Metal pipes are used in a wide range of applications, from plumbing systems of large construction sites to small devices such as medical tools. When a liquid is enforced to flow through a metal pipe, a higher flow rate is beneficial for higher efficiency. Using high pressures can enhance the flow rate yet can be harmful for medical applications. Thus, we consider an optimal geometrical design to increase the flow rate in medical devices. In this study, we focus on cannulas, which are widely used small metal pipes for surgical procedures, such as liposuction. We characterize the internal flow rate driven by a negative pressure and explore its dependence on the key design parameters. We quantitatively analyze the suction characteristics for each design variable by conducting computational fluid dynamics simulations. In addition, we build a suction performance measurement system which enables the translational motion of cannulas with pre-programmed velocity for experimental validation. The inner diameter, section geometry, and hole configuration are the design factors to be evaluated. The effect of the inner diameter dominates over that of section geometry and hole configuration. In addition, the circular tube shape provides the maximum flow rate among the elliptical geometries. Once the flow rate exceeds a critical value, the rate becomes independent of the number and width of the suction holes. Finally, we introduce a slippery liquid-infused nanoporous surface (SLIPS) coating using nanoparticles and hydrophobic lubricants that effectively improves the flow rate and antifouling property of cannulas without altering the geometrical design parameter.
This paper is an extension of previous study[1] on a development of a divergence-free element method using a hermite interpolated stream function. Divergence-free velocity bases defined on rectangles derived herein produce pointwise divergence-free flow fields. Hence the explicit imposition of continuity constraint is not necessary and the Galerkin finite element formulation for velocities does not involve the pressure. The divergence-free element of the previous study employed hermite (serendipity) cubic for interpolation of stream function, and it has been noted a possible discontinuity in variables along element interfaces. This deficiency can be removed by use of a hermite bicubic interpolated stream function, which requires four degrees-of-freedom at each element corners. Those degrees-of-freedom are the unknown variable, its x- and y-derivatives and its cross derivative. Detailed derivations are presented for both solenoidal and irrotational basis functions from the hermite bicubic interpolated stream function. Numerical tests are performed on the lid-driven cavity flow, and results are compared with those from hermite serendipity cubics and a stabilized finite element method by Illinca et al[2].

Heat transfer characteristics of the laminar oscillating flow in a circular pipe have been studied under the condition that the wall temperature of the pipe is distributed sinusoidally with the axial direction. The axial velocity was assumed to be uniform in radial direction and the temperature field was analyzed by means of the perturbation method. The results show that the difference between wall and section-time-averaged fluid temperature increases as the oscillating frequency increases and eventually converges to a constant value which is determined by the ratio of swept distance to the characteristic length of wall temperature distribution. Also it is shown that the dominant variable in the heat transfer process when swept distance ratio is greater than 1 is not thermal Womersley number(F) but thermal Womersley number multiplied by the square root of swept distance ratio. The variation of the time-averaged Nusselt number is obtained as a function of F. The results indicate that Nusselt number is proportional to $F_{\epsilon}^{1/2}$ when both of F and .epsilon. are much greater than 1.

The elliptic relaxation model(ERM) with the inhomogeneous correction intermediate between near wall with and far from the wall. The source of the ERM usually was appled quasi-homogeneous pressure-strain correlation in homogeneous situations. This formulation was easily applied to the linear model or non-linear pressure-strain model. It is observed that the boundary conditions of the relaxation operator dominate the homogeneous pressure-strain model in the near wall region. While looking at high-Reynolds number flows, it was found necessary to modify the effect of the relaxation operator throughout the log region by accounting for gradients of the flatness variable and turbulent length scales. These effects are kinematic blocking of the wall normal velocity fluctuation and pressure reflections from the surface. This model is wall distances and unit vectors which make the model applicable to flows boundary by a complex geometry. Inhomogeneous correction model is computed inertial and non-inertial channel flow These are compared DNS(Kim et at., Kristofffrsen & Andersson) for channel flow. The present model could be predicted well for rotating flows.
Flow of electrically conducting nanofluids is of pivotal importance in countless industrial and medical appliances. Fluctuations in thermophysical properties of such fluids due to variations in temperature have not received due attention in the available literature. Present investigation aims to fill this void by analyzing the flow of copper-water nanofluid with temperature dependent viscosity past a Riga plate. Strong wall suction and viscous dissipation have also been taken into account. Numerical solutions for the resulting nonlinear system have been obtained. Results are presented in the graphical and tabular format in order to facilitate the physical analysis. An estimated expression for skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number are obtained by performing linear regression on numerical data for embedded parameters. Results indicate that the temperature dependent viscosity alters the velocity as well as the temperature of the nanofluid and is of considerable importance in the processes where high accuracy is desired. Addition of copper nanoparticles makes the momentum boundary layer thinner whereas viscosity parameter does not affect the boundary layer thickness. Moreover, the regression expressions indicate that magnitude of rate of change in effective skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number with respect to nanoparticles volume fraction is prominent when compared with the rate of change with variable viscosity parameter and modified Hartmann number.

The stratified flow can be seen in the oil and gas pipelines as well as pipelines related to ship's fluid machineries. Numerous theories and correlations have also been proposed in the past for the prediction of stratified flow in horizontal or slightly inclined pipe. The previous researches are mostly about the effects of physical properties, viscosity, phases densities and pipe geometries on the stratified flow. Very few study outcomes exist on the effect of gravity magnitude and large slop angle of pipe inclinations on the occurring condition of stratified flow. In this study, therefore, analytical procedures were conducted about the effect of both the change in the gravity magnitude and pipe inclinations on the stratified flow occurring conditions. From the analytical results, it was found that stratified flow occurred at the vertical upward inclination and at very low liquid phase flowrates in 0.17g and 0.33g conditions.
In membrane bio-reactor (MBR), the aeration control is one of the important independent variables to decrease fouling and to save energy with shear stress change on the membrane surface. The paper was carried out for numerical simulation of 3-dimensional fluid flow phenomena of the cylindrical bioreactor with submerged flat membranes equipped in the center and supplied the air from the bottom by using the COMSOL program. The viscosity and temperature of solution were assumed to be constant, and the specific air demand based on permeate volume ($SAD_p$) defined as scouring air per permeate rates was used as a variable. The calculated CFD velocities were compared with those of the velocity meter measurement and video image analysis, respectively. The results were good agreement each other within 11% error. For fluid flow in the reactor the liquid velocity increased rapidly between the air diffuser and membrane module, but the velocity decreased during flowing of the membrane module. Also, the velocity increased as it was near from the reactor wall to the central axis. The calculated shear stress on the membrane surface showed the highest value at the center part of the module bottom side and increased as aeration rate increased. Especially, the wall shear stress increased dramatically as the aeration rate increased from 0.15 to 0.25 L/min.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate near-wake characteristics of an elliptic airfoil oscillating in pitch. The airfoil was sinusoidally pitched about the half chord point between $-5^{\circ}C$ and $+25^{\circ}C$ angles of attack at the freestream velocities of 3.4 and 23.1 m/s The corresponding Reynolds numbers based on the chord length were $3.3{\times}10^4$ and $2.2{\times}10^5$, respectively. A hot-wire anemometer was used to measure the near-wake flow variable at the reduced frequency of 0.1. Ensemble-averaged velocity and turbulence intensity profile were presented to examine the near-wake characteristics depending on the Reynolds number. The axial velocity deficit in the near-wake region tend to decrease with the increase in the Reynolds number a found in many stationary airfoil test . Turbulence intensity in the near-wake region have a tendency to decrease with the increase in the Reynolds number during the pitch-up motion, whereas it shows different feature during the pitch-down motion either the laminar boundary layer or turbulent boundary layer separation.
