  • Swirling flows inside a swirl mixing chamber are investigated for simple configuration where swirl is produced by a tangential entry type swirl generator. The flow downstream of the swirl generator has been quantified by measurements two velocity components and their corresponding mean values along axial and radial direction using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). The mass flow rate of the tangential entry is increased in order to study their effect on the flow field. From the measurement profile of velocity and vorticity, flow mixing characteristics in a swirl mixing chamber are evaluated.

  • The article presents a parametric study on geometrical design optimization for coupling the joint between a large exhaust air chimney and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) shield for gas turbine electricity generator. We conducted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations on hydraulic diameters of waveguide below cutoff(WBC) ranges 800mm~1025mm, the connection distance ranges 150~450mm, and exhaust gas flow velocities at 15, 20, and 25m/s. The results show that the diameter of main chimney, connection distance, and exhaust gas velocity had impacts on flow stream at the EMP shield. To provide a fully developed stream line at three different flow velocity cases, the WBC diameter and distance of connection should be larger than 1050mm and longer than 300mm, respectively.

  • Flow mechanism around air flow sensor of electronic control engine, especially Karman vortex type, was investigated experimentally. The two-dimensional flow characteristics in the intermediate wake region behind a triangular vortex-generator respectively apex forward facing, apex backward facing and vertical flat plates following after apex forward facing(i.e vortex-flowmeter) were investigated at Reynolods number of $ReH=1.4\times10^4$; H is the width of a triangular vortex-generator. The vortex shedding frequency for wide Reynolds number from $7\times10^3$ to $2.1\times10^4$ was also surveyed. The velocity component was measured by X-type hot wire anemometer at 8H downstream from the bluff body. The coherent structure of the intermediate wake behind a bluff body was obtained by conditional phase average technique. As a result, it was verified that the vertical flat plates following after apex forward triangular vortex-generator make not only more linear relation between free stream velocity and vortex shedding frequency but also more periodic vortex in the vicinity of the center of wake.

  • In this study, the system which can make the generator's output voltage more stable by using the inverter in terms of PWM method, is designed It is one of the method reducing velocity of the wind in the process of the wind power generation. Thus, in this system, it is necessary to use a excellent current control inverter. So pulse with modulation method with a high-speed switching element is introduced to control the output current. And also, in order to get a fast response when the standard current generated by the vector control algorithm is supplied with the generator, the output control system with the fast response character and the best current control character is suggested. In this way, the result from the introduction of the control system is that a response character to the changable velocity of the wind is excellent, causing the remarkable reduction of the percentage of the harmonic and the outstanding stability of the variation of the output voltage.

  • Numerical analysis on the three-dimensional laminar flows (Re=1000) and heat transfer in a rectangular channel with punched longitudinal vortex generator have been conducted to explore the heat transfer enhancement and the combined effect of the angle of attack ${\alpha}$ and the lovour angle ${\beta}$. Rectangular winglets have been used as vortex generators. Velocity and temperature fields and spanwise averaged Nu and friction factor were presented. Enhancement of heat transfer and flow loss penalty are evidenced. The results show performance characteristics allowing a reduction in heat transfer surface area of 62% for fixed heat duty and for fixed pumping power compared with that of channel flow without vortex generator. However, adding lovour angle to the vortex generator shows no positive effect on the heat transfer enhancement.

  • To investigate the group plugging effect the fluid-elastic instability analysis has been performed on various column and row number of the KSNP steam generator lutes. This study compares the stability ratio of the plugged tube with that of the intact one. The information on the thermal-hydraulic data of the steam generator have been obtained by using the ATHOS3-MOD1 code with and without the thermal energy transfer at the plugged region. Both of the boundary conditions of hot-leg temperature and feedwater mass flow rate are fixed for this investigation. From the results of this study the stability ratios inside the group plugging zone are decreased slightly. At the outside of group plugging zone, however, most of the stability ratios tend to be increased.

  • Swirling flows are related to the spiral motion in the tangential direction in addition to the axial and radial direction using several swirl generators. These type of flows are used in combustion chambers to improve flame stability, heat exchanger to enhance heat transfer coefficients, agricultural spraying machines and some vertical pipes to move slurries or transport of materials. However, only a few studies three dimensional velocity profiles in a vertical pipe have been reported. In this present paper, 3 dimension particle image velocimetry(PIV) technique was employed to measure the velocity profiles in water along a vertical circular pipe with Reynolds number from 6000 to 13,000. A tangential inlet condition was used as the swirl generator to produce the required flow. The velocities were measured with swirling flow in the water along the test section using the PIV technique.

  • A point-mesh type corona system has been well used as a ionic wind blower. However this type corona system suffers from its lower ionic wind generation, because of its lower on-set and breakdown voltages of its very sharp needle point corona electrode. This means that the point corona electrode must act both as an effective ion-generator and a very higher electric field producer in the discharge airgap in order to generate higher ionic wind velocity. In this paper, a cylinder-mesh type discharge system as a ionic wind generator is proposed and investigated. The cylindrical corona electrode can produce many ions from its sharpened edge, and the corona on-set and breakdown voltages are very higher than those of the needle point corona electrode. As a result, this type cylindrical corona electrode might generate a higher ionic wind than the needle point corona electrode.

  • Density and velocity perturbations in scales most relevant for the first galaxy formation are strongly affected by large-scale density perturbations, velocity-divergence perturbations and the baryon-cold dark matter (CDM) streaming velocities. Even at redshifts as high as z~200, this mode-mode coupling imprints a significant impact on the small-scale perturbations, at the wavenumber k >${\sim}100Mpc^{-1}$, as was calculated in our recent work. This implies that cosmological initial conditions based on the usual linear theory is no longer valid in these scales. We present a new cosmological initial condition generator, BCCOMICS, which generates initial conditions for the cold dark matter (CDM) and baryons in scales most relevant for the first galaxy formation. BCCOMICS is based on the linear perturbation theory including the mode-mode coupling terms, and generates cosmological initial conditions for the SPH-basded code GADGET and the AMR-based code ENZO. We also present our preliminary result on the cosmic variance of the first galaxy formation, studied by using BCCOMICS.
