Fabrication of Poly(L-lactide) Scaffold Membranes through Phase Inversion with Pure and Mixed Solvents (순수용매와 혼합용매를 이용한 상전이를 통한 Poly(L-lactide) 스캐폴드 막의 제조)

  • This paper reports a fabrication of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) scaffold membranes through phase separation process using pure and mixed solvents. Chloroform and 1,4-dioxane were used as pure solvents and mixed solvents were obtained by mixing the pure solvents together. Morphologies, mechanical properties and mass transfer characteristics of the scaffold membranes were investigated through SEM, stress-strain test and glucose diffusion test. Scaffold membranes from the solution with pure chloroform showed solid-wall pore structure. In contrast, nano-fibrous membranes were fabricated from the solution with pure 1,4-dioxane. In case of mixed solvents, the scaffold membranes showed various structures with changing composition of the solvents. When 1,4-dioxane content was lower than 20 wt% in the solvent, scaffold membrane showed solid-wall pore structure. When the content was 20 wt%, scaffold membranes with macropores with the maximum size of $100{\mu}m$ was obtained. In the concentration range of 1,4-dioxane over 25 wt%, the scaffold membranes showed nano-fibrous structures. In this range, the fibers showed different diameters with changing composition of the solvent. The minimum fiber diameter was about $15{\mu}m$, when 1,4-dioxane composition was 80 wt%. These results indicate that the composition of the solvent showed a significant effect on the structure of scaffold membrane.

  • Fluorescence quenching of l,4-bis [2-(2-methylphenyl) ethenyl]-benzene (Bis-MSB) by carbon tetrachloride in five different solvents namely hexane, cyclohexane, toluene, benzene and dioxane has been carried out at room temperature with a view to understand the quenching mechanisms. The Stern-Volmer plot has been found to be non-linear with a positive deviation for all the solvents studied. In order to interpret these results we have invoked the Ground state complex and Sphere of action static quenching models. Using these models various rate parameters have been determined. The magnitudes of these parameters imply that sphere of action static quenching model agrees well with the experimental results. Hence the positive deviation in the Stem-Volmer plots is attributed to the static and dynamic quenching. Further, with the use of Finite Sink approximation model, it was possible to check whether these bimolecular reactions as diffusion limited and to estimate independently distance parameter R' and mutual diffusion coefficient D. Finally an effort has been made to correlate the values of R'and D with the values of the encounter distance R and the mutual diffusion coefficient D determined using the Edwardis empirical relation and Stokes-Einstein relation.

Interactive Effect of Food Compositions on the Migration Behavior of Printing Ink Solvent

  • The partitioning behavior of the five printing ink solvents in nine lab-made cookies with various sugar and water content at 25${^{\circ}C}$ was studied to find out the presence and effects of interaction between the two ingredients on partitioning behavior in cookies. Solvents were ethyl acetate, hexane, isopropanol, methyl ethyl ketone and hexane. It was observed that the partition coefficient (the solvent concentration in food compared to that in air, Kp) decreased as sugar increased in all case and increased as water content increased for all compounds except toluene. Statistical analysis by the F-test method was used to determine the significance of sugar-water interactions, as well as other single factors on partitioning behavior of each solvent. Sugar content alone had no significant effects, but the crystallinity of sugar, as changed by water content, affected the partitioning behavior of the five solvents significantly. Parameter estimation for each significant factor by SAS program yielded a regression equation, which was used to predict the partitioning behavior in the finished cookie. Kp values from the regression equation could be determined more precisely by applying a correction term for the interaction between sugar and water to the Kp values of each ingredient after baking.

  • Even if odorous compounds remain very low concentration in water, it cause strong odor. Because Geosmin and most of odorous compound had very low vaporization, those were difficult to analyze with GC/MSD and Purge & Trap. So, we needed pre-treatment method for decreasing amounts of extracting solvents, improving recovery efficiencies and increasing analytical efficiencies. This study developed efficient technology for analyzing odorous compounds, using various adsorbents and extracting solvents. The optimum adsorbent was XAD resins. Especially, XAD-2, XAD-7 and XAD-2010 were superior, but XAD-2 of these and the optimum extraction solvent is MTBE. Other extraction solvents' efficiency is in order of MTBE>Dichloromethane>n-Hexane>Diethylether. The optimum NaCl dosage for increasing efficiency is 5 g in liquid-liquid extraction method. The shaking time(0~24hr) has no concern with adsorption efficiency. The optimum adsorbent is XAD-2 resin and extraction solvent is MTBE. Dosing NaCl, adsorption efficiency is increased in liquid-liquid extraction method, but NaCl has no effect on liquid-solid extraction method. In this experimental results, this algae toxins(Mycrocystin, Anatoxin etc.).

  • Lignocellulosic biomass has recalcitrant characteristics against chemical and biological conversion due to its structural heterogeneity and complexity. The pretreatment process to overcome these recalcitrant properties is essential, especially for the biochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass. In recent years, pretreatment methods using ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as the green solvent has attracted great attention because of their advantages such as easy recovery, chemical stability, temperature stability, nonflammability, low vapor pressure, and wide liquids range. However, there are some limitations such as high viscosity, poor economical feasibility, etc. to be solved for practical use. This paper reviewed the research activities on the pretreatment effect of various ILs including DESs and their co-solvents with organic solvents on the enzymatic saccharification efficiency of lignocellulosic biomass and the nanocellulose preparation from the pretreated products.

  • Retention behaviors of aliphatic and aromatic compounds were investigated with Van der Waals volume which represented the molecular size. The organic solvents, methanol, acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran, were mixed with water at various ratio, respectively. The selectivity of organic solvents were tested by change of column temperature. The capacity factor was increased linearly according to the enlargement of molecular size. Therefore, Van der Waals volume was useful to predict the elution of organic molecules in reversed-phase column. The order of elution capacity of solvents was methanol

Effect of chemical and physical structure on partitioning behavior of representative printing ink solvents and various food ingredients (식품 성분과 식품 포장용 인쇄 잉크 용매의 화학적 구조가 분배작용에 미치는 영향)

  • Migration behavior of selected solvents and food samples showed differences of the chemical structures and polarities, the food samples which have similar polar expresses more higher affinity than different polar degrees. Water which is polar has a highest partitioning coefficient values on polar isopropanol, and oil which is nonpolar has highest partitioning value on non-polar toluene. The increasing order of partitioning values was accord with increasing water contents in food samples. It is showed that the wheat flour with 13.2% moisture content has the highest partitioning coefficient values on the isopropanol with -OH. Kp value of sugar showed remarkable lower partitioning coefficient values than other food samples due to high degree crystallinity. This phenomenon can be predictable with ${\delta}$ values, because order of partitioning coefficient values which comes out through the experiment and the sequence of Hildebrand solubility parameter value difference between food sample and printing ink solvent correspond almost. This Hildebrand solubility parameter value can be easily applied to the food package industry because the effect of food-safety can be considered without passing through complicated steps by using this method.

A Study of Effects of Ilex serrata Thunb Extracts (낙상홍 추출물의 효능에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, Ilex serrata Thunb was extracted with 70% methanol and concentrated under reduced pressure to measure its total polyphenol contents; furthermore, we examined the effect of electron donating ability of the various extracts. The extract was fractionated using different solvents such as methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, and methanol to investigate total polyphenol contents and electron donating abilities. The total polyphenol contents were $1,058.59{\pm}85.85{\mu}g\;GAE/mL$ in 70% methanol, $297.29{\pm}29.43{\mu}g\;GAE/mL$ in methylene chloride, $313.28{\pm}9.22{\mu}g\;GAE/mL$ in ethyl acetate, and $837.82{\pm}31.16{\mu}g\;GAE/mL$ in methanol. The total polyphenol contents showed significant differences (p<0.05) between the solvents. The electron donating abilities were $72.93{\pm}0.29%$ for 70% methanol extract, $14.02{\pm}2.01%$ for methylene chloride, $24.05{\pm}1.75%$ for ethyl acetate, and $84.08{\pm}1.95%$ for methanol. The electron donating abilities were significantly different (p<0.05) between the solvents. The two portions of Ilex serrata Thunb extracts obtained from methanol showed significantly relevant results in the total polyphenol contents and electron donating ability, which was higher than the original extract.

  • Hydrogen bonding, dielectric effects and steric effects are all factors which determine the carbonyl stretching frequency, νC=O of ketones in solution. The νC=O frequency of ketones is affected by change in concentration of ketones in various solvents. The νC=O frequency shifts to lower frequency in nonpolar solvents and shifts to higher frequency in polar solvents with the increasing volume% of ketones. In acetonitrle, the νC=O frequency shifts to higher frequency as the volume% of ketones is increased except dimethyl ketone. The νC=O frequency shifts to lower frequency as the solvent system becomes increasingly polar or with the increasing extent of intermolecular hydrogen bonding, as in the case of increasing volume% chloroform in $CHCl_3$/$CCl_4$ solvent system.

Antioxidant Activity of Partially Purified Extracts Isolated from Bacillus polyfermenticus SCD Culture

  • The antioxidant activity of Bacillus polyfermenticus SCD was studied by partially purified culture extracts using various methods: ammonium sulfate precipitation, adsorption to Diaion HP-20 columns using polar solvents, and extraction using non-polar solvents. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picyrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of these partially purified fractions was then investigated. The precipitate isolated using 75%-saturated ammonium sulfate was shown to contain about 77.2% DPPH radical scavenging activity. Using the Diaion HP-20 resin adsorption method, the fraction obtained using 60% ethanol and 60% methanol possessed 76.7 and 89.5% DPPH radical scavenging activity, respectively. Fractions obtained by extracting with the non-polar solvents 80 mg/mL chloroform, 80 mg/mL n-hexane, 80 mg/mL ethyl acetate, and 80 mg/mL butanol contained 68.4, 75.0, 70.7, and 87.5% DPPH radical scavenging activity, respectively. Further study is needed to characterize the antioxidant substance(s) released by B. polyfermenticus SCD cultures.
