In HEVC, motion estimation is performed independently for each variable block size. So it requires several times of search window data, and also it is difficult to exploit early termination. In this paper, a new method is proposed to exploit search window data and early termination in variable block size. When applied to TZS algorithm, it reduces pixel comparison and search window data accesses to 1/3.7 ~ 1/2.9 with negligible image quality degradation.

This paper proposes an automatic variable block truncation coding (BTC) method. It selects the block size automatically based on the mode of the discontinutiy measure of blocks. The combination of an automatic block-size determination scheme and the conventional BTC results in the proposed automatic variable BTC techniques. For color images, subsampling in I and Q chrominance components is adopted along with the variable BTC. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, its simulation results are compared to those of the several conventional BTC algorithms for monochrome and color test images. Computer simulation shows that the proposed algorithm gives better performance than the conventional ones based on the subjective and objective performance evaluation.
It is possible to improve the accuracy of the motion estimation for a video by applying a variable block size. However, it has limits in the zoom motion estimation. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the zoom motion with variable block size. The proposed method separates the background within the object picture by depth information obtained from a depth camera, and only the object regions are applied to zoom scale, but the background is not applied. In addition, the object regions select efficiently variable block size mode in consideration of the generated motion vectors and the accuracy of motion estimation at the same time. Simulation results show the accuracy of the motion estimation and the number of motion vectors for the proposed method. It is verified that the proposed method can reduce the number of motion while maintaining the similar accuracy of motion estimation than the conventional motion estimation methods.

Corrected Block TEA(or XXTEA) is a block cipher designed to correct security weakness in the original block TEA in 1998. In this paper, XXTEA cipher hardware which can encrypt or decrypt between 64-bit and 256-bit messages using 128-bit master key is implemented. Minimum message block size is 64-bit wide and maximal message block size is 256-bit wide. The designed XXTEA can encrypt and decrypt variable-length message blocks which are some arbitrary multiple of 32 bits in message block sizes. XXTEA core of this paper is described using Verilog-HDL and downloaded on Vertex4. The operation frequency is 177MHz. The maximum throughput for 64-bit message blocks is 174Mbps and that of 256-bit message blocks is 467Mbps. The cryptographic IP of this paper is applicable as security module of the mobile areas such as smart card, internet banking, e-commerce and IoT.
Most existing facial expression recognition methods use a uniform grid method that divides the entire facial image into uniform blocks when describing facial features. The problem of this method may include non-face backgrounds, which interferes with discrimination of facial expressions, and the feature of a face included in each block may vary depending on the position, size, and orientation of the face in the input image. In this paper, we propose a variable-size block method which determines the size and position of a block that best represents meaningful facial expression change. As a part of the effort, we propose the way to determine the optimal number, position and size of each block based on the facial feature points. For the evaluation of the proposed method, we generate the facial feature vectors using LDTP and construct a facial expression recognition system based on SVM. Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to conventional uniform grid based method. Especially, it shows that the proposed method can adapt to the change of the input environment more effectively by showing relatively better performance than exiting methods in the images with large shape and orientation changes.
Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have slow responses, so motion blurs are often perceived in fast moving scenes. To reduce this motion blur, we propose a novel method of robust motion compensated frame interpolation (MCFI) based on bidirectional motion estimation (BME) and weight-overlapped block motion compensation (WOBMC) with variable block sizes. In most MCFI methods, a static block size is used, so some block artefacts and motion blurs are observed. However, the proposed method adjusts motion block sizes and search ranges by comparing matching scores, so the precise motion vectors can be estimated in accordance with motions. In the MCFI, overlapping ranges for WOBMC are also determined by adjusted block sizes, so the accurate MCFI can be performed. In the experimental results, the proposed method strongly reduced motion blurs arisen from large motions, and yielded interpolated images with high visual performance and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

This paper introduces three efficient frame selection schemes to reduce the computation complexity for the multi-reference and variable block size Motion Estimation (ME). The proposed RSP (Reference Selection Pass) scheme can minimize the overhead of frame selection. The MFS (Modified Frame Selection) scheme can reduce the number of search points about 18% compared with existing schemes considering the motion of image during the reference frame selection process. In addition, the TPRFS (Two Pass Reference frame Selection) scheme can minimize the frame selection operation for the variable block size ME in H.264/AVC using the character of selected reference frame according to the block size. The simulation results show the proposed schemes can save up to 50% of the ME computation without degradation of image Qualify. Because the proposed schemes can be separated from the block matching process, they can be used with any existing single reference fast search algorithms.
In this paper, we propose a fast variable-size block matching algorithm for motion estimation based on bit-pattern. Motion estimation in the proposed algorithm is performed after the representation of image sequence is transformed 8bit pixel values into 1bit ones depending on the mean value of search block, which brings a short searching time by reducing the computational complexity. Moreover, adaptive searching methods according to the motion information of the block make the procedure of motion estimation efficient by eliminating an unnecessary searching of low motion block and deepening a searching procedure in high motion block. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides better performance-0.5dB PSNR improvement-than full search block matching algorithm with a fixed block size.

VariableBlock Matching algorithm is effective for the estimation of motion vector at complexor edge region by means of using variable block size with respect to the image block. But since VBM algorithm requires considerable number of operations, to solve this problem, we present an algorithm which uses difference images and quad tree structure, and estimates motion using various fast block matching algorithms.

The conventional block-based compressed sensing uses a fixed block size for signal reconstruction, and the reconstructed signal is degraded because the block size suitable to the signal characteristics is not used. To solve this problem, in this paper, a variable block size method for compressed sensing is proposed that estimates the signal characteristics and selects a proper block size for each frame, thereby improving the quality of the reconstructed signal. The proposed method reconstructs the signal with different block sizes, analyzes the signal characteristics using correlation coefficients for each frame, and select the block size for the frame. It is confirmed that, with the same acquired data, the proposed method reconstructs the signal of higher quality than the conventional fixed block size method.
