In an open-pool type research reactor with a downward forced flow in the core, pipes can be under sub-atmospheric pressure because of the large pressure drop at the reactor core in the atmospheric pool. Sub-atmospheric pressure can result in air inflow into the pipe from the pressure difference between the atmosphere and the inside of the pipe, which in a postulated pipe break scenario can lead to the breakdown of the cooling pump. In this study, a plant-scale experiment was conducted to study air inflow in large piping systems by considering the actual operational conditions of an advanced research reactor. The air inflow rate was measured, and the entrained air was visualized to investigate the behavior of air inflow and flow regime depending on the pipe break size. In addition, the developed drift-flux model for a large vertical pipe with a diameter of 600 mm was compared with other correlations. The flow regime transition in a large vertical pipe under downward flow was also studied using the newly developed drift-flux model. Consequently, the characteristics of two-phase flow in a large vertical pipe were found to differ from those in small vertical pipes where liquid recirculation was not dominant.

In this study, the vertical pipe cooling method was developed to propose the pipe cooling method suited for the vertically long mass concrete structures. FEM (finite element method) analysis was carried out to investigate the validity of the vertical pipe cooling method, and the temperature, the behavior of tensile stress of concrete and the crack index were investigated. In result, it was confirmed that the vertical pipe cooling method was effective in the thermal cracking control of mass concrete member.

The paper presents the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid and haying translational linear spring supports. Real pipe systems may have some elastic hanger supports or other mechanical attached parts. which can be regarded as attached spring supports. Governing equations are derived by energy expressions, and numerical technique using Galerkin's method is applied to the equations of small motion of the pipe. Effects of spring supports on the dynamic stability of a vortical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid are fully investigated for various locations and spring constants of elastic supports.

Flexible pipes take advantage of their ability to move, or deflect, under loads without structural damage. Common types of flexible pipes are manufactured from polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), steel, glass fiber reinforced thermosetting polymer plastic (GFRP), and aluminum. In this paper, we present the result of an investigation pertaining to the short-term behavior of buried polyethylene pipe. The mechanical properties of the polyethylene pipe produced in the domestic manufacturer are determined and the results are reported in this paper. In addition, vertical ring deflection is measured by the laboratory model test and the finite element analysis (FEA) is also conducted to simulate the short-term behavior of polyethylene pipe buried underground. Based on results from soil-pipe interaction finite element analyses of polyethylene pipe is used to predict the vertical ring deflection and maximum bending strain of polyethylene pipe.

This paper deals with the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid and having two attached masses. Some valves or other mechanical components in pipe systems can be regarded as attached lumped masses. Governing equations are derived by energy expressions, and numerical technique using Galerkin's method is applied to discretize the equations of small motion of the pipe. Effects of attached masses on the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid are investigated for various locations and magnitudes of the attached lumped masses.

The paper presents the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid and having an intermediate translational linear spring. The translational linear spring can be located at an arbitrary position. Governing equations are derived by energy expressions, and numerical technique using Galerkin's method is applied to discretize the equations of small motion of the pipe. Effects of linear spring supports on the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid are fully investigated for various locations and magnitudes of the translational linear spring.

We have calculated and analyzed the electromagnetic responses of buried conductive pipes due to a horizontal magnetic dipole source on the pound using a three-dimensional (3-D) finite element method to provide useful guidelines for designing electromagnetic pipe locator and for field operation of the system. For single buried pipe, the horizontal component and the horizontal difference of the vertical component of magnetic field show peaks above the pipe. When comparing the width of response curves of both cases around the peak, horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic field shows much narrower peak, 2 times narrower at a half of maximum amplitude, than that of horizontal component of magnetic field. Accordingly, we can pinpoint the horizontal location of pipe on the ground more accurately by measuring the horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic fold. Moreover, it will have a merit in determining the depth of pipe, because the equation for depth estimation is defined just above the pipe. When there are two buried pipes separated by two meters with each other, the response of horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic field has two separate peaks each of which is located above the pipe whereas horizontal magnetic field response has only one peak above the pipe just below the transmitter. Thus, when there exist more than a buried pipe, measuring the horizontal difference of vertical magnetic field can effectively detect not only the pipe under transmitter but also adjacent ones. The width of response curves also indicates higher resolving ability of horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic field.
The behaviour of buried rigid pipe under embankment is analysed by a linear finite element program to study the influence of variation of the geometry of soil-conduit pipe system and elastic modulus of soil on the pipe response. The geometry of the system considered includes the thickness of pipe, the height of embankment, and the width arid the depth of trench. The normal contact pressure distribution around the pipe and the vertical load on the pipe are modelled by a multiple linear regression. And the vertical load on the pipe computed by Marston-Spangles Theory Is generally larger than that by finite element analysis. The settiement ratio in Marston-Spangler Theory is found to be variable for various for various of all factors mentioned above.
The robot for narrow space is used in searching, investigating or cleaning. Up to now variety of researches on in-pipe robots have been introduced. However it is still hard to overcome vertical or curved passage. In most cases of narrow space robots are able to travel just aimed diameter which was selected when those are developed. Also, a large percentage of robots are not able to detect the configuration of pipe or circumstance. In this paper we present a robot called PAROYSⅡ for narrow space with vertical and curved passage. This proposed robot is not affected at all to variance of pipes, vertical or horizontal passages, curved pipes, projecting parts and parallel planes. In addition to that, it will perceive the internal configuration of pipe and terrain, which will be not only available to control navigating scheme by itself, but also mappable about the passage which the robot traveled. Core points in the design and structure are introduced and preliminary verification is given.
