  • A fundamental structural design consideration for a vehicle is the overall vibration characteristics in bending and torsion. Vibration characteristics of a vehicle system are mainly influenced by dynamic stiffness of the vehicle body structure and material and physical properties of the components attached to the vehicle body structure. The first step in satisfying this requirement is to obtain a satisfactory dynamic model of the vehicle structure. In this paper. modeling techniques of the vehicle components are presented and the effects of the vehicle components on the vibration characteristics of the vehicle are investigated,

  • In this paper, an analytical and experimental study was performed in order to determine the effects of interaction between vehicle and structure. Results presented in the paper show that analytical method including moving load effect can investigate the trend of structural response due to dynamic interaction between vehicle and structure. The wheel tracking machine fitted with 2-axle test vehicle can demonstrate more accurate dynamic interaction between vehicle and structure than the wheel tracking machine fitted without 2-axle test vehicle.

  • In general low frequency vibration characteristics like an idleshake is mainly influeced by pillar section properties and joints. So the design technique development of vehicle pillar structures is required to initial design and vehicle development stage. In this paper to develop pillar structure design technique considering low frequency vibration characteristics, strain energy method, design sensitivity analysis method, and design optimization method using commercial finite element analysis program and optimization program are presented.

  • Recently the objective of vehicle design was focused on the crash safety and the energy saving. For the energy saving vehicle structures must be light weight, but for the crash safety some energy absorbing elements must be added. In this paper hybrid structure which consists of a steel and a FRP was studied on the energy absorption characteristics under the impact load by finite element method. Test results of the other researchers were compared with that of computer simulation on this simple hybrid structure. Side rail of vehicle front structure was replaced with hybrid materials for the application of the vehicle structure. 35mph frontal crash simulation was performed with hybrid structure and with conventional steel structure. By the adoption of hybrid structure, the improvement of energy absorption characteristics and reduction of weight was observed under the frontal crash simulation.

  • This paper presents the pillar section optimization technique considering the reliability of the vehicle body structure consisted of complicated thin-walled panels. The response surface method is utilized to obtain the response surface models that describe the approximate performance functions representing the system characteristics on the section properties of the pillar and on the mass and the natural frequencies of the vehicle B.I.W. The reliability-based design optimization on the pillar sections Is performed and compared with the conventional deterministic optimization. The FORM is applied for the reliability analysis of the vehicle body structure. The developed optimization system is applied to the pillar section design considering the fundamental natural frequencies of passenger car body structure. By applying the proposed RBDO technique, it can be possible to optimize the pillar sections considering the reliability that engineers require.

  • A fundamental structural design consideration for a vehicle system is the overall vibration characteristics in bending and torsion. Vibration characteristics of such vehicle system are mainly influenced by the static and dynamic stiffness of the vehicle body structure and also by the material and physical properties of the components attached to the vehicle body structure. In this paper, modeling techniques for the vehicle components are presented and the flexibility and mass effects of the components for the vibration characteristics of the vehicle are investigated. The $1^{st}$ torsional frequency is increased by attaching windshields to the B.I.W. (body-in-white), but the $1^{st}$ bending frequency is decreased by the mass effect. And also, the natural frequencies of the vehicle are large decreased by attaching bumpers, seats, doors, trunk-lid etc. But, suspension system rarely affects the natural frequencies of the vehicle. The study shows thai the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle system can be effectively predicted in the initial design stage.

  • In recent years, rapid-increasing market share of compact cars and SUVs has brought for both consumer and automaker to pay more attention on crash compatibility between the compact passenger vehicles and the light trucks (i.e., Pickups and SUVs). Vehicle compatibility regarding both self and partner protection in frontal crash of different class vehicles is one of hot issues in vehicle safety. Furthermore, it is expected that the amendment of UNECE-Regulation 94 to implement compatibility issues in couple of coming years. In this study, conceptual design of compatibility compliant frontal vehicle structure which subjects to improve? the distribution of frontal crash loading and structural engagement between vehicles is introduced. The effects of proposed vehicle structure on both possible candidates (i.e. FWRB, FWDB and PDB) for a compatibility evaluation test procedure and car-to-car crash are also investigated.

  • The global stiffnesses and vibration characteristics of vehicle structures are mainly influenced by local stiffnesses of the joint structures consisted of complicated thin-walled panels. In this paper, the parametric study for the stiffnesses of the center pillar-roof rail joint of vehicle structure is performed through the linear static analysis. The analysis result shows that the reinforcement panel much affects the joint stiffness of out-plane direction (i.e., z-direction). And also, the flange radius and width of the joint structure much affect the Joint stiffness of out-plane direction. The study shows that vehicle joint stiffnesses can be effectively determined in designing vehicle structure through the parametric study.
