  • This study employs model of susceptibility to imported media to examine Korean drama exposure, evaluation and viewing intention among viewers living in foreign cultural background. Analyzing data collected from 176 female viewers in the U.S., it founds knowledge about Korea and general drama exposure give direct effect on the future viewing intention. Korean drama exposure directly affects drama evaluation and viewing intention. Korean network, however, has no significant effect on the dependent variables. Result of the present study shows that cultural capital of foreign viewers has effects on Korean drama consumption. Another result that behavior of general drama consumption has contributed to Korean drama consumption gives meaningful implication for the policy of Korean television export.

  • This study explored the effects of three-wall (3-W) movie screen on advertisement viewers' feelings of physical presence, perceived pleasure, and evaluation of advertisements. The findings from an experiment (N = 188) in a real movie theater demonstrate that 3-W screen enhances the feelings and perception toward the advertisements, with physical presence presenting the mediating effects. Of note is that the effects of 3-W screen were presented differently depending upon the types of the advertisements; the dynamic one and the static one. The effects were mostly applied to the dynamic advertisement, but not to the static one. Given the high costs of installing 3-W screen in movie theaters, the study's findings suggest more elaborate designs of advertisements to enhance the applicability of 3-W screen.

  • As the mobilization of audience' media consumption getting escalating, terrestrial broadcasting, especially public broadcasting is severely affected in Korea. After 9 years' downfall, public broadcasting is trying to aim for citizen platform. Even though the Korean broadcasting law already has the articles of protecting viewer's right and profit, it has some contradictory limits also. Implied by Japanese magazine Taberutsushin, which was originated from CSA model, I suggest the new model of committee for viewers. The new committee for viewers has various planning committees and evaluation committees to ensure citizen's participation on planning, programming, and production. The new committee for viewers would function as minimum system to prompt the public broadcasting to play it's role in rapidly changing digital era.

  • When we research a landscape or make a Landscape Impact Assessment, we use the image of a specific season like summer or fall. Since there are four distinct seasons, each with a different landscape, researchers need to understand viewers′visual preferences for individual seasonal landscapes. The purpose of this study is to investigate viewers′visual preferences according to seasonal change and the respondent′s age, gender and profession. In this research, the independent variable is season: suing, summer, fall, winter and snowy winter. Three landscape types used in the experiment: forest, street and agriculture. Each landscape type has two sites for reliability. The assessment media for this research are pictures featuring landscapes taken in each of the four seasons. The study used the "paired comparison" method for taking the score of visual preference. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The summer landscape has the highest visual preference score. However, spring and fall landscapes should also be considered for visual landscape evaluation. 2. The visual preference of winter landscape covered with snow is very high, but since snow is temporal and irregular, it is difficult to consider this factor for visual landscape evaluation. 3. The visual preference score of winter is the lowest of four seasons. The attractive factors of spring are flowers, summer is greenery and fall is autumnal tints. But these are not present in winter. 4. The result of visual preferences according to age groups, gender and profession have no serious differences. 5. Visual preference to scenery of 4 seasons by age group was not different from general preference and thus was concluded to have no connection with age. 6. As a result from the research of visual preference to scenery of 4 seasons by sex, women were shown to like snow-scene more than men. This study presents an indication of general preferences of seasonal landscapes. It is expected that more advanced study will proceed after this one.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop an integrated viewer which can display both text and image files on the Internet environment. Up to now, most viewers for full-text databases can be displayed documents only by image or graphic viewers. The newly developed system can compress document files in commercial word processors (e.g, 한글TM, WordTM, ExceITM, PowerpointTM, HunminJungumTM, ArirangTM, CADTM), as well as conventional TIFF image file in smaller size, which were converted into DVI(DeVice Independent) file format, and display them on computer screen. IDoc Viewer was evaluated to test its performance by user group, consisting of 5 system developers, 5 librarians, and 10 end-users. IDoc Viewer has been proved to be good or excellent at 20 out of 26 check lists.

  • The measurement and evaluation of an audience's visual attention are crucial processes for the scientific production of various contents and services. It has been alleged that a vector exists between objects on a screen, but this has not been explored empirically. This study tested whether or not there are any positive correlations between screen vectors and viewers' eye movements. Participants were exposed to four groups of pictures representing an independent vector, continuing vector, converging vector, and diverging vector. The results showed that vectors on screens induced viewers' eye movements to the vector object by the directivity of the visual stimuli.

  • The area of discourse analysis has long neglected the value of images as a semiotic resource in communication. This paper suggests that like language, images are rich in meaning potential and are governed by visual grammar structures which can be utilized to decode the meanings of images. Employing a theoretical framework in visual communication, two digital images are examined for their representational and interactive dimensions and the dimensions' relation to the magazine advertisement genre. The results show that the framework identified narrative and conceptual processes, relations between participants and viewers, and symbolic attributes of the images, which all contribute to the sociological interpretations of the images. The identities and relationships between viewers and participants suggested in the images signify desirable qualities that may be associated to the product of the advertiser. The findings support the theory of visual grammar and highlight the potential of images to convey multi-layered meanings.
