The role of Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles(UAVs) has been increasing significantly in both military and civilian operations. Many complex systems, such as UAVs, are difficult to model accurately because they exhibit nonlinearity and show variations with time. Therefore, the control system must address the issues of uncertainty, nonlinearity, and complexity. Hence, identification of the mathematical model is an important process in controller design. In this paper, attitude dynamics identification of UAV is investigated. Using the flight data, nonlinear state space model for attitude dynamics of UAV is derived and verified. Real time simulation results show that the model dynamics match experimental data.

In this paper real-time estimation methods for identifying the tire-road friction coefficient are presented. Taking advantage of the Magic Formula Tire Model, the similarity technique and the specific model for the vehicle dynamics, a reduced order observer/filtered-regressor-based method is proposed. The Proposed method is evaluated on simulations of a full-vehicle model with an eight state nonlinear vehicle/transmission model and nonlinear suspension model. It has been shown through simulations that it is possible to estimate the tire-road friction from measurements of engine rpm, transmission output speed and wheel speeds using the proposed identification method. The proposed method can be used as a useful option as a part of vehicle collision warning/avoidance systems and will be useful in the implementation of a warning algorithm since the tire-road friction can be estimated only using RPM sensors.

Super computers has been utilized to carry out vehicle dynamics in real time. This research propose an implicit integra-tion method for vehicle state variables. Newton chord method is empolyed to solve the equations of motion and con-straints. The equations of motion and constraints are formulated such that the Jacobian matrix for Newton chord method is needed to be computed only once for a dynamic analysis. Numerical experiments showed that the Jacobian matrix generat-ed at the initial time could have been utilized for the Newton chord iterations throughout simulations under various driving conditions. Convergence analysis of Newton chord method with the proposed Jacobian updating method is carried out. The proposed algorithm yielded accurate solutions for a prototype vehicle multibody model in realtime on a 400 MHz PC compatible.

Power steering systems play an important role for the vehicle handling characteristics and driver's steering center feeling during straightforward driving situation. In this paper, the rotary valve, the main component of power steering systems, is modeled and analyzed, and is combined with a 3-DOF(degree of freedom) lateral dynamics model of passenger cars to examine the effects of design parameters on the vehicle steering characteristics. The results can be applied to the development of advanced power steering systems for passenger cars such as electronically-con-trolled power steering system.

This paper presents a novel methodology for estimating vehicle ego-motion, i.e. tri-axis linear velocities and angular velocities by using stereo vision sensor and 2G1Y sensor (longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate). The estimated ego-motion information can be utilized to predict future ego-path and improve the accuracy of 3D coordinate of obstacle by compensating for disturbance from vehicle movement representatively for collision avoidance system. For the purpose of incorporating vehicle dynamic characteristics into ego-motion estimation, the state evolution model of Kalman filter has been augmented with lateral vehicle dynamics and the vanishing point estimation has been also taken into account because the optical flow radiates from a vanishing point which might be varied due to vehicle pitch motion. Experimental results based on real-world data have shown the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in view of accuracy.

Magnetically levitated (Maglev) vehicles maintain a constant air gap between guideway and car bogie, and thereby achieves non-contact riding. Since the straightness and the flatness of the guideway directly affect the stability of levitation as well as the ride comfort, it is necessary to monitor the status of the guideway and to alert the train operators to any abnormal conditions. In order to develop a signal processing algorithm that extracts guideway irregularities from sensor data, virtual testing using a simulation model would be convenient for analyzing the exact effects of any input as long as the model describes the actual system accurately. Simulation model can also be used as an estimation model. In this paper, we develop a state-space dynamic model of a maglev vehicle system, running on the guideway that contains jumps. This model contains not only the dynamics of the vehicle, but also the descriptions of the power amplifier, the anti-aliasing filter and the sampling delay. A test rig is built for the validation of the model. The test rig consists of a small-scale maglev vehicle, tracks with artificial jumps, and various sensors measuring displacements, accelerations, and coil currents. The experimental data matches well with those from the simulation model, indicating the validity of the model.

The study is to develop a foundation design for a railway vehicle simulator using a scaled model. Although a scaled simulator is limited to manipulate the dynamics of a full-size railway vehicle, it has been known to have an advantage, since a scaled model could provide the fundamental dynamic behavior within a limited space of a laboratory facility and with a low operation cost while an experiment is conducted. This study is to propose a design strategy for a simulator so that a small scaled roller rig could be fabricated in a laboratory based on the design philosophy. The data obtained from the scale model is also experimentally investigated in conjunction with appropriate non-dimensional analysis so that the output results should be interpreted to the railway vehicle.

A simulation program for vehicle dynamic analysis was developed. The Cartesisn coordinate system was used for translational motion and the Euler angle system was used for rotational motion. A three dimensional multi-wheeled vehicle model and equations of motion were derived. Also static equilibrium analysis was added for initial vehicle condition setting. The program user can describe the exact characteristics of suspension spring force and damping force in the user subroutine. A wheel-ground contact model which represents geometrical effect was developed. Two cases of simulation for 16 D.O.F. vehicle model were conducted to validate the developed program by comparing the simulation results with the experimental data.

Electric Power Steering (EPS) mechanism has become widely equipped in passenger vehicle due to the environmental consciousness and higher fuel efficiency. This paper describes the development of co-simulation technique and simulation integration technique of EPS control system with dynamic vehicle model. A full vehicle model interacted with EPS control algorithm is concurrently simulated on a single bump road condition. Dynamic responses of vehicle chassis and steering system resulting from road surface impact are evaluated and compared with proving ground experimental data. The comparisons will show reasonable agreement on tie-rod load. rack displacement, handle-wheel torque and tire center acceleration. This developed simulation capability can be used for EPS performance evaluation and calibration as well as for vehicle handling performance integration and synthesis.
