Current vibration serviceability assessment criteria for wind-induced vibrations in tall buildings are based largely on human 'perception' thresholds which are shown not to be directly translatable to human 'acceptability' of vibrations. There is also a considerable debate about both the metrics and criteria for vibration acceptability, such as frequency of occurrence or peak vs mean vibration, and how these might vary with the nature of the vibration. Furthermore, the design criteria are necessarily simplified for ease of application so cannot account for a range of environmental, situational and human factors that may enhance or diminish the impact of vibrations on serviceability. The dual-site VSimulators facility was created specifically to provide an experimental platform to address gaps in understanding of human response to building vibration. This paper considers how VSimulators can be used to inform general design guidance and support design of specific buildings for habitability, in terms of vibration, which allow engineers and clients to make informed decisions with regard to sustainable design, in terms of energy and financial cost. This paper first provides a brief overview of current vibration serviceability assessment guidelines, and the current understanding and limitations of occupants' acceptability of wind-induced motion in tall buildings. It then describes how the dual-site VSimulators facility at the Universities of Bath and Exeter can be used to assess the effects of motion and environment on human comfort, wellbeing and productivity with examples of how the facility capabilities have been used to provide new, human experience based experimental research approaches.
Proper orthogonal decomposition is a statistical pattern analysis technique for finding the dominant components, called the proper orthogonal modes, in ensembles of spatially distributed data. We present recent ideas based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and detailed experiments that yield new perspectives into the microscale structures. The linearized modeling technique based on POD is very useful to show the principal characteristics of the complex dynamic responses.
Recently, the application of viscoelastic material in the field of vibration isolation has gradually increased due to its achievement in structural damping capacity, and many of the theoretical and experimental study has been carried out. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of the visoelastically supported cantilever beam, of which govering equation is based on the Bernoulli- Euler equation, is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Expression for stiffness of multi-layered viscoelastic materal has been developed using variables such as frequency and number of layers, and further, based on this expression, damping characteristic of the beam is investigated with experimental verification.
Occupants induced floor vertical vibrations may cause other occupant's annoyance and lead to social loss. To help control such floor vibrations, several criteria have been developed mostly based on human perception tests and floor vibration tests. Floor vibration is evaluated by comparison with criteria and vibration parameters of subject floor, such as frequency, damping ratio, acceleration value, vibration duration time and occurrence frequency. Three acceleration value parameters are used in criteria; peak acceleration, rms acceleration and VDV, when a floor vibration serviceability is evaluated. Meanwhile rms acceleration and peak acceleration are adopted as vibration limit value in criteria and researches of human perception for vibration. Occupants induced floor vibration is transient rather than steady state. However, rms acceleration is not reliable parameter for evaluating transient vibration. The objective of this study is to investigate the characters of human perception level according to acceleration value parameters for vibration induced by heel impacts and walking activities.
In this study, the feasibility of vibration-based damage alarming algorithms are numerically evaluated for wind turbine tower structures which are subjected to harmonic force excitation. Firstly, the algorithm of vibration-based damage alarming for the wind turbine tower (WTT) is visited. The natural frequency change, modal assurance criterion (MAC) and frequency-response-ratio assurance criterion (FRRAC) are utilized to recognize changes in dynamic characteristics due to a structural damage. Secondly, a finite element model based on a real wind turbine tower is established in a structural analysis program, Midas FEA. The harmonic force is applied at the rotor level as presence of excitation. Several structural damage scenarios are numerically simulated in segmental joints of the wind turbine model. Finally, the natural frequency change, MAC and FRRAC algorithm are employed to identify the structural damage occurred in the finite element model. The results show that these criteria could be used as promising damage existence indicators for the damage alarming in wind turbine supporting structures.
An intensity-based optical fiber vibration sensor is applied to detect and evaluate damages and fiber failure of composites. The optical fiber vibration sensor is constructed by placing two cleaved fiber end, one of which is cantilevered in a hollow glass tube. The movement of the cantilevered section lags behind the rest of the sensor in response to an applied vibration and the amount of light coupled between the two fibers is thereby modulated. Vibration characteristics of the optical fiber vibration sensor are investigated. Surface mounted optical fiber vibration sensor is used in tensile and indentation test. Experimental results show that the optical fiber sensor can detect damages and fiber failure of composites correctly.
This paper presents nonlinear vibration characteristics of a vertical passive zero stiffness isolator. The passive isolator can achieve zero stiffness through buckling of notched flexure caused by a compressive force. First, a simulation model of the isolator was built based on elastic beam theory. As increasing the compression force, time and frequency responses of the isolator were simulated. In addition, further nonlinear vibration characteristics were investigated through a bifurcation diagram and a Poincare's map, which shows that even chaostic vibration could happen. The simulations show that as the compressive force increases, the stiffness goes close to zero and the nonlinear characteristic becomes stronger to have a great effect on the isolation performance.
This study deals a way to reduce the transformer noises. The first step is to identify the source of the transformer noises. The second step is obtaining the vibration characteristics of transformer; its natural frequencies and mode shapes. Based on these information, an method to reduce the vibration of transformer can be found. The cause of transformer noises is mainly due to the magnetostrictive vibration of a core which is made of ferromagnetic substances. It is well known that the magnetostrictive vibration of a core is unavoidable, and a way to reduce the transformer noise by structural design is needed. It requires understanding the vibration characteristics. The natural frequencies and the mode shapes of transformer are analyzed by performing the modal testing.
The engine excitation forces are considered as major vibration source for the forklift truck, especially in small class. Even though the current engine mounting system designs are acceptable for vibration isolation, the performance of the engine mounting system is still required for the tendency of light weight, higher power and driver's higher vibration requirement. In this paper vibration reduction technique of forklift engine which is supported on rubber mounts is presented. Based on the dynamic model of resilient engine mounting system, design evaluation program is established. The design optimization technique and evaluation method of system properties are discussed. Effects of optimal design are validated through comparison with test results.
Vibration measurement of rotating shafts by installing sensors such as accelerometers or displacement sensors is costly and dangerous in some cases. As an alternative method, vibration measurement using camera images has been researched because sensor installation is not needed and displacement of a rotating shaft can be directly evaluated. This paper also suggests the enhanced technique applicable to the measurement of vibration of a large-scale rotating shaft. The concurrent methods based on camera images use marks, which are hardly applicable to rotating shafts. The proposed method measures vibration without any marks by evaluating shape errors. The working principle of the method is described and verified by a series of experiments.
