A Numerical Study on Effective Smoke-Control System of a Rescue Station in a Tunnel Fire (터널내 열차 화재시 효과적인 구난역 제연 설비를 위한 수치 해석 연구)

  • In designing smoke-control system of rescue station in train tunnel, a purpose is to prevent a disaster by proposing the jet fan operation together with smoke-control curtain in tunnel fire. This study has investigated the relationship of the Heat Release Rate(HRR) and a adequate ventilation velocity to control the fire propagation in tunnel fire, and has improved the effect of the smoke-control curtain on preventing the flow of pollutants. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulations with ST AR-CD(ver 3.24) were carried out on predicting the fire spreading and the flow of pollutants, considering jet fan operations and effect of smoke-control curtain. Our simulation domain is the full scale model of the 'DAEGWALLYEONG' 1st tunnel. The results represent that ventilation operation can control the fire spreading and pollutants effectively to prevent a disaster.

An Experimental Study of Smoke Movement in Tunnel Fires According to Ventilation Method (터널화재시 환기방식에 따른 연기거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, reduced-scale experiments were conducted to analyze smoke movement in tunnel fires according to vepntilation method. The 1/20 scale experiments were carried out under the Froude scaling using gasoline pool fires ranging from 6.6 to 10 cm in diameter corresponding to total heat release rate from 0.714 to 2.5 kW. Temperatures near the ceiling were lowered by installing the vent, and much lowered by operating fan compared wiht tile case without vent. In case of forced ventilation, the exhaust fan was more effective than the intake fan. Vertical temperatures at the upper part of the tunnel were also lowered by installing the vent. But, when suction fan was operated, temperatures at the lower part of the tunnel were higher than that without vent.

  • This study represents the effective fire and smoke control in the case of fire in deep underground tunnels, even if the exhaust system can be calculated, the optimal smoke capacity can be determined by establishing technical standards for the transverse ventilation system focusing on the design as a basis for deriving the parameters for utilization. Numerical analyses were performed using the FDS program as a function of the unsteady flow in a deep underground tunnel fire. The analysis results were calculated within 250 m smoke using an inside wind velocity of 0m/s when the capacity of smoke was exhausted, $80m^3/s$, whereas in case of an internal wind velocity of 3m/s, the capacity of smoke exhaust was $197.1m^3/s$, showing an approximately 2.5 fold increase.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the effects that presence, installation number and capacity of ventilation vent and presence of multiple fire sources have on the behaviour of smoke temperature induced by vehicle fire in road tunnel. Six types of scenarios were assumed and FDS was ran to simulate them. As the number of ventilation vents increases, the smoke temperature are calculated to be reduced, but it is shown that effects exerted by two ventilation vents are almost similar to ones by three ventilation vents. Capacity of ventilation vent has a greater impact on the reduction of smoke temperature than installation number of ventilation vents. Smoke temperatures computed for all scenarios except for scenario No. 1 (without ventilation vent) and scenario No. 6 (with multiple fire sources) above fire source are analyzed to be under $400^{\circ}C$ and it means that the radiation of smoke layer above fire source doesn't induce the ignition of materials around fire source.

  • By investigating a series of catastrophic tunnel fires, this research aims to evaluate the fire resistance design method as applied to tunnel structures in Korea. It is shown that the current strategy is oriented towards smoke control and ventilation to reduce the loss of life. As structural collapse is not regarded, a general guide is proposed to obtain the fire safety.

An Experimental Study of Smoke Movement in Tunnel Fires with Natural Ventilation (터널 화재시 자연 배기에 의한 연기 거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, reduced-scale experiments were conducted to understand smoke movements in tunnel fires with the natural ventilation. The 1/20 scale experiments were conducted under the Froude scaling since the smoke movement in tunnels is governed by buoyancy force. Three cases of experiments, in which a natural vent location varied from 1 m, 2 m and 3 m from the fire source symmetrically, were conducted in order to evaluate the effect of the position of ventilation systems on smoke movement. In case of a poo1 whose diameter is 4.36 cm, the temperature of smoke layer passed through the vent was maintained 7~$8^{\circ}c$ less than that of smoke layer without a vent. In case of a pool whose diameter is 5.23 cm, the average velocity passed through the vent was decreased when it was close to the fire source. And the maximum delay time was 3.86s. In CASE 1, the ceiling temperature was decreased by approximately 8$^{\circ}C$ and the vertical temperature was decreased by approximately $7^{\circ}c$. In CASE 2, both ceiling and vertical temperature wert decreased by $3^{\circ}c$ and in CASE 3, they were decreased by $2^{\circ}c$ each. It was confirmed that the thickness of smoke layer was maintained uniformly under the 25% height of tunnel through the visualized smoke flow by a laser sheet and the digital camcoder.

  • Numerical study were performed to analyze for fire safety in railway tunnel with forced ventilation vents. For the condition of train fires with heat release rate of 30 MW, unsteady three dimensional analysis were carried out to investigate the effects of smoke movements, the heat transfer and $CO_2$ concentrations and in double track tunnel with two vents. Among three operation modes of forced ventilations at two vents, the exhaust-exhaust mode of the vent represents the best performance for the evacuation of passengers to avoid the fire.

  • In this study, experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of ventilation equipment in underground fires. Two type of Ventilators were used in experiments. Experiments were carried out using ethanol square pool fire. Maximum heat release rate was about 460kW. Visibility and temperature distribution were evaluated according to mechanical ventilation. In blower type ventilation, visibility was increased and temperature was lowered.

An Experimental Study on the Effect of Ventilation Velocity on the Burning Rate in Longitudinal Ventilation Tunnel Fires (종류식 배연 터널 화재시 배연속도가 연소율에 미치는 영향에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, the 1/20 reduced-scale experiment using Froude scaling were conducted to investigate the effect of longitudinal ventilation velocity on the burning rate in tunnel fires. The methanol pool fires with heat release rate ranging from 2.02 kW to 6.15 kW and the n-heptane pool fires with heat release rate ranging from 2.23 kW to 15.6 kW were used. The burning rate of fuel was obtained by measuring the fuel mass at the load cell. The temperature distributions were observed by K-type thermocouples in order to investigate smoke movement. The ventilation velocity in the tested tunnel was controlled by inverter of the wind tunnel. In methanol pool fire, the increase in ventilation velocity reduces the burning rate. On the contrary in n-heptane pool fire, the increase in ventilation velocity induces large burning rate. The reason for above conflicting phenomena lies on the difference of burning rate. In methanol pool fire, the cooling effect outweighs the supply effect of oxygen to fire plume, and in n-heptane pool vice versa.
