This study describes a new graphical method for assessing and characterizing effect modification by a matching covariate in matched case-control studies. This method to understand effect modification is based on a semiparametric model using a varying coefficient model. The method allows for nonparametric relationships between effect modification and other covariates, or can be useful in suggesting parametric models. This method can be applied to examining effect modification by any ordered categorical or continuous covariates for which cases have been matched with controls. The method applies to effect modification when causality might be reasonably assumed. An example from veterinary medicine is used to demonstrate our approach. The simulation results show that this method, when based on linear, quadratic and nonparametric effect modification, can be more powerful than both a parametric multiplicative model fit and a fully nonparametric generalized additive model fit.
This paper discusses approximation modelling of discrete-time linear time-varying system(LTVS). The wavelet transform is considered as a tool for representing and approximating a LTVS. The joint time-frequency properties of wave analysis are appropriate for describing the LTVS. Simulation results is included to illustrate the potential application of the technique.
This paper deals with aerodynamic problems of the rotating blade of Darrieus wind turbine and its instantaneous torque. The instantaneous torque varying with the rotating angle of blade was obtained through resultant wind velocity, angle of attack, lift and drag coefficient. These are obtained from a given wing section, size and wind velocity.
In this paper, we define two new subclass of k-uniformly starlike and convex functions of order ${\alpha}$ type ${\beta}$ with varying argument of coefficients. Further, we obtain coefficient estimates, extreme points, growth and distortion bounds, radii of starlikeness, convexity and results on modified Hadamard products.
In this study, to investigate the effect of the array of cylindrical baffles on debris flow impact load, a series of small-scale tests were conducted according to varying row numbers of installed baffles in the flume. After the test, the behavior of debris flow interacting with baffles during the flow process was investigated. Based on the results, the influence varying velocity and flow depth on Froude number and dynamic pressure coefficient were analyzed. Test results showed that the greatest peak impact load occurred at the second row of baffle arrays. The dynamic pressure coefficient was also estimated by suggested equation and compared with previous studies.
This study presents an online estimation of an excavator's rotational inertia by using recursive least square with forgetting. It is difficult to measure rotational inertia in real systems. Against this background, online estimation of rotational inertia is essential for improving safety and automation of construction equipment such as excavators because changes in inertial parameter impact dynamic characteristics. Regarding an excavator, rotational inertia for swing motion may change significantly according to working posture and digging conditions. Hence, rotational inertia estimation by predicting swing motion is critical for enhancing working safety and automation. Swing velocity and damping coefficient were used for rotational inertia estimation in this study. Updating rules are proposed for enhancing convergence performance by using the damping coefficient and forgetting factors. The proposed estimation algorithm uses three forgetting factors to estimate time-varying rotational inertia, damping coefficient, and torque with different variation rates. Rotational inertia in a typical working scenario was considered for reasonable performance evaluation. Three simulations were conducted by considering several digging conditions. Presented estimation results reveal the proposed estimation scheme is effective for estimating varying rotational inertia of the excavator.
Collection and storing of multiple time series data in real time requires large memory space. To solve this problem, the usage of varying sample size is proposed in the compression scheme using discrete cosine transform technique. Time series data set has characteristics such that a higher compression ratio can be achieved with smaller amount of value changes and lower frequency of the value changes. The coefficient of variation and the variability of the differences between adjacent data elements (VDAD) are presumed to be very good measures to represent the characteristics of the time series data and used as key parameters to determine the varying sample size. Test results showed that both VDAD-based and the coefficient of variation-based scheme generate excellent compression ratios. However, the former scheme uses much simpler sample size decision mechanism and results in better compression performance than the latter scheme.

This paper relates with the VS-QE-MMA (Varying Stepsize-Quantized Error-MMA) based on the varying stepsize for improving the equalization performance in the QE-MMA adaptive equalization algorithm that is possible to reducing the intersymbol interference occurred at channel. The SE-MMA use the high-order statistics of transmitted signal and sign of error signal. The QE-MMA was appeared for the H/W implementation easiness substitutes the multiplication and substraction into the shift and substraction in the updating the tap coefficient based on the power-of-two operation of error signal magnitude. The QE-MMA gives degradation of equalization performance due to the such simplification of arithmetic operation. For improving this problem, the propose algorithm, namely VS-QE-MMA, applies the varying stepsize of the nonlinear transformation of error signal. It was confirmed by simulation that the VS-QE-MMA gives better performance than current QE-MMA in the same channel and signal to noise ratio. As a result of simulation, the VS-QE-MMA has more better performance in the every performance index, and it was also confirmed that the varying stepsize effect can be obtained in the greater than 10dB of signal to noise ratio.

The object of this study is to find new evalution index for in-cylinder flow characteristics insteady of current swirl, tumble coefficient using steady flow test rig on intake port system. To this end, port flow rig test was conducted on DOHC head varying intake valve lift respectively. Finally combination angular coefficient and inclination angle were introduced as new evaluation index for in-cylinder angular flow characteristics.
The aim of this study was to explore the influence of structure coupling effect on structural damping of blade based on the blade vibration characteristic. For this purpose, the scaled blade model of NREL 5 MW offshore wind turbine was processed and employed in the wind tunnel test to validate the reliability of theoretical and numerical models. The attenuation curves of maximum displacement and the varying curves of equivalent damping coefficient of the blade under the rated condition were respectively compared and analyzed by constructing single blade model and whole machine model. The attenuation law of blade dynamic response was obtained and the structure coupling effect was proved to exert a significant influence on the equivalent damping coefficient. The results indicate that the attenuation trend of the maximum displacement response curve of the single blade varies more obviously with the increase of elastic modulus as compared to that under the structure coupling effect. In contrast to the single blade model, the varying curve of equivalent damping coefficient with the period is relatively steep for the whole machine model. The findings are of great significance to guide the structure design and material selection for wind turbine blades.
