  • 1. Objectives : This research was proposed to find our the pathology of Soeumin in Sasang Constitutional Medicine(SCM). 2. Methods : The related contents of the pathology of Soeumin were selected in Je-Ma Lee's literatures such as "Dongmu-YuGo(東武遺稿)"(DYG), "Donguisusebowon-SaSangchobongyun(東醫壽世保元四象草本卷)"(DSS), "Donguisusebowon-GabObon(東醫壽世保元甲午本)"(DGO), "Donguisusebowon-ShinChukbon(東醫壽世保元辛丑本)"(DSC), and the research was written in order to find out the physiology and pathology of Soeumin in SCM. 3. Results and Conclusions : The chronical change of pathologic concept in Soeumin diseases as follows: Pathology in Soeumin diseases was much Cold Qi(寒氣), and more descending Qi, less ascending Qi in DYG, DSS. In "Discourse on the viscera and bowels" of DGO and DSC, Soeumin has a circulation of Water-Food Hot Qi of Spleen Group(脾黨) and Water-Food Cold Qi of Kidney Group(腎黨). Exterior Disease(表病) was the injury of Exterior-Qi such as eye-shoulder Qi(目膂氣) by Pleasure-Nature-Qi(樂性氣), and Interior Disease(裏病) was the injury of Interior-Qi such as spleen-stomach Qi(脾胃氣) by Joy-Emotion-Qi(喜情氣). All diseases of Soeumin are caused by insufficient Warm Yang Qi(陽煖之氣) in Spleen Group(脾黨), so the pathology of Soeumin was focused on Requisite energy(保命之主) and each small viscera and bowels(偏小之臟). In this viewpoint, the schema of Soeumin diseases such as Ulkwang-syndrome(鬱狂證), Mangyang-syndrome(亡陽證), Taeum-syndrome(太陰證) and Soeum-syndrome(少陰證) were designed to explain the mechanism of each syndrome.

  • Objectives : This paper aims to lay out the meaning of Gongjindan, its indications and mechanisms based on relevant contents in the 『Donguibogam』, for better clinical application. Methods : First, Gongjindan related contents were searched in the medical classics database. Next, contents from the 『Shizhaibaiyixuanfang』 and the 『Donguibogam』 were analyzed. Finally, the properties of the Gongjindan ingredients were examined based on the 『Donguibogam』 and the 『Zhongyaodacidian』. Results & Conclusions : Examination of its indications according to the 『Donguibogam』 in terms of applicable age and viscera/bowels, Gongjindan could be applied to children with constitutional insufficiency and elder generations, but it could not be said to be most appropriate for older generations. In regards to viscera/bowels, Gongjindan sends water upwards into fire in the water-rising-fire-descending mechanism, which makes it applicable to symptoms of anxiety and fear by tonifying the consumed Jing and Blood caused by Liver deficiency. To summarize, those who would most benefit from Gongjindan are young adults in weak, fearful and lethargic conditions.

  • Many chapters of the Hwangjenaegyeong[HN] explain the process of transmission and transmutation of disease. The transmission and transmutation process in the HN can be categorized into one between the viscera and bowels, and another of the external pathogenic gi itself. The process between the viscera and bowels indicates the transport of the pathologic burden between each viscera and bowel. This again is categorized into three types. Interpromoting, intercontrolling and that by Saeng-yang(生陽), Sa-eum(死陰). Next, the transport of the pathogenic gi can be categorized into one moving inwards from the exterior according to personal traits, and that according to the three Eum and three Yang. Although there are numerous types of transmission and transmutation, there are two main criteria in understanding the process. First, whether the process is in accordance with the physiological or natural flow of the body. Interpromoting and three Eum three Yang processes are such examples. To follow the physiological flow of the body means to correspond to either the Heaven and Earth or the original physiology of the human body. Therefore, the disease progresses according to a certain date or season. This indicates a partial malfunction in the circulation of the vital energy, which is relatively easy to recover. In contrast, there are processes that go against the physiological flow, for example, intercontrolling transmission and transmutation. This process focuses on the movement of the pathogenic gi rather than the vital gi. The disease progresses regardless of the flow of the vital energy, and sequential functional damage occurs accordingly. Consequently, as the transmission and transmutation continue, formerly passed organs are left damaged, and the whole process is headed towards death. The second criteria for understanding the process is whether it is cyclic or not. To have a cyclic pattern means that the occurrence of a disease and the time of death is not fixed. Transmission and transmutation processes that have a cyclic pattern mostly follow the physiological flow of the body. As a result, they rarely end in deaths, and the process is centered on vital energy. On the other hand, those with acyclic patterns have a fixed occurrence and death point in the course of the disease. They are mostly unnatural processes, found in fatal acute diseases or consumption diseases.

  • The Sa-am acupuncture is the acupuncture method created during Chosun Dynasty. It is a unique acupuncture method that was created solely in Korea. Its theories are based on the 69th article of "Classic of Difficult Issues", or Nanjing (難經), which says "tonify its mother when deficiency occurs, and purgate its son when excess occurs" (虛則補其母, 實則瀉其子); the concept of "controlling the viscera which restrains the target" "抑其官" was added to this theory to form the principle of Sa-am acupuncture. It is significant that it turns to the basic principles of the Five Viscera and Six Bowels rather than the 體針 or 阿是針 of the existing acupuncure. Sa-am acupuncture was established in the middle of Chosun Dynasty and was popularized to the practitioners of Korean Medicine through transcripts and printed books. The medical books of at the time of Japanese imperialism that introduced Sa-am acupuncture are "經絡學總論", "舍岩鍼灸訣", "經濟要訣", "靑囊訣", "察病要訣", "濟世寶鑑", "經驗寢具編", and "舍岩 靑囊訣". The magazine that mentions the Sa-am acupuncture is "韓方醫藥". The books on Traditional Medicine that is related to Sa-am acupuncture were of great help in reconstruction of Sa-am acupuncture after the liberation of Korea and explaining the principle of Sa-am acupunture in various angles.

장부(臟腑)와 삼음삼양(三陰三陽)으로 살펴본 소갈(消渴) 병기(病機) 연구 (Study on the Mechanism of Wasting-thirst in Viewpoint of 'Viscera and Bowels' and 'Three Yin and Three Yang')

  • The applicability of Diabetes Mellitus(DM) in Oriental Medicine might be placed under the category in Wasting-thirst(消渴, WT). However, because of WT having so various concepts, classification, and names in Oriental Medicine, this resulted in confusion in applying WT treatment to DM. WT occurs mainly due to dryness-heat(燥熱) which by depleting 'Fluid and Humor'(津液) makes symptoms of thirst(口渴) swift digestion with rapid hungering(消穀善饑) frequent urination(小便頻數) according to the "Internal Classic"(內經). WT was also called Sodan(消癉), Bidan(脾癉), or Sojoong(消中) in the "Internal Classic", which was caused by not only the disorder of 'five viscera' (五臟), but also the failure of 'three yin and three yang'(三陰三陽). However, the doctors of those days had a tendency to manage WT (including DM) with herbal drugs of dryness-heat or with drugs that recover the pancreas and the kidney, that have a tendency to appreciate that WT is the disease of 'five viscera'(五臟). Accoding to the "Internal Classic"(內經) and "Jinguiyaolue"(金匱要略), WT was appreciated that WT is also due to the disorder of Meridian including 'three yin and three yang'(三陰三陽) theory. Disorder of 'yang brightness'(陽明) or 'reverting yin'(厥陰) would cause Wasting-thirst(消渴), so the 'three yin and three yang'(三陰三陽) theory should be considered in WT treatments. Furthermore, 'yang brightness'(陽明) and 'reverting yin'(厥陰) all belong to 'the door'(闔) in the bolt-door-pivot(關闔樞) theory, and the mean of 'the door'(闔) is the function of storage, so we could understood WT is the wasting disease due to the disorder of 'the door'(闔) system in Meridian. WT should also be understood by the point of the bolt-door-pivot(關闔樞) theory in addition to the 'three yin and three yang'(三陰三陽) theory.

  • Through researching 鄕藥救急方, the oldest medical text published in Korea in existence known to date, a study from a Traditional Korean Medicine perspective was conducted. This study aims to observe the treatment of oral, glottal, labial, and dental diseases starting from 統一新羅時代 to the Koryo dynasty from a historical perspective and also find out what clinical significance it withholds. "鄕藥救急方" proposes methods of nurturing the teeth and in doing so displays the tendency of Traditional Korean Medicine of putting much weight on preventing diseases and nurturing the body. "鄕藥救急方" considers the oral, glottal, labial, and dental diseases as not only fundamental problems in itself but also treats them from a perspective that they are results of disharmony among the five viscera and the six bowels. The treatment methods mentioned in "鄕藥救急方" are directly cited in "鄕藥集成方" of early Chosun dynasty. In "東醫寶鑑" of mid-Chosun dynasty, however, changes and modificatios are made to the prescriptions.

  • Theory of visceral and meridian system is the most important part in traditional Korean medicine. In theory of visceral system, the aspect of function has been emphasized more than anatomical substance. In this research, the concept of visceral system would be attempted to be expanded from 'five viscera and six bowels' to whole body, and new analysis system composed of genesis, structure, function and operation. The theories of traditional Korean medicine remain at the organ system or organ level, therefore progressive research using the new analysis system is needed to approach tissue and cell levels.

  • With the booming complementary medicine as a social trend of well-being, treatment by the sound waves of six kinds of syllables is believed to restore that healthy balance to the body. Sound therapy refers to a range of therapies in which sound is used to treat physical and mental conditions. Healing is done by transmitting beneficial sound to the affected area related to five viscera and six bowels. The healing sound may be produced by a voice. sound wave vibrations are to treat physical and mental conditions. In general, this therapy is based on the theory that all of life vibrates, including people's bodies. When a person's healthy resonant frequency is out of balance, physical and emotional health is affected. When a person's healthy resonant frequency is out of balance, physical and emotional health is affected.
