  • Advances of digital device technology such as digital cameras, smart phones and tablets, provide convenience way for people to take pictures during his/her life. Photo data is being spread rapidly throughout the social network, causing the excessive amount of data available on the internet. Photo retrieval is categorized into three types, which are: keyword-based search, example-based search, visualize query-based search. The commonly used multimedia search methods which are implemented on Smart TV are adapting the previous methods that were optimized for PC environment. That causes some features of the method becoming irrelevant to be implemented on Smart TV. This paper proposes a novel Visual Query-based Photo Retrieval Method in Smart TV Environment using a motion sensing input device known as Kinect Sensor. We detected hand gestures using kinect sensor and used the information to mimic the control function of a mouse. The average precision and recall of the proposed system are 81% and 80%, respectively, with threshold value was set to 0.7.

  • In this Paper, we propose a new motion search algorithm called CDTS (Cross-Diamond-Triangle Search algorithm) that uses optimal search pattern according to the position of a search area to improve the performance of CDS(Cross-Diamond Search algorithm) as well as CDHSs(Cross-Diamond-Hexagonal Searches algorithms). We analyze motion distributions in various test video sequences to apply optimal search pattern according to a position of search area. Based on the result of this analysis, we propose a new triangle-shaped search pattern whose structure is asymmetric while previous search patterns are generally symmetric in conventional algorithms. In CDTS, we apply cross- and diamond-shaped search patterns to central search areas, and triangle- and diamond-shaped patterns to the other areas. Applying CDTS to test video sequences, the proposed scheme can reduce search points more than CDS and CDHSs by 16.22$\%$ and 3.09$\%$, respectively, without any visual quality degradation.

  • Graphical user interfaces (GUI) in modern software deliver information visually, and a well-designed interface can provide information to the use in an organized and intuitive manner while poorly-designed interfaces can cause visual inconvenience and confusion. In order to effectively deliver information to the user, visual attention should be placed on a prominent location in the image. This paper introduces a method based on a human visual system (HVS) that can improve Metro-style GUIs by reducing a user's workload to visually find information. Our method is designed with spatial mapping and color mapping for buttons in the Metro-style GUI. Also we define a metric for Metro-style GUI effectiveness, including an optimization algorithm. The results show that our method improves the performance of visual search tasks in a Metro-style GUI.

  • In this paper, we propose an scalable re-detection for correlation filter in visual tracking. In real world, there are lots of target disappearances and reappearances during tracking, thus failure detection and re-detection methods are needed. One of the important point for re-detection is that a searching area must be large enough to find the missing target. For robust visual tracking, we adopt kernelized correlation filter as a baseline. Correlation filters have been extensively studied for visual object tracking in recent years. However conventional correlation filters detect the target in the same size area with the trained filter which is only 2 to 3 times larger than the target. When the target is disappeared for a long time, we need to search a wide area to re-detect the target. Proposed algorithm can search the target in a scalable area, hence the searching area is expanded by 2% in every frame from the target loss. Four datasets are used for experiments and both qualitative and quantitative results are shown in this paper. Our algorithm succeed the target re-detection in challenging datasets while conventional correlation filter fails.

  • Two experiments were carried out to compare the suitability in visual tasks between cathode-ray tube (CRT) and thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD). In the first experiment, the subjects were requested to detect pre-assigned target words or icons among distracters presented under time-invariant (static) image mode. The subjects' visual performance and fatigue were assessed while carrying out search tasks with dim and bright ambient light conditions. Significant interaction effects were found among displays, task types, and ambient light conditions. Due to visual fatigue, the subjects' accommodative power decreased in the end of task and the degradation was more significant for the CRT users and under bright ambient light. IN the second experiment, the subjects performed information processing task with time-varying road signs at a driving simulator to assess interaction effects between display types and changing speed of dynamic image. The perception time using TFT-TCD was shorter under slow image change while that of CRT was shorter rapid image change. Findings from this study suggest that, to improve visual task performance, users should carefully select their visual display type depending on the task to be performed.

  • The way of change detection in which presence of a different item is determined between memory and test arrays with a brief in-between time interval resembles how visual search is done considering that the different item is searched upon the onset of a test array being compared against the items in memory. According to the resemblance, the present study examined whether varying the probability of change occurrence in a visual short-term memory-based change detection task can influence the aspect of response-decision making (i.e., change prevalence effect). The simple-feature change detection task in the study consisted of a set of four colored boxes followed by another set of four colored boxes between which the participants determined presence or absence of a color change from one box to the other. The change prevalence was varied to 20, 50, or 80% in terms of change occurrences in total trials, and their change detection errors, detection sensitivity, and their subsequent RTs were analyzed. The analyses revealed that as the change prevalence increased, false alarms became more frequent while misses became less frequent, along with delayed correct-rejection responses. The observed change prevalence effect looks very similar to the target prevalence effect varying according to probability of target occurrence in visual search tasks, indicating that the background principles deriving these two effects may resemble each other.

  • Relevance judgment is important in terms of improving the effectiveness of information retrieval systems, and it has been dominant for users to search and use images utilizing internet and digital technologies. However, in the field of image retrieval, there have been only a few studies in terms of identifying relevance criteria. The purpose of this study aims to identify and characterize the non-relevance criteria from the failed image searches. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, a total of 135 participants were recruited and a total of 1,452 criteria items were collected for this study. Analyses and identification on the data set found thirteen criteria such as 'topicality', 'visual content', 'accuracy', 'visual feature', 'completeness', 'appeal to user', 'focal point', 'bibliographic information', 'impression', 'posture', 'face feature', 'novelty', and 'time frame'. Among these criteria, 'visual content' and 'focal point' were introduced in this current study, while 'action' criterion identified in previous studies was not shown in this current study. When image needs and image uses are analyzed with these criteria, there are distinctive differences depending on different image needs and uses.

  • This paper proposes an expert system which can enhance the accuracy of real-time bus reconfiguration strategy by adopting local minimum tree search method and minimize the spreading effect of the fault by considering totally the operating condition when a main transformer fault occurs in the automated substation. The local minimum tree search method to expand the best-first search method. This method has an advantage which can improve the performance of solution within the limits of the real-time condition. The inference strategy proposed expert system consists of two stages. The first stage determines the switching candidate set by searching possible switching candidates starting from the main transformer or busbar related to the event. And, second stage determines the rational real-time bus reconfiguration strategy based on heuristic rules for the obtained switching candidate set. Also, this paper studies the generalized distribution substation modelling using graph theory and a substation database is designed based on the study result. The inference engine of the expert system and the substation database is implemented in MFC function of Visual C++. Finally, the performance and effectiveness of the proposed expert system is verified by comparing the best-first search solution and local minimum tree search solution based on diversity event simulations for typical distribution substation.

  • As more and more digital images are made by various applications, image retrieval becomes a primary concern in technology of multimedia. This paper presents color based descriptor that uses information of color distribution in color images which is the most basic element for image search and performance of proposed visual feature is evaluated through the simulation. In designing the image search descriptor used color histogram, HSV, Daubechies 9/7 and 2 level wavelet decomposition provide better results than other parameters in terms of computational time and performances. Also histogram quadratic matrix outperforms the sum of absolute difference in similarity measurements, but spends more than 60 computational times.
