  • The objective of this study is to analyze the deformational characteristics of a high-vacuum insulation panel that is evacuated to eliminate significant gas-phase conductance through its thickness. The panel is composed of a metal envelope and low thermal conductance spacers. The problem is very challenging because several nonlinearities are involved concurrently. Not only are various finite element models such as triangular, rectangular, beam and circular plate models used to simulate the panel, but also several finite element programs are used to solve the problem based on the characteristics of the finite element model. The numerical results indicate that the effect of the diameter of the spacer on the vertical deformation of the plate panel is negligibly small. The parameter that mainly influences the maximum sag is the spacing between the spacers. The maximum vertical deformation of the panel can be predicted for a practical range of the spacing between the spacers and the thickness of the plate. Compared with the numerical results obtained by the finite element models and the experimental tests, they have a good agreement. The results are represented in both tabular and graphical forms. In order to make the results useful, a curve fitting technique has been applied to predict the maximum deformation of the panel with various parameters. Moreover, the panel was suggested to be a "smart" structure based on thermal effect.

  • In soft ground the settlement criterion usually governs. Therefore, it is very important not only reasonable assessment of the allowable bearing capacity of the soil but also reasonable assessment of settlement. In the previous studies by many other researchers, load concentration ratio and settlement reduction factor are usually proposed for estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles. In the previous studies, the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as composite ground and the analysis is performed with in the basis of this assumption. However, the lateral deformation of granular compaction pile could not be considered and only the relative vertical strength between pile and soils could be considered in the analysis. In this study, a method adapting the Tresca failure criterion is proposed for calculating settlement of granular compaction pile. Proposed method can be considered the strength of pile material, pile diameter, installing distance of pile and the deformation behavior of vertical and horizontal directions of pile. In the presented study, large-scale field load test is performed and the results are described. Also, predictions of settlements from the proposed method are compared with the results of the load test. In addition, a series of parametric study is performed and the design parameters are analyzed.

  • Quantification of the influence of the fracture of thick magmatic rock (TMR) on the behavior of its overlying strata is a prerequisite to the understanding of the deformation behavior of the earth's surface in deep mining. A three-dimensional numerical model of a special geological mining condition of overlying TMR was developed to investigate the overburden movement and fracture law, and compare the influence of the occurrence horizon of TMR. The research results show that the movement of overlying rock was greatly affected by the TMR. Before the fracture of TMR, the TMR had shielding and controlling effects on the overlying strata, the maximum vertical and horizontal displacement values of overlying strata were 0.68 m and 0.062 m. After the fracture, the vertical and horizontal displacements suddenly increased to 3.06 m and 0.105 m, with an increase of 350% and 69.4%, respectively, and the higher the occurrence of TMR, the smaller the settlement of the overlying strata, but the wider the settlement span, the smaller the corresponding deformation value of the basin edge (the more difficult the surface to crack). These results are of tremendous importance for the control of rock strata and the revealing of surface deformation mechanism under TMR mining conditions in mines.

  • In the previous study(1), the finite element method was used for the vertical vibration analysis of suspension bridge considering the effects of the shear deformation and the rotary inertia under moving load. This study firstly performs the eigenvalue analysis for the free vertical vibration of suspension bridge using FEM analysis. Next the equations of motion considering interaction between suspension bridge and vehicles/train are derived using mode superposition method. And dynamic analysis was performed using the Newmark $\beta$ Method. Finally through the numerical examples, the dynamic responses of bridges by this study are investigated.

  • There are still some key problems having to be solved in theory and technique applications when GPS is used to monitor the vertical deformation of ground with high precision. Utilizing the GPS technology to monitor the deformation of the land subsidence and ground fissure in Xi'an, this paper puts forward advice that the datum frame of GPS network has significant influence on the precision and accuracy of the vertical deformation results by some research. The co-authors make some theoretical study of the datum error and practice by establishing the datum error models, especially the influence of scale and azimuth datum errors on GPS monitoring network. Then the datum frame design methods and arithmetic of GPS monitoring network are presented and have taken a good effect.

  • An analytical approach is presented to investigate the deformation characteristics of billets in a continuous billet mill using power driven horizontal stands and idle vertical stands. The analysis is validated by comparison to the experimental results in a previously published work. The analytical results have shown that, apart from the problems of slip and buckling of billet, there are some shortcomings involved in this method. Compared to conventional rolling with all driven stands, the roll load for idle vertical stands and the rolling torque for horizontal stands are almost doubled. The billet is severely stressed within the roll-bite of idle vertical stands and the overall rolling power has increased by one third of that for conventional rolling. Theseshortcomings impair the feasibility of industrial application of idle vertical stand rolling method.

  • Dynamic analysis method is Presented for analyzing rectangular liquid storage structures excited by horizontal and vertical ground motions. The irrotational motion of invicid and incompressible ideal fluid in rigid rectangular liquid storage structures subjected to horizontal and vertical ground motions and the motion of fluid induced by structural deformation are expressed by analytic solutions. Analysis methods are obtained by applying analytic solutions of the fluid motion to finite element equation of the structural motion. The fluid-structure interaction effect is reflected into the coupled equation as added fluid mass matrix. The free surface sloshing motion, hydrodynamic pressure acting on the wall and structural behavior due to horizontal and vertical ground motions are obtained by the presented method.

  • Recently, as steel structures become higher and more long-spanned, application of high-strength steels is increasing gradually. However, criteria and example for design of high-strength steel are not built up. exiting criteria for structural steels is not proper for economical design of high-strength steel. Moreover, exiting criteria will be decrease the fatigue performance of steel bridge using high-strength steel. Therefore, criterion for application of high-strength steel must be established. In this paper, the behavior of plate girder using high-strength vertical stiffeners was clarified by carrying out layer elastic-plastic finite element analysis using finite deformation theory. In order to optimize the design and construction of plate girder using high-strength vertical stiffener, criterion for application of high-strength vertical stiffener is proposed.

  • Load tests for ten small-scale foundation models combined with geotextile and sand mat were conducted to study the effect of geotextile, sand mat, and foundation types on deformation of foundation soils. In addition, the experimental results were compared with those obtained from numerical analysis using a software program. The main conclusions were summarized as follows : 1. The restraint effect on GIT is more outstanding on the lateral displacement than on the vertical one. 2. The only use of SIM has better effect for the restraint of lateral displacement than vertical ogle. 3. The use of both SIM and GIT are required for the restraint of lateral and vertical displacement.

  • Based on the energy-variational principle, a coupling vibration analysis model of high-speed railway simply supported beam bridge-track structure system (HSRBTS) was established by considering the effect of shear deformation. The vibration differential equation and natural boundary conditions of HSRBTS were derived by considering the interlayer slip effect. Then, an analytic calculation method for the natural vibration frequency of this system was obtained. By taking two simply supported beam bridges of high-speed railway of 24 m and 32 m in span as examples, ANSYS and MIDAS finite-element numerical calculation methods were compared with the analytic method established in this paper. The calculation results show that two of them agree well with each other, validating the analytic method reported in this paper. The analytic method established in this study was used to evaluate the natural vibration characteristics of HSRBTS under different interlayer stiffness and length of rails at different subgrade sections. The results show that the vertical interlayer compressive stiffness had a great influence on the high-order natural vibration frequency of HSRBTS, and the effect of longitudinal interlayer slip stiffness on the natural vibration frequency of HSRBTS could be ignored. Under different vertical interlayer stiffness conditions, the subgrade section of HSRBTS has a critical rail length, and the critical length of rail at subgrade section decreases with the increase in vertical interlayer compressive stiffness.
