  • This study attempted to develop a valid and reliable instrument capable of measuring Korea midlife family resilience (The Korea Midlife Family Resilience Scale: KMFRS). An exploratory, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and quantitative design was used to develop and validate the KMFRS. A tentative factor structure of family resilience and an item pool of the scale were constructed through a comprehensive literature review and personal interview. The pilot study was conducted with 424 middle aged adults(40~59) to select items for a scale, resulting in a preliminary scale composed of 70 items. In the main study, the preliminary scale was administered to a national representative sample of 562 middle-aged Korean adults. The scale was filtered into 40 items by the item analysis and an exploratory factor analysis, resulting in 6 factors: Family Connectedness & Problem Solving, Family's Positive Perception of Adversity, Family's Economic Stability, Family Religion & Spirituality, Support of Extended Family, and Support of Friends & Neighbors. These 6 factors explained 61.82% of total variance. The findings of the current study indicate substantial support for the reliability and the validity of the KMFRS. Other challenges and suggestions for future research on family resilience scale are discussed.

  • Astragalus, a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine, has exhibited antitumor actions in patients. In this study, in vitro and in vivo antitumor effects of astragalus and synergistic antitumor efficacy in combination with pterostilbene were investigated. Melanoma cells were treated with pterostilbene (Pt), graduated doses of astragalus injection (AI), or these in combination. Cell viability was measured using a MTT assay. Released nucleosomes and caspase activity were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Growth inhibition in vitro and in vivo was also assessed. Analysis of variance and t tests were used for statistical analysis. Significant reduction (p<0.05) in cellular proliferation were observed with AI and AI-Pt in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. Apoptosis and caspase-3/7 activity were significantly increased by AI and AI-Pt treatment (p<0.05). In vivo, AI inhibited melanoma tumor growth, with inhibition rates ranging from 36.5 to 62.3%, by inducing apoptosis via up-regulation Bax expression and the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and down-regulating Bcl-2 expression. AI significantly inhibits the growth of melanoma in vitro and in vivo by inducing apoptosis. These data suggest that combined treatment of astragalus with pterostilbene enhances antitumor efficacy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and test the psychometric properties of the newly developed instrument, Meaning in Life, for elderly Korean people. Methods: Ten older adults participated in the qualitative research used to develop the initial items. Participants for the psychometric testing were 371 community-dwelling older adults. Validity and reliability analyses included content, construct, and criterion-related validities, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. Results: The Meaning in Life Scale consisted of 12 items with three distinct factors; value of life, source of life, and will to live, which explained 86.7% of the total variance. A three-factor structure was validated by confirmatory factor analysis. Criterion-related validity was supported by comparison with the Purpose in Life Test (r=.74). Reliabilities were secured with test-retest reliability of Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) .85 and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient .90. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that this instrument is useful to measure meaning in life in Korean elders.

  • This paper presents an analysis of the performance degradation of coefficient approximation and frequency deviation in phase measurement algorithm based on Sliding-DFT. The analytic derivation is based on the statistics of the error dynamic equation that describes the error propagation of the recursion. The analysis result is intended to obtain a closed-form equation of error variance in terms of the number of bits used in coefficient approximation, the length of the DFT data block, and noise. It is verified with data obtained from the computer simulations.

  • This paper examines some properties of concrete, such as strength, oxygen permeability and sorptivity using starch [cassava (CA) and maize (MS)] as admixtures. Concrete cubes containing different percentages of the CA and MS by weight of cement (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 %) were cast. Compressive strength tests were carried out after 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 56, 90, 180, 270 and 365 days of curing. Oxygen permeability and sorptivity tests were carried out on another set of concrete specimens with the same percentages of starch at 7, 28, 90, 180, 270 and 365 days. Oxygen permeability and sorptivity tests data obtained were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance by ranks. The strength increase after 1 year over the control for CA 0.5 and CA 1.0 are 2.7 and 3.8 % respectively, while MS 0.5 and MS 1.0 gave 1.5 % increase over control. These results showed a decrease in oxygen permeability and rates of sorptivity, with concretes containing starch as admixtures giving better performance than the control concretes.
