  • Estuarine wetlands, which form a distinctive brackish water zone, serve as important habitats for organisms that have adapted to and thrive in this environment. Nonetheless, excessive development and utilization result in artificial disruptions that alter the distinctive functions and attributes of estuarine wetlands. To collect the basic data for the conservation of estuarine wetlands with excellent ecosystems, we investigated the vegetation distribution characteristics and biota status of the Taehwagang River Estuarine Wetland. Data from vegetation surveys have shown that 25 plant communities of six physiognomic vegetation types, including willow vegetation, lotic and lentic herbaceous vegetation, floating/submerged vegetation. In the upper reaches, where topographical diversity was high, various types of wetland vegetation were distributed. In terms of biodiversity, a total of 696 species, including 7 endangered wildlife species, were identified. Due to good ecological connectivity, tidal rivers are formed, brackish water species including various functional groups are distributed around this section. The inhabitation of various water birds, such as diving and dabbler ducks, were confirmed according to the aquatic environment of each river section. The collection of ecological information of the Taehwagang River Estuarine Wetland can be used as a framework for establishing the basis for conservation and management of the estuarine ecosystem and support policy establishment.

  • Some indices of species of the Arundinella hirta communities in Cheolwon area were studied and the following results were obtained. The vegetational date was analyzed from six grass stands selected with the distance away from the DMZ in Cheolwon area. Species diversity was higher in the stand away from the DMZ than in that neat to it. All six stands are not considered to be free of disturbance. Species composition of the stands might be related to the degree of disturbance. It can be said that the destruction of the vegetation by periodical fire or cutting simplifies the species composition. In the rear district the human inter ference is supposed to be more frequent. But it is supposed to be slight in near the DMZ and that the degree of disturbance is not so destructive. This could be the explanation of high diversity in these stands.

  • This study was carried out for the purpose of understanding the situation of the urban forest and presenting basic data bases for a proper management plan through the analysis of forest vegetation and soil characteristics. In three representative urban forests of Deajeon, we analyzed the differences of vegetation and soil properties in each geological location. The indices of ecological health such as Species Diversity and Maximum Species Diversity are increasing in the order of Namseon Park, Wolpyung Park and Mt. Bomun; the first is in the center of the city, the second is well-conserved inner-city park and the third is in the border of the city. In the soil analysis of Namseon Park where human disturbance is strong, the surface fuel bed was very thin just 0.5cm and the soil was harder than the other two urban forests, the soil hardness was $0.5{\sim}3.7kg/cm^2$. All three urban forests showed low $pH_{1:5}$ under 5.0 except Robinia pseudo-acasia association of Wolpyung and low exchangeable cation level. These results say that the urban forests of Deajeon have been being acidified severely and the eluviation of exchangeable cation is proceeding. The organic matter and the available phosphate level was lower than the average level of Korean forest. It means that nutrition supply is not sufficient. In Daejeon urban forests, the management plan of urban forest is necessary according to the analysis result of vegetation and soil.

  • To investigate and analyze the change of the vegetation community structure between the severely damaged time (in 1980) and the restored time (in 1987) by the pine gall midge. Thecodoplosis japonensis, four plots with five subplots were sampled at Gwangju-gun of Kyongki-do. The total number of woody species per $500m^2$ changed 39 in 1980 to 41 in 1987. According to the damage restoring, the importance value of the genus Quercus as substituting in the severely damaged forest showed a slight decrease but the importance value of Carpinus laxiflora, Sorbus alnifolia and Styrax obassia increased. As to changes of the vegetation community structure for seven years, the diversity of vegetation structure has increased. The similarity indices between 1980 and 1987 were 52.9% and 51.9% in the understory and shrub stratum, respectively.

  • We evaluated the restoration effect by introducing willows as a means of controlling invasions of giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida L.) on a riparian site. Our preliminary survey demonstrated that a problematic exotic species, giant ragweed and the representative riparian species, Salix koreensis are in competitive exclusive relationship. We planted willows at 1 m intervals on the bank of the Dongmun stream at Munsan, Paju, in Central Western Korea as an experimental restoration practice. We installed two 50 m $\times$ 5 m sized restored and non-restored for this experimental study. The non-restored plots were located on river banks, which were covered with concrete blocks and left in itself without any treatment. The height of willow was measured after each of three consecutive growing seasons and compared with the height of the giant ragweed. Although the height of Salix gracilistyla did not achieve the height of the giant ragweed, the height of S. koreensis surpassed that of giant ragweed in the third year after introduction. The results were also reflected in the relative light intensity on the herb layer of willow stand, and thereby the relative light intensities of stands, which were dominated by S. koreensis or restored by introducing S. koreensis, 1.99 $\pm$ 0.33 (%, mean $\pm$ SD) and 1.92 $\pm$ 0.50 (%, mean $\pm$ SD), respectively were lower than those in the stands treated by S. gracilistyla, 3.01 $\pm$ 0.43 (%, mean $\pm$ SD). The giant ragweed stands receive full sunlight as there are no any vegetation layers higher than the herb layer formed by the giant ragweed. As the result of Detrended Correspondence analysis ordination based on naturally established vegetation, the stands dominated by willows and giant ragweed showed different species composition between both stands. The species composition of the restoratively treated sites resembled the reference sites more than the non-treated sites. The species diversity (H') of the sites restored by introducing S. koreensis and S. gracilistyla was higher than the non-restored site dominated by A. trifida. On the basis of our results, the restoration of riparian vegetation equipped with integrated features could contribute not only to the control of exotic plants including giant ragweed but also to ensure the diversity and stability of riverine ecosystems.

  • The objective of this study were to offer a basis data for application of management of forest resources through grasping of species composition by layer of forest vegetation in the Mt. Geumwon recreational forest. The tree and subtree layer consisted of 27 and 44 species in Mt. Geumwon recreational forest respectively. The importance value of Quercus mongolica (57.1) and Q. serrata (40.4) were highest in the tree layer and that of Acer pseudo-sieboldianum (43.4) was highest in the subtree layer, respectively. The shrub and herb layer was composed of 71 and 69 species, respectively. The value of species diversity ranged from 1.0391 to 1.5403. Evenness ranged from 0.7259 to 0.8320. Dominance was 0.2741 at tree layer, 0.2440 at subtree layer, 0.1680 at shrub layer, and 0.1702 at herb layer, which showed that Mt. Geumwon recreational forest is dominated by a large number of species at all layer. The result of forest vegetation in Mt. Geumwon recreational forest may be utilized as a basic data for application of reasonable ecological management of forest resources.

  • This study aims to classify the biotope types and evaluate its functions for acquiring the basic information which can support the landscape ecological management of the urban forest in the case of the three parks in Daegu metropolitan city and then to analyze vegetation landscape patterns. The biotope classification was mostly divided into 5 to 6 biotope type groups in the high units and 15 to 20 biotope types belong to them and then could know that the more big the park size, the more diverse and large the biotope types and its average area. The biotope grade over the three parks was dominating low rank grade (1 to 3 grade) 72.7% that forest organism is inadequate as live, and high grade (7 to 9 grade) did not appear entirely. Most in Biotope function estimation were appeared less than the middle rank grade and biotope area is bigger, those grade rises and temperature could know that is fallen. Vegetation landscape patterns was very simple because only two kinds of Robinia pseudo-acacia and Quercus acutissima is appeared as the dominated landscape elements in all of the three parks. And also because average area of those elements is generally 1ha or so, there was much problems in consecutiveness of functional role as forest ecosystem component. Conclusively, Ecological landscape management need to improve Biotope diversity and functionality, and it secures ecological minimal area and space linkage.
