A Destructive Method in the Connection of the Algorithm and Design in the Digital media - Centered on the Rapid Prototyping Systems of Product Design - (디지털미디어 환경(環境)에서 디자인 특성(特性)에 관한 연구(硏究) - 실내제품(室內製品) 디자인을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this thesis is to propose a new concept of design of the 21st century, on the basis of the study on the general signification of the structures and the signs of industrial product design, by examining the difference between modern and post-modern design, which is expected to lead the users to different design practice and interpretation of it. The starting point of this study is the different styles and patterns of 'Gestalt' in the post-modern design of the late 20th century from modern design - the factor of determination in industrial product design. That is to say, unlike functional and rational styles of modern product design, the late 20th century is based upon the pluralism characterized by complexity, synthetic and decorativeness. So far, most of the previous studies on design seem to have excluded visual aspects and usability, focused only on effective communication of design phenomena. These partial studies on design, blinded by phenomenal aspects, have resulted in failure to discover a principle of fundamental system. However, design varies according to the times; and the transformation of design is reflected in Design Pragnanz to constitute a new text of design. Therefore, it can be argued that Design Pragnanz serves as an essential factor under influence of the significance of text. In this thesis, therefore, I delve into analysis of the 20th century product design, in the light of Gestalt theory and Design Pragnanz, which have been functioning as the principle of the past design. For this study, I attempted to discover the fundamental elements in modern and post-modern designs, and to examine the formal structure of product design, the users' aesthetic preference and its semantics, from the integrative viewpoint. Also, with reference to history and theory of design my emphasis is more on fundamental visual phenomena than on structural analysis or process of visualization in product design, in order to examine the formal properties of modern and post-modern designs. Firstly, In Chapter 1, 'Issues and Background of the Study', I investigated the Gestalt theory and Design Pragnanz, on the premise of formal distinction between modern and post-modern designs. These theories are founded upon the discussion on visual perception of Gestalt in Germany in 1910's, in pursuit of the principle of perception centered around visual perception of human beings. In Chapter 2, I dealt with functionalism of modern design, as an advance preparation for the further study on the product design of the late 20th century. First of all, in Chapter 2-1, I examined the tendency of modern design focused on functionalism, which can be exemplified by the famous statement 'Form follows function'. Excluding all unessential elements in design - for example, decoration, this tendency has attained the position of the international style based on the spirit of Bauhause - universality and regularity - in search of geometric order, standardization and rationalization. In Chapter 2-2, I investigated the anthropological viewpoint that modern design started representing culture in a symbolic way including overall aspects of the society - politics, economics and ethics, and its criticism on functionalist design that aesthetic value is missing in exchange of excessive simplicity in style. Moreover, I examined the pluralist phenomena in post-modern design such as kitsch, eclecticism, reactionism, hi-tech and digital design, breaking away from functionalist purism of modern design. In Chapter 3, I analyzed Gestalt Pragnanz in design in a practical way, against the background of design trends. To begin with, I selected mass product design among those for the 20th century products as a target of analysis, highlighting representative styles in each category of the products. For this analysis, I adopted the theory of J. M Lehnhardt, who gradated in percentage the aesthetic and semantic levels of Pragnantz in design expression, and that of J. K. Grutter, who expressed it in a formula of M = O : C. I also employed eight units of dichotomies, according to the G. D. Birkhoff's aesthetic criteria, for the purpose of scientific classification of the degree of order and complexity in design; and I analyzed phenomenal aspects of design form represented in each unit. For Chapter 4, I executed a questionnaire about semiological phenomena of Design Pragnanz with 28 units of antonymous adjectives, based upon the research in the previous chapter. Then, I analyzed the process of signification of Design Pragnanz, founded on this research. Furthermore, the interpretation of the analysis served as an explanation to preference, through systematic analysis of Gestalt and Design Pragnanz in product design of the late 20th century. In Chapter 5, I determined the position of Design Pragnanz by integrating the analyses of Gestalt and Pragnanz in modern and post-modern designs In this process, 1 revealed the difference of each Design Pragnanz in formal respect, in order to suggest a vision of the future as a result, which will provide systemic and structural stimulation to current design.

  • The existential space concept which introduced the sense of place that began emerging recently together with the change of space concept results from people's fundamental existential humane aspect as the subject of perceptive experience. The tendencies of enlargement layering and diversification which we can see in contemporary architecture imply the possibility that elements of urban image can be incorporated into interior design. This study utilizes Kevin Lynch's theory which tries to relate environment to existential space. In this study we re-analyze and apply Lynch's $\ulcorner$the Theory of Urban Image$\lrcorner$to interior space and using the conclusion from a case study examine the applicability of the theory about visual perception to interior design. This study considers a new method of analysis to perceive and grasp interior space through the understanding of the cognitive map and image concept.

Visual Attention Detection By Adaptive Non-Local Filter

  • Regarding global and local factors of a set of features, a given single image or multiple images is a common approach in image processing. This paper introduces an application of an adaptive version of non-local filter whose original version searches non-local similarity for removing noise. Since most images involve texture partner in both foreground and background, extraction of signified regions with texture is a challenging task. Aiming to the detection of visual attention regions for images with texture, we present the contrast analysis of image patches located in a whole image but not nearby with assistance of the adaptive filter for estimation of non-local divergence. The method allows extraction of signified regions with texture of images of wild life. Experimental results for a benchmark demonstrate the ability of the proposed method to deal with the mentioned challenge.

  • This study is about the application of visual structure and presentation of film as one of new methods for design of sequential landscape. The primary objective of the study is to present the basis of applicable and reasonable D니. In applying components of film to DSL, if it is compared with sequential landscape, the film is collection of shots while sequential landscape is accumulation of sceneries. Film and sequential landscape give us a whole meaning different from the meaning itself of a shot or scenery in its experience. The study build a tentative technique of DSL which has the following stages : 1) Goal setting and making out a scenario 2) Analysis and investigation 3) Selection process of definite form 4) Drawing up conti., sketch and notes, It is expected that the technique presented in this study could be a basis for further study of DSL.

  • In the experiment carried out on 20 college students, recorded were frontal, temporal and occipital EEG, skin conductance response, skin conductance level, heart rate and respiration rate during listening to two music fragments with different affective valences and white noise administered immediately after negative visual stimulation. Analysis of physiological patterns observed during the experiment suggests that affective auditory stimulation with music is able to selectively modulate autonomic and cortical activity evoked by preceding aversive visual stimulation and to restore initial baseline levels. On other hand, physiological responses to white noise, which does not possess emotion-eliciting capabilities, evokes response typical for orienting reaction after the onset of a stimulus and is rapidly followed by habituation. Observed responses to white noise were similar to those specific to attention only and had no evidence for any emotion-related processes. Interpretation of the obtained data is considered in terms of the role of emotional and orienting significance of stimuli, dependence of effects on the background physiological activation level and time courses of attention and emotion processes. Physiological parameters are summarized with regard to their potential utility in differentiation of psychological processes induced by auditory stimuli.

  • Due to rise in a more sophisticated consumer and free distribution of foreign goods domestic department stores have been confronted with the need to change marketing strategy. The VMD strategy has become increasingly important as the means in reaching the contemporary consumer who has been sensitized to a visual style of marketing strategy. The use of VMD organizational elements have enabled us to create basic planning data that more accurately reflect our current marketplace trends,. The positive influence and supporting role of visual merchandiser is needed more than ever and will be an important part of future profit and customer satisfaction regardless of whether the customer is driven from image buying values and product-quality issues.

  • For the success of mobile messenger emoticons, it is important to grab the attentions of users or consumers and identify the influence factors that can satisfy empathy and emotional satisfaction. In this study, first, subjective evaluation of the mobile messenger emoticons of the subjects was examined through a preliminary survey, and then Eye-tracking experiments were conducted to identify the influence factors that can attention of the subject's eyes in the emoticons. The study revealed that emoticons such as Ompangi and Onaeui yeosin highlighting their characters mainly focus on characters(face). Secondly, Gyuiyomjueui and Handprinting emoticons focused on Text. Contrary to earlier studies, such results showed that people are presumed to focus on characteristic elements such as size, form, color and location of visually exposed elements rather than primarily having a keen interest in characters.

  • Double skin façade is known that several features affected the building energy and daylighting performance. That is why the envelope is able to consist of all architectural materials such as glass, aluminum, wood and insulation for vision of residents and workers in buildings. Its specifications is very diverse according to the building designers and building owners. In recent times, visual environment became a major focus and resulted in the development of cutting edge engineering of diverse glazing systems and shading devices by growing interests of friendly environment. Thus this research has evaluated the fluctuations of interior lighting and atmospheric conditions based on double skin facade systems. Especially in terms of daylighting environment as dependent on solar variations, this research provides quantitative analysis of interior lighting conditions and how it affects the living conditions as well as improve the design of interior spaces.

Yarn evenness tests are used to obtain statistical data about yarn properties, such as CV%, which is useful in comparing several sets of similar data that differ in mean value but may have some commonality in relative variation. Although this statistical data is helpful in determining relative yarn Quality, accurate predictions of how the yarn will appear in fabric form are still difficult to obtain. As an promising alterative, wavelet analysis has been employed to localize yam defect so as to predict the visual qualifies of the fabrics.
