In order to improve water quality in the Paldang Lake, a riparian vegetation belt, treatment wetland, and artificial floating island were designed for introduction in the upland field, the estuary of tributaries, and the section of water facing mountainous land, respectively. We synthesized vegetation information collected from a reference river and found that herbaceous, shrubby, and tree vegetation zones tended to be dominated by Phragmites japonica, Phalaris arundinacea, etc.; Salix gracilistyla, S. integra, etc.; and S. koreensis, S. subfragilis, and Morus alba, respectively. In our plan, the herbaceous vegetation zone, which is established on floodplains with a high frequency of disturbance, will be left in its natural state. A shrubby vegetation zone will be created by imitating the species composition of the reference river in the ecotone between floodplain and embankment. A tree vegetation zone will be created by imitating species composition on the embankment slope. In the treatment wetland, we plan to create emerged and softwood plant zones by imitating the species composition of the Zizania latifolia community, the Typha orientalis community, the P. communis community, the S. integra community, and the S. koreensis community. The floating island will be created by restoring Z. latifolia and T. orientalis for water purification purposes.
This study investigated the application of terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to inspect the defects of the vegetated levee. The accuracy of vegetation filtering techniques was compared by applying filtering techniques on photogrammetric point clouds of a vegetated levee generated by terrestrial LiDAR. Representative 10 vegetation filters such as CIVE, ExG, ExGR, ExR, MExG, NGRDI, VEG, VVI, ATIN, and ISL were applied to point cloud data of the Imjin River levee. The accuracy order of the 10 techniques based on the results was ISL, ATIN, ExR, NGRDI, ExGR, ExG, MExG, VVI, VEG, and CIVE. Color filters show certain limitations in the classification of vegetation and ground and classify grass flower image as ground. Morphological filters show a high accuracy of the classification, but they classify rocks as vegetation. Overall, morphological filters are superior to color filters; however, they take 10 times more computation time. For the improvement of the vegetation removal, combined filters of color and morphology should be studied.

Gaining an accurate 3D stream geometry has become feasible with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), which is crucial for better understanding stream hydrodynamic processes. The objective of this study was to investigate series of filters to remove stream vegetation and propose the best method for generating Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) using UAV-based point clouds. A stream reach approximately 500 m of the Bokha stream in Icheon city was selected as the study area. Point clouds were obtained in August 1st, 2023, using Phantom 4 multispectral and Zenmuse L1 for Structure from Motion (SfM) and Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) respectively. Three vegetation filters, two morphological filters, and six composite filters which combined vegetation and morphological filters were applied in this study. The Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) were used to assess each filters comparing with the two cross-sections measured by leveling survey. The vegetation filters performed better in SfM, especially for short vegetation areas, while the morphological filters demonstrated superior performance on LiDAR, particularly for taller vegetation areas. Overall, the composite filters combining advantages of two types of filters performed better than single filter application. The best method was the combination of Progressive TIN (PTIN) and Color Indicies of Vegetation Extraction (CIVE) for SfM, showing the smallest MAE of 0.169 m. The proposed method in this study can be utilized for constructing DTMs of stream and thus contribute to improving the accuracy of stream hydrodynamic simulations.

This study aims to figure out ecological characteristic of natural forests focusing on vegetation as a way of ecological renovation for the restoration of naturalness for golf courses that were constructed in the Country and to present vegetation models and appropriate tree species for the purpose. The study site is P golf club, which is located in Gapyong-gun, Kyeonggi Province. The site is within a forest where the grade from the natural ecology map is the first one and the level from the green index accounts for the eight, thus showing a typical environment for a golf course in terms of location. The location of the site explains a reason for restoration. The major substance of the study is to conduct ecological evaluation of vegetation structures around and inside the golf course and to present a vegetation model. In order to evaluate the ecological characteristics of the vegetation structures, the analysis of the study covered succession stages, multi-layer vegetation structures and species diversity. Plant communities that have high species diversity were selected for the vegetation model and proper density and species were proposed considering the number of species and individuals and distances between trees. The vegetation restoration model targets succession into an oak forest. Within a unit of 100 $m^2$, the recommended model include a tall-tree layer with 11 trees such as Quercus serrata and Quercus mongolica, a sub-tall-tree layer with 12 trees including Quercus mongolica, Quercus serrata, Prunus sargentii, Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Acer pseudo sieboldianum, a shrub layer with 32 trees from 16 species, and a grass layer with a cover rate of 45 %. The proposed vegetation restoration model needs to apply to : 1) damaged natural forests by the construction of golf courses; 2) boundaries between golf courses and surrounding forests; 3) buffer zones; 4) open spaces in between courses; and 5) areas between greens and tees where open spaces are available in a mass. In conclusion, one of the most important factors in presenting a vegetation model for the restoration of naturalness in the golf course and other damaged forests is to provide multi-layer vegetation structures that are composed of native species. As for the specific application for the site, it is recommended to manage the vegetation in such a way that the environment of the site can have a similar environment to the surrounding forest which is expected to succeed into an oaks-dominant one.
Vegetation is an important factor in EIA(Environmental Impact Assessment) and it is assessed according to DGN(Degree of Green Naturality) in EIS(Environmental Impact Statement) preparation. But DGN has room for improvement of assessing vegetation Status. This study introduced NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) for improving status assessment method that subjects to DGN. For the application of NDVI, Landsat TM data of Chunchon on May 2, 1989 and June 1, 1994, and data of Ulsan on November 5, 1984, November 2, 1992 and May 9, 1994 were used. It compared NDVI with DGN according to season and location. The correlation coefficient value for the spring image (1994, 0.7, p=0.01) was proved to be higher than that of autumn (1984, 0.5, p=0.01).

Aeolian dunes are typical sand dunes which are maintained and developed by interactions of earth surface, wind and vegetation. Developing a model which can predict the changing phenomena of these sand dunes is vital in enhancing the efficiency of understanding and management of terrains such as land degradation. In the existing models, however, there is lack of studies on the long - term behaviors of the sand dunes and application to actual topography. Therefore, this study applied the wind-vegetation model considering vegetation to the actual topography and analyzed the applicability of the wind-vegetation model by analyzing the long-term behaviors and comparing them with actual data. Through analysis, study found out that use of wind-vegetation model and data from unmanned aerial vehicle is effective in analyzing the changes of actual dune topography. Except for the boundary, the error of about 1m was generated compared with the change of the actual dune topography.

By the activation of environment-friendly river works, application of vegetation mats is increasing, however, evaluation techniques for hydraulic stability of vegetation mats are not presented. This study is conducted to develop the objective test method for vegetation mats. Two kind of vegetation mats are tested by the real scale experiments, and hydraulic quantities are measured and analyzed to evaluate acting shear stresses. Roughness and shear stress are evaluated by 1 D non-uniform model. After each tests, changes in mat surfaces and sub-soil are evaluated, and from these evaluation, 3 types of mat surface damages and 2 types of sub-soil damages are presented. In the study, the case in which some damages in mat surface don't cause loss of sub-soil, is presented to be in the stable condition. Appling this stable condition and acting shear stresses, permissible shear stresses of vegetation mats are evaluated, and the results show that the reinforced mat with wire netting has more permissible shear stress.

The disaster preventing system using vegetation has been growing in the field of coastal engineering in recent years. To analyze wave and flow fields under nonlinear interactions between tsunami and vegetation, the purpose of this study is to evaluate newly-developed 3-D numerical wave tank including energy dissipation by tsunami-vegetation interaction based on existing N-S solver with porous body model. Comparing numerical results using mean drag coefficient and dynamic drag coefficient due to Reynolds number to existing experimental results it is revealed that computed results considering the dynamic drag coefficient are in good agreement with the laboratory test results for time-domain waveform. In addition, the calculated transmission coefficients of solitary waves in various vegetation densities and incident wave heights are also in good agreement with the experimental values. This confirms the validity and effectiveness of the developed 3-D numerical wave tank with the fluid resistance by vegetation.

This study was conducted on the field application for a method which is currently used. Although the method was performed with experimental knowledge, this study attempted to approach scientific ways through thirty sets of test-bed and three times monitoring limited by control variations for three months. The factors on previous studies are slope location, slope degree, type (roadfill vs. roadcut), aspect, vegetation cover, species, thickness, vertical length, horizontal length, soil type, elevation, erosion, soil-moisture, soil-hardness, pH, and so on. However, the factors of a suitable and significant level are slope degree, type, aspect, thickness, soil-moisture, vertical length and horizontal length in slope revegetation. the results were as follows : As a result of survey on soil types based on the status before construction, the rate of vegetation cover with non-mesh construction in soil areas was better than the rate of vegetation cover with fiber meshes and wire meshes. The rate of vegetation cover with fiber meshes in weathered rocks was better than using wire meshes. The rate of vegetation cover with the wire meshes in blasted rocks was better than using fiber meshes. Also, the factors affecting the rate of vegetation cover presented the number of appearance species, soil-moisture, thickness. this result presented the more appearance species as a positive role, and the lower soil-moisture and the thicker soil as a negative role.

Purpose: The overall objective of this study was to evaluate the vegetation fraction of soybeans, grown under different cropping conditions using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a red, green, and blue (RGB) camera. Methods: Test plots were prepared based on different cropping treatments, i.e., soybean single-cropping, with and without herbicide application and soybean and barley-cover cropping, with and without herbicide application. The UAV flights were manually controlled using a remote flight controller on the ground, with 2.4 GHz radio frequency communication. For image pre-processing, the acquired images were pre-treated and georeferenced using a fisheye distortion removal function, and ground control points were collected using Google Maps. Tarpaulin panels of different colors were used to calibrate the multi-temporal images by converting the RGB digital number values into the RGB reflectance spectrum, utilizing a linear regression method. Excess Green (ExG) vegetation indices for each of the test plots were compared with the M-statistic method in order to quantitatively evaluate the greenness of soybean fields under different cropping systems. Results: The reflectance calibration methods used in the study showed high coefficients of determination, ranging from 0.8 to 0.9, indicating the feasibility of a linear regression fitting method for monitoring multi-temporal RGB images of soybean fields. As expected, the ExG vegetation indices changed according to different soybean growth stages, showing clear differences among the test plots with different cropping treatments in the early season of < 60 days after sowing (DAS). With the M-statistic method, the test plots under different treatments could be discriminated in the early seasons of <41 DAS, showing a value of M > 1. Conclusion: Therefore, multi-temporal images obtained with an UAV and a RGB camera could be applied for quantifying overall vegetation fractions and crop growth status, and this information could contribute to determine proper treatments for the vegetation fraction.
