  • This study used Hierarchical Linear Modeling analysis to investigate the effects of individual self-regulated cognitive strategies and public education on middle school students' academic achievement. Participants were 6389 (boys 3287, girls 3102) middle school students from the 2005 data of the Korea Education Longitudinal Study. Results were as follows : (1) there were significant differences among different schools in middle school students' academic achievement, i.e. 20% of variance in English achievement and 15% of variance in mathematics achievement were explained by school differences. (2) Students' elaboration and meta-cognitive strategy influenced academic achievement positively. (3) Predictor variables by ability grouping, supplementary class, and/or self-learning class had no significant effects on students' academic achievement.

  • Design optimization of layered plates bonding process is conducted by considering uncertainties in a manufacturing process, in order to reduce the crack failure arising due to the residual stress at the surface of the adherent which is caused by different thermal expansion coefficients. Robust optimization is peformed to minimize the mean as well as its variance of the residual stress, while constraining the distortion as well as the instantaneous maximum stress under the allowable reliability limits. In this optimization, the dimension reduction (DR) method is employed to quantify the reliability such as mean and variance of the layered plate bonding. It is expected that the DR method benefits the optimization from the perspectives of efficiency, accuracy, and simplicity. The obtained robust optimal solution is verified by the Monte Carlo simulation.

  • For quality improvement, Taguchi emphasizes the reduction of variation of the quality characteristic, Taguchi has used the signal-to-noise ratios for achieving minimum dispersion of the quality characteristic with its location adjusted to some desired target value ${\tau}$ Lim(1994) proposes a reasonable SN ratio based on a linking relationship of the variance and mean through simple data analysis technique. In this paper we investigate the efficiency of those two SN ratios and variance stabilizing transformations through Monte Carlo Simulations.

  • The central composite design is widely used in the response surface analysis, because it can fit the second order model with small experimental points. In practice, the experimental data are not always obtained on all the points. When there are missing observations, many problems due to the missing cells can occur. In this paper, the influence of a missing cell on the central composite design is discussed. First, the influences of a missing cell on the variances of estimated regression coefficents are compared as $\alpha$ varies. Second, how the average predition variance is affected by a missing sell is discussed. And the influence on rotatability is investigated. Third, the influence of a missing cell on optimality, especially on D-optimality and A-optimality, is examined.

  • In the cluster analysis, Hotelling's $T^2$ can be used to estimate the unknown number of clusters based on the idea of multiple comparison procedure. Especially, its threshold is obtained according to the probability of committing the type one error. Examples are used to compare Hotelling's $T^2$ with other classical location test statistics such as Sum-of-Squared Error and Wilks' $\Lambda$ The hierarchical clustering is used to reveal the underlying structure of the data. Also related criteria are reviewed in view of both the between variance and the within variance.

  • Somatotype is a very important factor for the comfortable and safe work environments. Many researches are trying to find the characteristics of somatotype according to age. Thus, the main objective of this study is to analyze somatotype of male residents in Seoul. The data used in this study included 267 men subjects who are living in Seoul. In order to analyze a detailed somatotype of citizens, age groups are divided into six groups. In order to compare and analyze data, Coefficient of Variance, Cronbach's Alpha, $R\ddot{o}hrer$ Index and Drop Value were used in this study. The results of this study can be applied to the comfortable and safe work environments for workers.

  • Generally speaking, power transformations such as Box-Cox transformation(1964) is applied for variance stabilization and symmetry. But, when the distribution of the original data has a large mean with a small variance or the coefficient of variation is very small, they don't work at all. This paper propose a simple method to introduce a shift parameter before applying power transformations and showed the numerical evidence by Monte Carlo simulation and a real data analysis.

  • The stochastic variations were analyzed periodicity by autocorrelation, variance spectrum and Fourier series. These time series included hourly and hourly mean observations on DO, water temperature and air temperature which measured by automatic recording instrument at Guii from 1, Jan., 1986 to 23, Feb., 1986. The results of study were as follows: l. Autocorrelation coef. (lag time 120) DO($\varrho_1$= 0.9705), WT($\varrho_1$ = 0.9890), and AT($\varrho_1$ = 0.9874) were deeply related. DO and AT clearly showedr 24-hour periodicities while WT showed 23-26 hour periodicity. 2. Spectral density showed high at 24 hour in eech item and all of them showed weak peak at 12 hour. 3. The explained variance, which was a measure of the contribution of periodic function to the original time series, varied high 90.8 - 94.7%. This results showed that water qualities at Guii were affected deterministic components.

  • The method of generalized estimating equations(GEE) is widely used in the analysis of a correlated dataset that consists of repeatedly observed responses within subjects. The GEE uses a quasi-likelihood equations to find the parameter estimates without assuming a specific distribution for the correlated responses. In this paper we study the importance of specifying the working correlation structure appropriately in fitting GEE for correlated counts data. We investigate the empirical coverages of confidence intervals for the regression coefficients according to four kinds of working correlations where one structure should be specified by the users. The confidence intervals are computed based on the asymptotic normality and the sandwich variance estimator.

  • In this paper, a non-coherent code tracking loop is designed for 3GPP HSDPA MODEM and its performance is analyzed in terms of steady-state jitter variance and transient response characteristics. Analytical closed-form formula for steady-state jitter variance is first derived for AWGN environments as a function of pulse-shaping filter, timing offset, signal-to-interference ratio, and loop bandwidth. Also obtained is the transient response characteristic of a tracking loop. Finally, the performance of the designed tracking loop is confirmed by computer simulations.
