The piping system accounts for a large portion of the machinery structure of a plant, and is considered as a very important mechanical structure for plant safety. Accordingly, it is used in most energy plants in the nuclear, gas, and heavy chemical industries. In particular, the piping system for a nuclear plant is generally complicated and uses the reactor and its cooling system. The piping equipment is exposed to diverse loads such as weight, temperature, pressure, and seismic load from pipes and fluids, and is used to transfer steam, oil, and gas. In ultrasound infrared thermography, which is an active thermography technology, a 15-100 kHz ultrasound wave is applied to the subject, and the resulting heat from the defective parts is measured using a thermography camera. Because this technique can inspect a large area simultaneously and detect defects such as cracks and delamination in real time, it is used to detect defects in the new and renewable energy, car, and aerospace industries, and recently, in piping defect detection. In this study, ultrasound infrared thermography is used to detect information for the diagnosis of nuclear equipment and structures. Test specimens are prepared with piping materials for nuclear plants, and the optimally designed ultrasound horn and ultrasound vibration system is used to determine damages on nuclear plant piping and detect defects. Additionally, the detected images are used to improve the reliability of the surface and internal defect detection for nuclear piping materials, and their field applicability and reliability is verified.

Fitting process carried out in automobile transmission assembly line is classified into three classes; heat fitting, press fitting, and their combined fitting. Heat fitting is a method that heats gear to a suitable range under the tempering temperature and squeezes it toward the outer diameter of shaft. Its stress depends on the yield strength of gear. Press fitting is a method that generally squeezes gear toward that of shaft at room temperature by press. Another method heats warmly gear and safely squeezes it toward that of shaft. Warm shrink fitting process for automobile transmission part is now gradually increased, but the parts (shaft/gear) assembled by this process produced dimensional change in both outer diameter and profile of the gear. So that it may cause noise and vibration between gears. In order to solve these problems, we need an analysis of warm shrink fitting process, in which design parameters are involved; contact pressure according to fitting interference between outer diameter of shaft and inner diameter of gear, fitting temperature, and profile tolerance of gear. In this study, an closed form equation to predict contact pressure and fitting load was proposed in order to develop optimization technique of warm shrink fitting process and verified its reliability through the experimental results measured in the field and FEM, that is, thermal-structural coupled field analysis. Actual loads measured in the field have a good agreement with the results obtained by theoretical and finite element analysis and also the expanded amounts of the outer diameters of the gears have a good agreement with results.

A mathematical model, GUNBLAST, of blast waves emitted from a gun muzzle is established, and structural response analyses for the blast load are performed. The blast wave can be divided into two kinds of waves, free field and reflected blast waves. In this research, the free field blast wave model is established by the use of a scaling approach, and the reflected blast wave is calculated by using the oblique shock theory and computational fluid dynamic calculation. GUNBLAST is applied to two kinds of structural models. To investigate the effect of the muzzle distance from a structural surface, the blast waves on a plate for various muzzle distances are compared to uniform loads. Moreover, the transient response analysis of an aircraft wing model with a 12.7mm gun is carried out by using MSC/NASTRAN. From the results, it can be shown that the blast wave can cause broad random vibration and high frequency damage to equipments mounted in the aircraft.

In this paper, to protect the piping in nuclear power plants and various plant facilities, we have developed a damper using the friction method and carried out a study to analyze the performance. Friction typed damper means a device for attenuating vibration by generating a frictional force to the bearing and the shaft by applying a compressive force to the MER-Spring. In order to analyze the performance of the damper, the properties of MER-Spring and friction materials were analyzed, a study on the effects of friction was carried out, and the behavior of this equation was established. And, to determine whether deformation of the material and to examine the reliability of the behavior equation established, prototypes was produced and, through a performance test and finite element analysis of a damper made of specimens, they were analyzed. As a result, it is noted that the reliability of the material was confirmed, the coefficient of friction have to be adjusted according to the velocity, cyclic loading test and finite element analysis results show exhibits excellent results. In addition, a review of the dynamic loads in the future shall be performed for the usage in more broad fields.
Finite element stiffness matrix methods are presented for finding natural frequencies (or buckling loads) and modes of repetitive structures. The usual approximate finite element formulations are included, but more relevantly they also permit the use of 'exact finite elements', which account for distributed mass exactly by solving appropriate differential equations. A transcendental eigenvalue problem results, for which all the natural frequencies are found with certainty. The calculations are performed for a single repeating portion of a rotationally or linearly (in one, two or three directions) repetitive structure. The emphasis is on rotational periodicity, for which principal advantages include: any repeating portions can be connected together, not just adjacent ones; nodes can lie on, and members along, the axis of rotational periodicity; complex arithmetic is used for brevity of presentation and speed of computation; two types of rotationally periodic substructures can be used in a multi-level manner; multi-level non-periodic substructuring is permitted within the repeating portions of parent rotationally periodic structures or substructures and; all the substructuring is exact, i.e., the same answers are obtained whether or not substructuring is used. Numerical results are given for a rotationally periodic structure by using exact finite elements and two levels of rotationally periodic substructures. The solution time is about 500 times faster than if none of the rotational periodicity had been used. The solution time would have been about ten times faster still if the software used had included all the substructuring features presented.
Rubber components have been widely used in automotive industry as anti-vibration components for many years. These subjected to fluctuating loads, often fail due to the nucleation and growth of defects or cracks. To prevent such failures, it is necessary to understand the fatigue failure mechanism for rubber materials and to evaluate the fatigue life for rubber components. The objective of this study is to develop the durability analysis process for vulcanized rubber components, which is applicable to predict fatigue life at initial product design step. The determination method of nonlinear material constants for FE analysis was proposed. In order to investigate the applicability of the commonly used damage parameters, fatigue tests and corresponding finite element analyses were carried out and strain energy density was proposed as the fatigue damage parameter for rubber components. The fatigue analysis for automotive rubber components was performed and the durability analysis process was reviewed.

Free vibration and buckling analysis of multi-delaminated composite beam-columns subjected to axial compressive load is performed in the present study In order to investigate the effects of multi-delaminations on the natural frequency and the elastic buckling load of multi-delaminated beam-columns, the general kinematic continuity conditions are derived from the assumption of constant slope and curvature at the multi-dclamination tip. The characteristic equation of multi-delaminated beam-column is obtained by dividing the global multi-delauunated beam-columns into segments and by imposing recurrence relation from the continuity conditions on each sub-beam-column. The natural frequency and the elastic buck)ing load of multi-delaminated beam-columns according to the incremental load of axial compression, which is limited to the maximum elastic buckling load of sound laminated beam-column, are obtained. It is found that the sizes, locations and numbers of multi-delaminations have significant effect on natural frequency and elastic buckling load, especially the latter ones.

In a prestressed concrete bridge, the magnitude of the prestress force (PF) decreases with time. This unexpected loss can cause failure of a bridge which makes prestress force identification (PFI) critical to evaluate bridge safety. However, it has been difficult to identify the PF non-destructively. Although some research has shown the feasibility of vibration based methods in PFI, the requirement of having a determinate exciting force in these methods hinders applications onto in-service bridges. Ideally, it will be efficient if the normal traffic could be treated as an excitation, but the load caused by vehicles is difficult to measure. Hence it prompts the need to investigate whether PF and moving load could be identified together. This paper presents a synergic identification method to determine PF and moving load applied on a simply supported prestressed concrete beam via the dynamic responses caused by this unknown moving load. This method consists of three parts: (i) the PF is transformed into an external pseudo-load localized in each beam element via virtual distortion method (VDM); (ii) then these pseudo-loads are identified simultaneously with the moving load via Duhamel Integral; (iii) the time consuming problem during the inversion of Duhamel Integral is overcome by the load-shape function (LSF). The method is examined against different cases of PFs, vehicle speeds and noise levels by means of simulations. Results show that this method attains a good degree of accuracy and efficiency, as well as robustness to noise.

An energy-based fatigue life prediction framework was previously developed by the authors for prediction of axial, bending and shear fatigue life at various stress ratios. The framework for the prediction of fatigue life via energy analysis was based on a new constitutive law, which states the following: the amount of energy required to fracture a material is constant. In the first part of this study, energy expressions that construct the constitutive law are equated in the form of total strain energy and the distortion energy dissipated in a fatigue cycle. The resulting equation is further evaluated to acquire the equivalent stress per cycle using energy based methodologies. The equivalent stress expressions are developed both for biaxial and multiaxial fatigue loads and are used to predict the number of cycles to failure based on previously developed prediction criterion. The equivalent stress expressions developed in this study are further used in a new finite element procedure to predict the fatigue life for two and three dimensional structures. In the second part of this study, a new Quadrilateral fatigue finite element is developed through integration of constitutive law into minimum potential energy formulation. This new QUAD-4 element is capable of simulating biaxial fatigue problems. The final output of this finite element analysis both using equivalent stress approach and using the new QUAD-4 fatigue element, is in the form of number of cycles to failure for each element on a scale in ascending or descending order. Therefore, the new finite element framework can provide the number of cycles to failure at each location in gas turbine engine structural components. In order to obtain experimental data for comparison, an Al6061-T6 plate is tested using a previously developed vibration based testing framework. The finite element analysis is performed for Al6061-T6 aluminum and the results are compared with experimental results.

The vibration control performance of a semi-active damper connected to adjacent buildings subjected to seismic loads was investigated. The MR damper was used as a semi-active control device. A fuzzy logic control algorithm was used for effective control of the adjacent buildings connected to the MR damper. In the buildings control coupled with a MR damper, the response reduction of one building results in an increase in the response in another building. Because of these conflict characteristics, multi-objective optimization is required. Therefore, a fuzzy logic control algorithm for the control of a MR damper was optimized using a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Based on numerical analyses, the semi-active fuzzy control of MR damper for adjacent coupled buildings can provide good control performance.
