The change in vegetation structure along elevational gradients on the southeastern part of Mt. Hallasan was studied. Vegetation data were collected with 59 quadrates located from 16 to 1,565 m with 100 m intervals. Community types were classified using cluster analysis, and species composition and diversity were analyzed along elevational gradients. The vegetation was classified into seven, namely, type 1 Quercus serrata community, type 2 Carpinus tschonoskii community, type 3 Carpinus laxiflora community, type 4 Pinus densiflora community, type 5 Abies koreana community, type 6 Castanopsis sieboldii community, and type 7 Quercus acuta community. The species with a high importance value in tree layer in each elevational zone were C. sieboldii and Q. acuta at 100-600 m; C. laxiflora, Q. serrata, and C. tschonoskii at 700-800 m; P. densiflora at 1,100-1,200 m; and Abies koreana at 1,500-1,600 m. The species diversity indicated higher value at 700-800 m, 1,200-1,300 m and 1,400-1,500 m than at the other elevation.

The purpose of this study is to define the species composition of the soil seed banks at major wetlands in Nakdong river basin and central korea and to investigate how soil seed banks relate to aboveground vegetation and soil texture. In 2005, we sampled seed banks at Baksil reservoir, Jillal marsh, Deapyeng marsh, Hwapo marsh, Upo marsh and Junam reservoir in Nakdong river basin and Osan stream and Amsa-dong in Seoul. The soil seeds were estimated with the emergence method from April to October. Total numbers of species at the seed banks were 33 at Baksil, 18 at Daepyeong, 35 at Jillal, 56 at Upo, 32 at Hwapo, 47 at Osan stream, 54 at Amsa waterside, 31 at Amsa meadow. The species diversity in the soil seed banks of Upo marsh was the highest as 0.95. The community overlap index that compares aboveground with underground vegetation is high in the Upo marsh (0.34), Jilla marsh (0.36), and Osan stream (0.27). Soil texture affected distribution of 8 species, Lindernia procumbens, L. attenuata, Arenaria serpyllifolia, Juncus effusus, Persicaria thunbergii, Eragrostis multicaulis, Cyperus nipponicus, Scirpus fluviatilis. Considering the social and cultural values, soils at Amsa meadow, Hwapo marsh and Osan stream have worth to use for wetland restoration.
To investigate the vegetation structure of mountain ridge from Suryeong to Sosagogae, 10 plots(500$m^2$) set up with random sampling method were surveyed. Three groups, Quercus dentata-Fraxinus rhynchophylla community, Quercus mongolica-Fraxinus rhynchophylla community, Quercus mongolica community, were classified by cluster analysis. Quercus mongolica was found as a major woody plant species in the ridge area from Suryeong to Sosagogae. Quercus dentata and Fraxinus rhynchophylla were occupied partly in lower elevation. Species diversity(H') of investigated groups was ranged from 1.7295∼2.6525 and it was similar to that of the ridge area of the national parks in Baekdudaegan. Rare and endangered species, Rhododendron tschonoskii recorded from the list of the Forest Administration distributed between the rocks on the top of the Sambongsan, the long-term habitat monitoring might be required.
We investigated the moth fauna and monthly changes in moth populations at three sites - Dogapsa, Gyungpodae and Muwisa - in Mt. Wolchul National Park, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. From February to October, 2006, we collected a total of 1677 individuals comprising 348 species in 14 families. Monthly changes in the abundance of species and individuals showed an M-shaped pattern, with the highest peak in June and a second high peak in August. The diversity of the three dominant families (Noctuidae, Geometridae and Pyralidae) at the three sites varied, possibly due to differences in vegetation and other environmental factors. Diversity at Dogapsa was relatively higher than Gyungpodae and Muwisa, but, the fauna at Dogapsa more closely resembled Muwisa than Gyungpodae. 28 species occurred at the same time in all three sites, included the families Geometridae (14 species), Noctuidae (9 species), Pyralidae (2 species), Arctiidae (1 species), Nolidae (1 species), and Limacodidae (1 species). The present study provided baseline information about biodiversity and phenological patterns of moth abundance and permitted evaluation of moth biodiversity as a monitoring tool for vegetation structure and environmental change.
To investigate the vegetation structure of mountain ridge from Nogodan to Goribong, 22 plots(500$m^2$) set up with random sampling method were surveyed Three groups Quercus mongolica-Fraxinus rhynchophylla community. Quercus mongolica- Pinus densinora community. Quercus mongolica community were classified by cluster analysis. Quercus mongolica was found as it major woody plant species in the ridge area from Nogodan to Goribong. And partly in lower elevation was occupied by deciduous broadleaved tree species and Pinus densiflora. In this area, Korean endemic species, Abies koreana was distributed small amounts. Species diversity(H') of investigated group were ranged 0.9274~1.2845 and it was similar to those of the ridgee area of the national parks in Baekdudaegan.
Korean rivers and their surrounding environments have been used excessively for rice production in the past and more recently for construction of urban areas to accomodate the rapidly increasing population. Affected Korean rivers experience dramatic fluctuations in their water levels and have faster currents compared with those in other countries. In order to restore more natural conditions in rivers experiencing such conditions, we employed a partial restoration method, which is designed to achieve physical and biological stability simultaneously. Concrete blocks were introduced to increase the river's physical stability during floods, and terra cottem, a soil enhancer, was used to reduce water loss due to intense heat. These interventions increased the river's ability to hold water and thereby promoted plant growth. This restoration method increased vegetation coverage and species diversity in treated areas, and changed the species composition in treated areas to more closely approximate that of the control site. These results suggest that this method is effective in restoring damaged habitats to more natural conditions.

This study was executed to investigate the vegetation structure and to propose the administration planning of the Royal Ancestor's Shrine. Five sites sampled in the study area with the clumped sampling method. Pinus koraiensis community covered 27.3% and Quercus aliena community 61.5% of total forest area when considering the actual vegetation. This area of environmental impact grade 3 and 4 area covered 46.9% and it should be restored. The ecological diversity, i.e. species diversity and evenness, showed low class, and especially site 2 which was controlled the user's after 1985 showed the lowest value. Pinus koraiensis community which is a dominant species now in the study area shall be succeed to Quercus aliena community. Robinia pseudoacacia at the eastern wall shall be excluded step by step and it shall be replaced with native species gradually. Ailanthus altissima, Populus ${\times}$ albaglandulosa and Styrax japonica which had higher selection invaded conspicuously the bare land. As the administration planning of the study area, Pinus koraiensis and Styrax japonica shall be thinned out gradually and it shall be replaced with Quercus aliena and Acer palmatum.
This research put most emphasis on setting the guidelines for improvement through character analysis of landscape ecology to cope with ecological malfunction of the woodland surrounded in cultivated areas. The results are as follows. 1) As a result of character analysis of the woodland in cultivated area in point of landscape ecology in five case sites, the size of case site 3 is the largest as $3,000m^2$ and it is shown that a colony of pine trees which is valuable in terms of ecological, scientific, historic and cultural senses. 2) As a result of analysis on expansibility of woodland in cultivated area, case site 1 is 0.25, the lowest, flexibility is 4, the highest. In order to improve ecological function in woodland, it is regarded that maintaining curve form rather than straight one. 3) As a result of analysis of morphological diversity, case site 5 shows 1.3, the highest. However, the condition of vegetation and emergence frequency of species indicates low value degree. 4) Based on the result of analysis of landscape ecological character like above, the number of guidelines for the woodland in cultivated area is three and vegetation is four.
This study analyzed the ecological characteristics of the wetland protection area at tthe Nakdong River through vegetation and biota surveys, which showed that brackish water meets fresh water, a unique ecological environment has been created, biodiversity is high, and diverse habitats are distributed. Eleven plant communities, including four woody communities and seven grass communities, are distributed along the coast, and a total of 514 species, including 11 endangered wildlife species, were identified in terms of species diversity. Among them, the species diversity of the Eulsuk-do area was found to be relatively higher than that of other Barreir Islands areas. The presence of a population of Sterna albifrons on Sinja-do and a population of Eremias argus on Jinwo-do, an area outside the boundaries of the wetland protection area, confirmed the conservation value of the wetlands and the need to expand the boundaries of the wetland protection area. It is judged that this information can be used as basic information for a systematic conservation and management plan for the wetland protection area at the Nakdong River Estuary and as basic data to support the establishment of a policy.
This study was conducted to provide a fundamental information for commercial, medical usage and mushroom gene preservation and to investigate the diversity of indigenous mushroom on Bonghwa-Gun. A total of 3 classes 2 subclasses 13 orders 45 families 64 genera and 118 species including saprophytic and ectomycorrhizal fungi was investigated. The mushroooms are classified into 17 families 32 genera and 80 species in Agaricales, 13 families 17 genera and 22 species in Aphllophorales, 2 families 2 genera and 2 species in Heterobasidiomycetes, 9 families 9 genera and 10 species in Gasteromycetidae. There were edible mushroom of 46 species at Moonsu and Chungryang Mountain. The mushroom occurrence was closely related to vegetation and soil environmental conditions.
