  • Transformed roots of Schisandra chinensis were obtained following co-cultivation of in vitro cultivated plantlet segments with Agrobaterium rhizogens ATCC15834. This root was examined for its growth and gomisin J contents under various culture conditions. Among the six basal culture media tested, WPM (Lloyd & McCown, 1980) medium supplemented with 5% sucrose was the best roots growth 6.2 (g D.W/flask) and gomisin J accumulation 1.56 $(X10^{-3}\;ug/g\;D.W)$. Initial inoculum size correlated with the yield of biomass while gomisin J contents was not affect. Gomisin J production was influenced by the initial sucrose concentration and the highest production yield was achieved at the concentration of 7%. The optimal shaking speeds for roots growth and gomisin J production was 120 and 140 rpm, respectively.

  • The effect of pH on anaerobic hydrogen production was investigated under various pH conditions ranging from pH 3 to 10. When the modified Gompertz equation was applied to the statistical analysis of the experimental data, the hydrogen production potential and specific hydrogen production rate at pH 5 were 1,182 ml and 112.5 ml/g biomass-h, respectively. In this experiment, the maximum theoretical hydrogen conversion ratio was 22.56%. The Haldane equation model was used to find the optimum pH for hydrogen production and the maximum specific hydrogen production rate. The optimum pH predicted by this model is 5.5 and the maximum specific hydrogen production rate is 119.6 ml/g VSS-h. These data fit well with the experimented data($r^2=0.98$).

  • The basidomycetes fungus, Agaricus blazei Murill has been well known as the biologically active polysaccharides. They do not attack cancer cells directly, but produce their antitumor effects by activating various immune responses in the host. This present study was designed to investigate the immune activity of polysaccharides extracted from fruiting body, culture broth, and mycelia. In order to examine the optimum conditions of polysaccharide production, medium and C/N ratio were examined in flask culture. The fine polysaccharides were isolated and purified by DEAE cellulose and Sephadex CL-6B, respectively. Each fraction was spplied to recognize NO synthesis and TNF-${\alpha}$ for immune activity test.

  • Callus was derived from the leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. The productions of baicalin in the cultivated callus under various conditions, especially, the effects of the light sources and temperature were studied. In this experiment, the callus cultivated at $25^{\circ}C$ showed higer production of baicalin than the callus cultivated at $21^{\circ}C$ and $23^{\circ}C$. The illumination of light(fluorescence and UV) accelerated generally the growth of callus and the production of baicalin during the cultivation for three weeks. But, the illumination of light more than three weeks reduced the rate of production of baicalin in the callus.

  • To determine the optimum mixing conditions of nopal jelly, samples were prepared with various compounding ratios of gelatin(16, 18, 20, 22 and 24g), sucrose(100, 120, 140, 160 and 180g), Citric acid(2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) using a central composite design. Physical and sensory evaluations were performed and considered using a response surface methodology. The optimum mixing rates which meet sensory items is gelatin 20.19g, sucrose 141.52g and citric acid 4.04g.

  • The purpose of this research was to analysis compounds of unpleasant odor from the cotton fabrics in dehydration and drying process during washing. The cotton fabrics were treated with various commercial detergents and fabric softener or cationic surfactants such as Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB) and Benzalkonium chloride(BC), then dehydrated and dried. The compounds of odor impregnated in fabric were detected by using CC-MS. The results are as follows: The fabrics treated with a powder-type detergent, CTAB and BC gave out compounds unpleasant odor. n-Butyraldehyde and isobutyaldehyde produced during microorganism growth were revealed as source of the compounds of the unpleasant odor. However, no aldehydes were detected from the fabrics treated with commercial fabric softener which seems to act as a deodorizer.

  • It is quite natural that the preference of food should be changed by the effect of the social environments and economic conditions of each period, however, the Korean traditional food has been enrooted firmly as one of the fundamental elements in our life which has been formed in harmony with the natural surroundings and the human life patterns in Korea. As a result of my study on Korean food through various documents and papers which were published in the part from Yi Dynasty till now, about 4,000 items were collected. This paper is prepared to report some of those items with a brief summary.

  • Micropropagation is an alternative mean of propagation that can be employed in mass multiplication of plants in relatively shorter time. Recent modern techniques of propagation have been developed which could facilitate large scale production of true-to-type plants and for the improvement of the species using genetic engineering techniques in the next century. An overview on the in vitro propagation via meristem culture, regeneration via organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis is presented. The usefulness of the plants in commercial industry as well as propagation techniques, screening for various useful characteristics and the influence of different cultural conditions in the multiplication, rooting and acclimatization phases on the growth of tissue cultured plant discussed.

  • Background: Communication is important for the elderly to maintain existing social relationships while creating new relationships based on good communication skills to lessen psychological and emotional distress and lead a healthy life in advanced age. Aims: This study identifies the difference between the social network-based quality of communication life and the overall quality of life in the elderly and how much the quality of communication life affects the overall quality of life. Methods: This research includes a survey of the elderly aged 65 and over living in small cities of South Korea. Data sets of 201 elderly were analyzed. Results: This study found a significant correlation between the quality of communication life and the overall quality of life. Religion also influences the elderly's quality of communication life. The elderly's quality of communication life has 40% explanatory power of the overall quality of life. Conclusion: Consequently, senior citizens' quality of life will be improved through the enhanced quality of communication in addition to financial and health conditions by participating in various community activities similar to those provided by religion to increase opportunities for communication.

  • In vitro maturation (IVM) of oocytes is the procedure where the immature oocytes are cultivated in a laboratory until they are mature. Since IVM oocytes generally have low developmental competence as compared to those matured in vivo, development of an optimal IVM culture system by fine-tuning culture conditions is crucial to maintain high quality. In-depth knowledge and a deep understanding of the in vivo physiology of oocyte maturation are pre-requisites to accomplish this. Within ovarian follicles, various signaling pathways that drive oocyte development and maturation regulate interaction between oocytes and surrounding somatic cells. This review discusses the sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway, which has been demonstrated to be intimately involved in folliculogenesis and oocyte maturation. Advances in elucidating the role of the SHH signaling pathway in oocyte maturation will aid attempts to improve the current inferior in vitro oocyte maturation system.
