This experiment was conducted to select optimal cultivars of long leaf vase life for flower arrangements among 21 Hosta cultivars that were selected based on their ornamental value. As a result of the investigation, the cultivar with the longest leaf vase life was 'June' with 29 days record. The cultivars with a more than 10 days record were 'Remember Me', H. lancifolia var. grandiflora, 'Grand Marquee', 'Dress Blue', 'Blue Dimples', 'Frosted Dimples', 'Birchwood Park's Gold', 'Krossa Regal', and 'Paradise Power'. These 10 cultivars had a high chlorophyll content, and had low chlorophyll content changes over time and were high in water absorption. The 10 selected cultivars had equal characteristics of increase in chlorophyll content within a certain period of time. These cultivars have a longer vase life when compared to others. This indicates the potential to develop better materials be use with flower arrangements.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of functional packing materials on vase life and quality of Lilium Oriental hybrid 'Le Reve' and Rosa hybrida 'Fire King'. Lily and rose were stored at $5^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ for two days after packing of 25% calcium or 36% wax coated package. When Lilium Oriental hybrid 'Le Reve' was stored in $5^{\circ}C$ after packing of 36% wax coated package, vase life and maintenance of freshness were improved by two days. But when Rosa hybrida 'Fire King' was stored in $5^{\circ}C$ or $20^{\circ}C$after packing of 25% calcium or 36% wax coated package, vase life and maintenance of freshness were not as effective as Lily. In our opinion, functional package seems useful in the storage of cut lily.

Standard carnations are widely used in flower design as a mass flower, but there is a limit to the use in that it can not be used in various colors in addition to its own color. The purpose of this study was to investigate how does artificial dyes affect vase life, using standard carnations, and to improve utilization of dyeing carnations in floral design. Using standard carnation 'White Liberty', dyeing experiment was performed according to four kinds of chemicals for each of six dyes. Six different dyes from Koch(Robert Koch industries Inc., USA) as follows light blue(2386), lime green(2315), christmas red(2506), lavender(2200), orange fire(2268) and black(2012) have been used and four different chemicals as follows distilled water, 4% ethanol, 3% sucrose and 100mg·L-1 citric acid have been used with the cut Dianthus caryophyllus 'White Liberty'. As a result, six different dyes showed fast and excellent dyeing with 3% sucrose and 100mg·L-1 citric acid treatment. But vase life in other dyes except black and lavender tended to be similar to control(7 days).
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of vase material and floral preservative treatment over time on flower color, leaf color and flower size of cut flowers Rosa hybrida 'Aqua' and 'Corvernet', and Gerbera jamesonii 'Honeymoon' and 'Golden Time' stuck in a glass, porcelain, or onggi (pottery with a dark bronze glaze) vase containing either tap water or a floral preservative solution. The ${\Delta}E$ values in flower color of 'Aqua' rose at 8 days after treatment with a floral preservative in onggi and porcelain vases were low. The ${\Delta}E$ value of 'Covernet' rose treated with floral preservative in an onggi vase was the lowest and L value was the closest to that of petals of cut flowers at just before treatment (control). The ${\Delta}E$ value of 'Honeymoon' gerbera treated with a floral preservative in an onggi vase was the lowest and a value of 58.81 and b value of 34.29 were the closest to that of the control group as color of cut flowers in an onggi vase was similar to the color at the beginning of treatment. The ${\Delta}E$ value of 'Golden Time' gerbera treated in an onggi vase was significantly lower than that in a porcelain or glass vase and a value of -7.81 treated with a floral preservative solution in an onggi vase was the closest to the control and b value was high in an onggi vase as well. The L, a, and b values in leaf color of roses were similar to each value of the control and ${\Delta}E$ value of 3.25 measured in an onggi vase was lower than that in a porcelain or glass vase. Flower diameter of 'Covernet' and 'Golden Time' roses treated with a floral preservative in an onggi vase was greater than that in other treatments. From these results, the floral preservative applied to a holding solution is assumed to improve the quality and freshness of cut roses and gerberas by inhibiting microbes propagation and by promoting uptake of water and nutrients. The onggi vase with fine pores will promote the expression and maintenance of flower and leaf colors and may increase flower diameter by high air permeability.

This experiment was conducted to examine the effects of chitosan and sucrose on the vase life of cut rose (Rosa hybrida L. cv. Cardinal). Addition of 5 mg/L chitosan and 3% sucrose to the holding solution prolonged the vase life for 3 days as compared to the control, and improved quality of cut rose in flower diameter and fresh weight. Development of bent-neck was delayed by supply of 2 mg/L or 5 mg/L chitosan and 3% sucrose about 2 or 3 days. When 3% sucrose was added to the holding solution, the rate of water absorption more slowly decreased compared to the other treatments.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate quality and vase life of cut rose 'Rote Rose' cultivated in soil or hydroponically in rockwool. Rose flower stems harvested in commercial greenhouses in Kimhae on May 27 and June 14, 1998 were transported for about two hours to a laboratory and recut in water to an uniform stem length of 45cm. The rose flowers harvested on the same day were displayed at a density of $10cm{\times}10cm$ and were subjected to the same environmental conditions in a growth chamber. The stems were put in four different preservative solutions, 0.5% Chrysal RVB, BS (2% sucrose+200ppm 8HQS+0.3% Chrysal RVB), Sonk1 (BS+0.1mM ethionine), and double distilled $H_2O$. Flower stems harvested on May 27 were displayed at $18{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, RH 60-70%, and light intensity of 220lux provided by fluorescent lamps for $16h{\cdot}d^{-1}$. Flower stems harvested on June 14 were displayed at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, RH 70-80%, and light intensity of 220lux provided by fluorescent lamps for $16h{\cdot}d^{-1}$. Fresh weight and flower diameter were affected by cultivation method, and were greater in hydroponically-grown roses than in soil-grown roses. Among the preservative solutions, BS and Sonk1 were superior to Chrysal RVB in terms of prolonging vase life. Vase life extension in Chrysal RVB, BS and Sonk1 over the control was about one day in both display temperatures. At $18^{\circ}C$ vase life was maintained for three to four additional days as compared to that at $25^{\circ}C$.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of several pretreatments and holding solutions on the vase life and quality of cut Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum for. variegatum stems native to Korea. Postharvest foliar spray of 200 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$ or 200 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA + 200 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$ markedly extended the vase life of cut stems of Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum for. variegatum. These treatments maintained high chlorophyll contents as compared with the control (distilled water) during senescence of cut stems. Postharvest pretreatment (dipping) with 100 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$ or 3% sucrose + 200 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (HQS) + 100 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$ for 16 hours extended vase life of cut stems 2.5 times as long as nontreated control. Holding solution of 2% sucrose + 200 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQS + 100 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$ significantly extended vase life by 3.5 times and increased fresh weight as compared with control. $GA_3$ were very effective on preventing leaf yellowing of cut Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum for. variegatum stems. Postharvest foliar spray of 200 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$ or holding solution of 2% sucrose + 200 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQS + 100 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$ markedly extended vase life and improved quality of cut stems of Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum for. variegatum.
This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial effect of freely available chlorine (FAC) on the vase life of cut rose 'Brut' (Rosa hybrida L.). Postharvest treatments to extend the vase life of cut roses were divided into holding solution treatment and pulsing solution treatment. In holding solution treatment, the cut roses were treated with the preservative solutions containing FAC (0, 10, 20, and $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) and sucrose (0 and 2%, w/v). In pulsing solution treatment, cut roses were dipped into the FAC solutions of 100, 200, and $400mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ for 10 seconds. The longest vase life of cut roses was observed in the holding solution with FAC $20mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ as 12 days, followed by pulsing with $400mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ as 11 days, which were four or five days longer than the control. In addition, relative fresh weight and water uptake were the highest in the holding solutions with FAC 20 and $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. The antimicrobial effect of FAC in vase solution was lasted for eight days after treatment, which was offset by sucrose addition. FAC contents in the FAC holding solution mixed with sucrose were exhausted by 88% two days after treatment, whereas only 15% of FAC was reduced in the holding solution without sucrose. This study indicated that FAC can be applied to extension of the postharvest life of cut roses by antimicrobial activity.
This experiment was conducted to clarify the effects of cycloheximide and holding solution on vase life of cut 'Blue Magic' iris. The vase life of iris flowers held in 3% sucrose (S) + $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ hydroxy quinoline sulfate (HQS) + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$AgNO_3$ + $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ Benzylaminopurine (BA), 3% S + $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQS + $10{\mu}M$ cycloheximide (CHI), or 3% S + $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQS + $50{\mu}M$ CHI were much longer than those held in distilled water. Squeeze stem phenomenon that showed at a holding solution containing $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQS disappeared at a holding solution containing $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQS. The holding solution containing 3% S + $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQS + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$AgNO_3$ + $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA extended the most effective treatments on vase life, fresh weight, water balance, and flowering of cut iris flowers. However, the holding solution containing 3% S + $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQS + $10{\mu}M$ CHI and 3% S + $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQS + $50{\mu}M$ CHI was not effective in solution uptake or transpiration, but did result in high water balance. Iris flowers treated with CHI at the half-open flower stage showed increases in ornamental value, such as full flower opening and extended vase life. To improve flower quality and prolonging vase life of cut iris flowers, a holding solution containing $50{\mu}M$ CHI can be used continuously from the half-open stage.
