, vitamin B6, vitamin C, folate and vitamin E were significantly higher, and those of Fe, Zn and protein were a little high in the high score group of dietary behavior. Also Food group intake, DDS and DVS were higher in the high score group of dietary behavior.

발효숙성온도를 달리한 갓 김치의 저장중 이화학적 특성 변화 (Effect of Fermentation Temperature on the Physicochemical Properties of Mustard Leaf(Brassica juncea) Kimchi during Various Storage Days)

  • 발효숙성 온도를 달리한 돌산 갓 김치의 저장 중 pH, 산도, 염도, 색도, 비타민 C 등의 이화학적 특성을 알아 보았다. 발효숙성 방법으로는 $4^{\circ}C(A),\;20^{\circ}C(B),\;20^{\circ}C$에서 12시간 숙성시킨 후 $4^{\circ}C$에 저장하는 방법(C), $20^{\circ}C$에서 36시간 숙성시킨 후 $4^{\circ}C$에 저장하는 방법(D)으로 하였다. 돌산 갓 김치 담금 직후의 pH는 5.24이었고, $20^{\circ}C$에서 12시간과 36시간 숙성시킨 후 $4^{\circ}C$에 저장된 C, D군에서 각각 pH 5.13, pH 5.10으로 A군 보다 모두 낮았으며 B군에서는 급속하게 변화하였다. 갓 김치의 적숙기라 할 수 있는 pH 4.6~4.8이 되는 시기는 A군이발효 78~96일, B군은 6~9일, 그리고 C, D군은 모두 68~88일로 같게 나타났다. 총산 함량에 있어서는 담금 직후 0.5%이었고, C, D군은 모두 0.6%으로 A군의 0.5%보다 모두 높게 나타났다. 또한 pH 4.6~4.8이 되는 시기의 총산 함량에 있어서 A군은 0.75~0.82%, B군은 0.65~0.70%, C군은 0.80~0.81%, D군 0.82~0.84%이었다. 갓 김치의 염도는 $20^{\circ}C$인 B군에서 증가폭이 컸고, 다음으로 D > A > C 순으로 나타났다. 도는 발효가 진행됨에 따라 L, a값은 증가했다가 다시 감소하였고 b값은 증가하였다. 특히 B군에서 L값이 적숙기에 증가하여 밝아지는 현상을 나타내었으나, 최종 김치의 색은 C > D > A > B 순으로 좋게 나타났다. 발효숙성일수가 경과함에 따라 총 비타민 C 함량은 9.0~14.0mg%까지 감소하였으며 적숙기에 가서 22.0mg%로 다소 증가 하다가 후기에 서서히 감소하였다. A군은 완만한 감소(25~22 %)를 보인 반면 B군은 다소 감소폭(25~7.0mg%)이 컸다. 발효 후기의 총 비타민 C 보유량에는 A > D > C > B 순으로 높게 나타났다.

Recovery of inferior alveolar nerve injury after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO): a retrospective study

  • Background: Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) is the most widely used mandibular surgical technique in orthognathic surgery and is easy to relocate the distal segments, accelerating bone repair by the large surface of bone contact. However, it can cause neurosensory dysfunction (NSD) or sensory loss by injury of the inferior alveolar nerve. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate NSD after BSSRO and modifiers at NSD recovery. Methods: In this study, NSD characteristics after BSSRO from 2009 to 2014 at the Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital were evaluated. The pattern of sensory recovery over time was also evaluated based on factors such as field of sensory dysfunction, surgical procedure, presence of pre-operative facial asymmetry, and postoperative medications. Results: Most of the patients had shown NSD immediately after orthognathic surgery. Among the 1192 sides of 596 patients, NSD was observed in 953 sides and 544 patients. Sexual predilection was shown in males (p value = 0.0062). In the asymmetric group of 132 patients, NSD was observed in 128 patients (96.97 %). In the symmetric group of 464 patients, NSD was observed in 416 patients (89.45 %); on the other hand, NSD was observed significantly higher in the asymmetric group (p = 0.025). NSD-associated factors were analyzed, and vitamin B12 may be beneficial for NSD recovery. Conclusions: There was a difference between the symmetric group and the asymmetric group in NSD recovery. Vitamin B12 can be regarded as an effective method to nerve recovery. However, a further prospective study is needed.

키토산과 폴리에틸렌글리콜 모노메타크릴레이트의 그라프트중합과 약물(Vitamin B12)방출에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Graft Polymerization of Polyethyleneglycol Monomethacrylate onto Chitosan and Drug(Vitamin B12) Permeation Behavior)

  • 생체적합성이 좋은 천연고분자인 chitosan에 수용성의 비닐계 단량체인 polyethyleneglycol monomethacrylate series를 그라프트중합시켜 그 반응조건과 물성을 검토하였다. 그라프트중합은 ethylene oxide 부가몰수에 따라 PE-90, PE-200, PE-350의 세 가지 단량체에 ceric ammonium nitrate(CAN)를 개시제로 사용하였으며, 중합에서 개시제의 농도, 단량체의 농도, 반응온도, 반응시간이 총전환율, 그라프트율, 그라프트효율에 미치는 영향을 조사하여 최적조건을 규명하였다. 반응은 개시제농도 $4{\sim}5{\times}10^{-3}M$, 단량체농도 0.5~0.6M, 반응시간 2~3시간, 반응온도 $40^{\circ}C$에서 최고의 그라프트율과 총전환율을 나타냈다. 합성한 공중합체의 열적 성질, 용해성 및 점성도를 검토한 결과 고농도의 개시제를 사용하면 그라프트 중합체는 chitosan의 특성을 급격히 감소시켰다. 고유점성도의 경우, chitosan-g-PE-90이 2.81dl/g, chitosan-g-PE-200이 3.01dl/g, chitosan-g-PE-350이 4.93d1/g으로 증가하는 경향이 나타났다. 공중합체를 막으로 성형하여 그라프트율과 polyethyleneglycol monomethacrylates의 ethylene oxide 부가몰수에 따른 공중합체의 기계적 물성과 함수율을 측정하였다. 가교화 공중합체막은 150분 이내에 함수율이 평형에 이르렀다. 공중합체의 물성은 그라프트율과 ethylene oxide 부가몰수의 영향을 받았으며 chitosan의 기계적 물성과 함수율이 공중합체에서 증가되었음을 확인하였으며 그라프트율이 증가함에 따라 vitamin $B_{12}$의 투과량도 증가하였다.

전라도 구곡순담 장수벨트지역에 거주하는 중노년층의 체격지수와 영양소 섭취상태 (Anthropometric Index and Nutrient Intake in Korean Aged 50 Plus Years Living in Kugoksoondam Longevity-belt Region in Korea)

  • As the older adult period $({\geq}65y)$ is increasing, it is needed to investigate the trend of aging-dependent anthropomeric index and nutrient intake, and establish the more specific dietary guide for the different stages of aging period. To find the difference in nutrient intake among the Koreans aged 50-64, 65-74 and 75 years and older, and also any characteristics of dwellers in longevity area, we recruited 1,083 subjects (385 male and 698 female) aged 50-95 years (mean age, 71.3 yrs) living in Kugoksoondam area (Kurye, Goksung, Soonchang and Damyang counties), known as a longevity-belt region in Jeonlaprovince, Korea. We measured some anthropometric index and collected 2 day-dietary record. Nutrient intakes were analyzed by using DW24 program. The mean height and weight of subjects aged 75 years and older were lower than Korean national reference. BMI and obesity $({\geq}25kg/m^2)$ prevalence were significantly decreasing with aging. Underweight $(BMI<18.5kg/m^2)$ prevalence was also increasing with aging, especially in males, and it was slightly higher than national average, but similar to that in some other rural area. Obesity prevalence of male subjects was lower compared to national prevalence, but abdominal obesity prevalence $(waist{\geq}80cm)$ was very high in females (about 89%). In both genders, the average proportional contribution of carbohydrate, protein and fat to energy intake was not different between 65-74 years and 75 years and older. On overall, nutrient intake and quality of diet of females were inferior to those of males so that many of females aged 75 years and older assumed to be at risk of malnourished status. Fiber, folate and vitamin E intakes were substantially higher compared to those in 2007 KNHNES and other some studies in rural area. While almost nutrient %EAR was significantly decreased with aging in females, there was no significant difference in %EAR for protein, vitamin A, $B_1$, $B_6$, $B_{12}$, niacin, Ca and Zn between 65-74 years and 75 years and older in males. Vitamin $B_2$ for male aged 50-64 years, vitamin $B_2$ and Ca for male aged 65 years and over and female aged 50-74 years, and vitamin $B_2$, vitamin C, Ca and folate intake for female aged 75 years and older were assessed to be at risk to undernutrition based on the prevalence of intake below EAR. MAR of 13 nutrients and the number of nutrients consuming below EAR were significantly decreasing with aging in both genders, however, the number of nutrients of INQ < 1 and the average mini-nutritional assessment score were not significantly different between 65-74 years and 75 years and older. Taken together, decreasing tendency of nutrients intake and the quality of diet with aging was more evident in females than in males, and it is unique that our subjects consumed substantially higher fiber, folate and vitamin E compared to not only urban but also some other rural areas.
