Analytical approach is applied to predict temperature of satellite box under worst hot condition from fairing jettison to separation. The box is tried to solve analytically which is exposed to known environmental heating condition and has internal heating and irradiation to space. For a single thermal mass, governing equation for temperature is simplified to 1st order ordinary differential equation(ODE) by several assumptions. Two cases are considered. The one is for constant mass box and the other is for mass-varying box. Each case has three different analytical solution by sign of constant term in ODE. One analytical solution for constant mass is applied to physical launch stage condition. It is concluded that the present analytical method can be used to quick predict the temperature of a satellite box and check whether a satellite is safe against space environment during launch stage.

Robust semi-active vibration control of wind turbines using tuned mass dampers (TMDs) is a promising technique. This study investigates a 1.5 megawatt wind turbine controlled by eight different types of tuned mass damper systems of equal mass: a passive TMD, a semi-active varying-spring TMD, a semi-active varying-damper TMD, a semi-active varying-damper-and-spring TMD, as well as these four damper systems paired with an additional smaller passive TMD near the mid-point of the tower. The mechanism and controllers for each of these TMD systems are explained, such as employing magnetorheological dampers for the varying-damper TMD cases. The turbine is modelled as a lumped-mass 3D finite element model. The uncontrolled and controlled turbines are subjected to loading and operational cases including service wind loads on operational turbines, seismic loading with service wind on operational turbines, and high-intensity storm wind loads on parked turbines. The displacement and acceleration responses of the tower at the first and second mode shape maxima were used as the performance indicators. Ultimately, it was found that while all the semi-active TMD systems outperformed the passive systems, it was the semi-active varying-damper-and-spring system that was found to be the most effective overall - capable of controlling vibrations about as effectively with only half the mass as a passive TMD. It was also shown that by reducing the mass of the TMD and adding a second smaller TMD below, the vibrations near the mid-point could be greatly reduced at the cost of slightly increased vibrations at the tower top.

Accurate prediction of the trajectory and time of a time-varying mass parachute system remains essential in the mission requiring a precision airdrop to the ground. In this study, we investigate the altitude-varying behavior of a cross-type parachute system designed to deliver a time-varying mass object like flare. The dynamics of the descending parachute system was analyzed based on the Runge-Kutta method of the ordinary differential system. The drag coefficients of the cross-type parachute and flare were calculated by a CFD code based on the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. Finally, by using a simplified gust wind model in troposphere, the combined effects of gust wind and time-varying mass were examined in detail.
A formula to approximate the fundamental period of a fixed-free mass-spring system with varying mass and varying stiffness is formulated. The formula is derived mainly by taking the dominant parts from the general form of the characteristic polynomial, and adjusting the initial approximation by a coefficient derived from the exact solution of a uniform case. The formula is tested for a large number of randomly generated structures, and the results show that the approximated fundamental periods are within the error range of 4% with 90% of confidence. Also, the error is shown to be normally distributed with zero mean, and the width of the distribution (as measured by the standard deviation) tends to decrease as the total number of discretized elements in the system increases. Other possible extensions of the formula are discussed, including an extension to a continuous cantilever structure with distributed mass and stiffness. The suggested formula provides an efficient way to estimate the fundamental period of building structures and other systems that can be modeled as mass-spring systems.
Current estimates of the ice-mass balance over the Greenland and the Antarctica using retrievals of time-varying gravity from GRACE are presented. Two different GRACE gravity data, UTCSR RL01 and UTCSR RL04, are used for the estimates to examine the impact of the relative accuracy of background models in the GRACE data processing for inter-annual variations of GRACE gravity data. In addition, the ice-mass balance is appraised from the conventional GRACE data, which represents global gravity, and the filtered GRACE data, which isolates the terrestrial gravity effect from GRACE gravity data. The former estimate shows that there exists similar negative trends of ice-mass balance over the Greenland from UTCSR RL01 and UTCSR RL04 while the time series from the both GRACE data over the Antarctica differ significantly from each other, and no apparent trends are observed. The result for the Greenland from the latter calculation is similar to the former estimate. However, the latter calculation presents positive trends of ice-mass balance for the Antarctica from both GRACE data. These results imply that residual oceanic geophysical signals, particularly for ocean tides, significantly corrupt the ice-mass estimate over the Antarctica as leakage error. In addition, the spatial alias of GRACE is likely to affect the ice-mass balance because the spatial spectrum of ocean tides is not conserved via GRACE sampling, and thus ocean tides contaminate terrestrial gravity signal. To minimize the alias effect, I suggest to use the combined gravity models from GRACE, SLR and polar motion.
This paper presents a vehicle mass and road grade estimator for developing an automated bus. To consider the dynamic characteristics of a bus varying with the number of passengers, the longitudinal controller needs the estimation of the vehicle's mass and road grade in real-time and utilizes the information to adjust the control gains. Discrete Kalman filter is applied to estimate the time-varying road grade, and the recursive least squares algorithm is adopted to account for the constant mass estimation. After being implemented in MATLAB/Simulink, the estimators are evaluated with the dynamic model and experimental data of the target bus. The proposed estimators will be applied to complement the algorithm of the longitudinal controller and proceed with algorithm verification.
This paper presents an improved time series based damage detection approach with experimental verifications for detection, localization, and quantification of damage in shear-type structures under varying mass effects using output-only vibration data. The proposed method can be very effective for automated monitoring of buildings to develop proactive maintenance strategies. In this method, Auto-Regressive Moving Average models with eXogenous inputs (ARMAX) are built to represent the dynamic relationship of different sensor clusters. The damage features are extracted based on the relative difference of the ARMAX model coefficients to identify the existence, location and severity of damage of stiffness and mass separately. The results from a laboratory-scale shear type structure show that different damage scenarios are revealed successfully using the approach. At the end of this paper, the methodology limitations are also discussed, especially when simultaneous occurrence of mass and stiffness damage at multiple locations.
Rock disturbance caused by blasting and stress relaxation is commonly observed during excavation. As the distance from the source of disturbance increases, the degree of disturbance decreases, and rock at a large depth does not experience disturbance. However, in stability analyses, a single value of disturbance is often applied to the entire rock mass, which leads to underestimated results. In this study, this modeling mistake is addressed by considering realistically varying rock disturbance. The safety of infinite slopes in a disturbed rock mass with a strength governed by the Hoek-Brown failure criterion is investigated based on the kinematic approach of limit analysis. The maximum disturbance is assigned to the outermost slope face because it is directly exposed to blasting damage and dilation, and the disturbance progressively decays with distance in the rock mass. The safety analysis results indicate that the assumption of uniform disturbance in the entire rock mass leads to underestimation of the rock strength and safety on infinite rock slopes. A critical slip surface appears to be within the disturbed rock layer as well as the interface between the disturbed upper rock and undisturbed lower rock.

The gain-scheduling control technique is vary useful in the control problem incorporating time varying parameters which can be measured in real time. Based on these facts, in this paper the sway control problem of the pendulum motion of a container hanging on the trolly, which transports containers from a container ship to trucks, is considered. In the container crane control problem, suppressing the residual swing motion of the container at the end of acceleration, deceleration or the case of that the unexpected disturbance input exists is main issue. For this problem, in general, the trolley motion control strategy is introduced and applied. But, in this paper, we introduce and synthesize a new type of swing motion control system. In this control system, a small auxiliary mass is installed on the spreader. And the actuator reacts against the auxiliary mass, applying inertial control forces to the container to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. In this paper, we assume that an plant parameter is varying and apply the gain-scheduling control technique design the anti-swing motion control system for the controlled plant. In this control system, the controller dynamics are adjusted in real-time according to time-varying plant parameters. And the simulation result shows that the proposed control strategy is shown to be useful to the case of time-varying system and, robust to disturbances like winds and initial sway motion.
This paper presents the effects of the computational time-varying delay on the stability of the haptic system that includes a virtual wall and a first-order-hold method. The model of a haptic system includes a haptic device model with a mass and a damper, a virtual wall model, a first-order-hold model and a computational time-varying delay model. In this paper, the maximum of the computational time-varying delay is assumed to be as much as the sampling time. Using the simulation, it is analyzed how the sample-hold methods and the computational time-varying delay affect the maximum available stiffness. As the maximum of computational time-varying delay increases, the maximal available stiffness of a virtual wall model is reduced.
