Purpose: Nurse's second victim experiences could influence organizational negative work-related outcome. The purpose of this study was to investigate the casual relationship between nurses' second victim experience and third victim experience and multiple mediation effects of second victim supports. Methods: A cross-sectional, self-report survey (the Second Victim Experience and Support Tool) was conducted with 305 nurses working in a general hospital. Data were collected from October 20 to November 25, 2016 and analyzed using SPSS Win version 23.0. Results: The nurses' perceived second victim experience was $3.24{\pm}0.61$ and the third victim experience was $3.12{\pm}0.92$. Nurses' second victim experience was found to have a direct effect on increasing third victim experience and indirect effect of colleague support as mediator (p<.05). However, institutional support and supervisor support had not a partial and indirect effect on third victim experience. Conclusion:This study is one of the first to connect second victim experience to third victim experience in South Korea. This study broadens the understanding of the negative effects of a second victim experience influence third victim experience. When involvement in patient safety events, the important role of colleague support in limiting nurse's third victim experience have been acknowledged. This study reinforces the efforts health care leaders are making to develop interventional programs to colleague support their staff as they recover from adverse event involvement.
Surveys are an important data collection method for national statistics in Korea. As of July 22, 2024, based on data provided by the MDIS of Statistics Korea, approximately 92% of national statistics are compiled using the survey method, and about 85% of these rely primarily on face-to-face interviews for data collection. However, with the increase in single-person households, the nonresponse rate of surveys has been rising each year. This study examined the behaviors of respondents across different survey modes used in the 2020 Korean Crime Victim Survey, whose raw data about survey response modes is available for public use on the MDIS website in Statistics Korea. The results show that, overall, the younger the age group, the higher the proportion of self-administered responses, with this proportion being higher for female than male except over 60 years old. Notably, the 20s age group has a significantly higher percentage of self-administered (TAPI) responses for both male and female. Furthermore, the response using tablets generally has a higher proportion compared to the response using paper across all age groups except for females in their teens, regardless of whether the survey is interviewer-administered or self-administered.
Purpose: This study was investigated the mediating effect of coping behaviors in the relationship between the second victim experiences after patient safety incidents and the nursing practice changes. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed using structured questionnaires. Participants were 218 clinical nurses in general tertiary hospitals in South Korea. Data were collected through an online survey and snowball sampling from August 11 to September 6 2020. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 program. A mediation analysis was performed using multiple regression and a simple mediation model applying the PROCESS macro with 95% bias-corrected bootstrap confidence interval. Results: The mean scores of second victim experiences was 3.41/5. Approach coping (β = .55, p < .001) and the avoidant coping (β = - .23, p = .001) showed mediation effects in the relationship between second victim experiences and constructive change in nursing practice. Avoidant coping (β = .29, p < .001) showed a mediation effect in the relationship between second victim experiences and defensive change in nursing practice. Conclusion: Coping behaviors has a mediating effect on the relationship between second victim experiences and nursing practice changes. To ensure that nurses do not experience second victim, medical institutions should have a culture of patient safety that employs a systematic approach rather than blame individuals. They also need to develop strategies that enhance approach coping and reducing avoidant coping to induce nurses' constructive practice changes in clinical nurses in experiencing second victims due to patient safety incidents.
In this study, causes and consequences of bullying were explored, focusing on victim personality and appearance factors. The research model included the relationships among bullying, important causes of bullying (aggression, cleanliness, and obesity of victims) and consequences of bullying (self-esteem and depression) and was tested through survey data from 594 (194 male and 404 female) middle school students. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, and path analysis with SPSS and AMOS. In the results of the model tests, victims who are more aggressive, less clean, and more overweight are more likely to be bullied. In addition, adolescents bullied by others tend to have lower self-esteem and more depression. Furthermore, the model comparison was assessed by gender and a difference between the two gender models was found. In the check of critical ratio for difference, it was concluded that the cleanliness of the victim is a more important cause of bullying for male adolescents than for female adolescents. It is meaningful to confirm the effects of the victim's appearance factors on bullying in the literature focusing on personality issues of victims. Educators and counselors may refer to the findings in developing counseling guidelines and manuals to prevent bullying in school.
This study aims to investigate the effects of adolescent's academic stress and their experience of school bulling victim on suicidal ideation, and the meditating effect of self-esteem among variables by utilizing the path analysis. Quantitative survey research was conducted with 1735 students attending primary, middle and high school to identify the following the key results. First, adolescent's academic stress directly influenced their suicidal ideation and its' effect was indirectly mediated by the subjects's self-esteem. Second, the relationship between the experience of school bullying victim and suicidal ideation was partly mediated by self-esteem. In other words, the severer academic stress in youth and the experience of bullying victim were, the higher suicidal ideation were; however, the adolescent's high self-esteem played a mediating role in lowering their suicidal ideation by increasing the ability of overcoming difficulties and risks.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to clarify mediating effects of self-concept on mental health of children and adolescents who fell victim to violence. Methods: A survey was conducted on 4th, 5th, and 6th graders from 2 elementary schools and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students from 3 middle schools (n=2,391). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and AMOS. Results: The mean scores of mental health and self-concept in the subjects were 4.5 and 184.9 respectively. The rate of poor mental health in students who had fallen victim to violence was more than twice as high as that in students who had never experienced it. The self-concept of students who experienced violence had a tendency to decline. Violence experience and self-concept accounted for 47.7%(43.0% for boys and 53.4% for girls) of the changes in mental health. The indirect mediating effects of self-concept were significant. Conclusion: Based on the findings, the following is suggested. Schools should offer a self-concept improvement program for students with a distorted self-concept caused by falling victim to violence. It could help such adolescents have a positive self image and improve their mental health.
