The Design Recommendations based on the Analysis of Physical Environmental Elements in the Learning Spaces for the Visually Impaired Students (맹학교 학습공간의 물리적 환경 요소 분석을 통한 개선방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to make interior environment which can support the education effectively through acceptance of the requirements of users about the environmental factors of learning spaces for the visually impaired students. For them, researcher investigated the literature cited and did the field survey. And also, this researcher analyzed user's satisfaction extent for structure, design, and technical environment factors by the evaluation elements. On the basis of the result of analysis, Two rooms which had big problems for physical environment were selected. And then the design recommendations focusing on environmental factors - circulation, furniture arrangement, colour, lighting etc. - were proposed by this researcher on the basis of space user's requriement.

A Qualitative Study on the Experience of Visually Impaired Researchers in the Acquisition and Use of Scholarly Contents (시각장애 연구자의 학술정보 획득 및 활용 경험에 관한 질적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to describe the experience of visually impaired academic researchers' use of scholarly contents and to explore intrinsic nature of the experience. In-depth interview was conducted with a total number of twelve visually impaired academic researchers and the data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological research method. A total of 107 significant statements were extracted, divided into 44 themes and 12 theme clusters. The statements were then classified into four categories. The 'scholarly contents acquisition and use' category has to do with difficulties that these experience when negotiating with internet sites with poor web accessibility and full-text availability. The 'changes in perception and emotions' category deals with transitions in perception and mood experienced by visually impaired academic researchers' over time. The 'relationships with support personnel' category includes issues related with the difficulty of securing support person, support person's inadequate level of competence, and establishing/sustaining personal relationships. Finally, the 'improvement requirements' category includes issues that these researchers want resolved with regard to contents acquisition and use.

A Study on the Influential Factors on the Organizational Commitment of Employees Working in Libraries for the Visually Impaired (시각장애인도서관 직원들의 조직몰입에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • The study has a purpose of understanding the factors that affect the oranizational commitment of the employees working in the libraries for visually impaired. To do this, the study chose personal background, emotional labor, role, job characteristics, organizational culture and organizational justice and attempted to find out how these factors affect the oranizational commitment. As a research method, mixed study method was used where quantitative analysis was complemented by qualitative analysis. For quantitative analysis, statistical analysis was conducted using the retrieved questionnaires. For qualitative analysis, the researcher had a one-on-one talk with the experts and employees who want to participate using an interview note was recomposed based on the survey responses. In the study results, emotional labor, job characteristics, organizational culture and organizational justice was proven to have influence on job engagement. To improve the job engagement, autonomy should be guaranteed by minimizing the organizational intervention to the assigned works and expanding the discretionary power. Furthermore, intensive management of the employees' emotional labor and fair process regarding the work performance is highly important.

Phenomenological Research on the Meaning of Visually-impaired Undergraduate Freshmen's University Entrance and their School Life Experiences: At a crossroads before taking a leave of absence (1학년 시각장애대학생의 대학진학의 의미와 학교생활 경험에 관한 현상학 연구 : 휴학의 기로에서)

  • The subjects of this study are three visually-impaired undergraduates currently considering if they should take a leave of absence after finishing the first year in S University located in Busan City. From March to July, 2018, this researcher explored the meaning of their university entrance and the essential meaning and structure of their school life experiences by using Giorgi's phenomenological methodology. According to the results, this author drew 32 meaningful statements and also 10 main themes, "the excitement of campus life and the name of being an undergraduate", "parents' suggestion", "something other than being a massager", "Is it a place that anyone can enter? Or, is it a special place?", "loneliness within the public", "Everything is an obstacle.", "It's not giving up, but still I am in a vague moment.", "the beginning of another conflict", and "studying in a university is not for the present but for the future". They were categorized into being a university student and the meaning of it (category1), adaptation to university life and reality (category 2), and one year after the entrance: the meaning of being a university student (category 3). Based on the above results, this author intends to provide foundational material about what universities can do for visually-impaired students to adapt to university life in the initial steps properly.

A Case Study on the Visually Impaired Secondary Students' Conception of the Changes of State of Water (시각장애 중고등학생의 물의 상태변화 개념에 대한 사례 연구)

  • In this study, visually impaired secondary students' conception of "changes of state of water" was explored. Science inquiry activity for students with visual impairments was implemented to 16 middle school students and 15 high school students from school for the blind. 14 of them were totally blind, 13 had low vision and the others were not identified. Inquiry activities were conducted by communicating with the researcher while students were individually exploring the molecular models of water and ice developed for the study. After the exploration, students were asked to explain the concept of changes of state of water with the model they explored. Opinion on the need and the usability of this kind of tactile model was also asked to them. All conversations were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. As a result, students with visual impairments answered exactly about the materials used for the model and their numbers. However, they didn't know what the model stood for. They had experiences of learning molecule of water and changes of state of water, but it was a phenomenon and superficial understanding. Students got to understand the molecular structures of water and ice, and had a positive perception on the need and the usability of the model. Based on these results, educational implications were discussed.
