This study investigated the explosion characteristics of HCNG fuel using a simulation tool. The damage caused by the storage container explosion and vapor cloud explosion in a gas station was predicted. In case of an vapor cloud explosion in the HCNG station, 50~200kPa explosion pressure was predicted inside the station. When the cylinder explosion was occurred, in case of hydrogen, the measured influential distance of overpressure was 59m and radiant heat was 75m. In case of CNG, influential distance of overpressure was 89m and radiant heat was 144m would be estimated. In case of 30% HCNG that was blended with hydrogen and CNG, influential distance of overpressure was 81m and radiant heat was 130m were measured. The damage distance that explosive overpressure and radiant heat influenced CNG was seen as the highest. HCNG that was placed between CNG and hydrogen tended to be seen as more similar with CNG.

The characteristics of local climate in the vicinity of Duckyang Bay have been investigated with the analysis of the surface observation data of Gohug District and the aerological data of Kwangju. In principal features of local climate, the annual range in temperature appeared identical with the mean value(24~$25^{\circ}C$) of the south coastal area, and evaporation from April to September was likely less than precipitation. The average speed of surface wind in Summer seemed higher than in other seasons on account of wea breeze. Relative humidity was 74%, annual average. In the mean cloud cover Summer(6.4) showed greater deal of amount than Winter(4.2). Duration of sunshine was the longest in May(268.4hrs), while the shortest in February(188.4hrs). The amount of the precipitable water was the greatest in July, whereas the least in January, and in Summer the greatest, in Autumn the second greatest, and in Spring the third greatest, and in Winter the least in consideration of seasonal orders. The Summer deviation was most remarkable around all sides. The direction of vector wind appeared the most changeable on the earth surface. At an altitude of 300mb all the winds blew west around all months. Moreover, water vapor transport was measured to be the greatest in Summer; while the least in Winter. So was the deviation of water vapor transport. And lastly frequency of occurrence of days in which a little cloud appeared(less than 5/10) was high except for Summer, when northerly winds blew; while frequency of occurrence of day plenty of clouds floated was outstandingly high at the time of strong southerly winds.
Experimental and analytical investigations are performed to explore the explosion characteristics of a hydrogen-air mixture in open atmosphere. A hydrogen-air mixture tent of total volume of 27 m3, with 40% hydrogen volume, is used to observe overpressure at a distance from the ignition source. Vapor cloud explosion analyses are performed using the TNO multi-energy model and Baker-Strehlow-Tang model. The results of these analyses are compared with experiment done from this study and references. The experimental results with and without obstacles indicate that the overpressure values measured at a distance of 4.5-21.5 m from the ignition source are about 9.4-3.6 kPa and 6.5-2 kPa, respectively. This implies that the overpressure with obstacles is approximately 1.7 times greater than that without obstacles. Analytical observation indicates that the results obtained with the Baker-Strehlow-Tang model with Mf = 0.2-0.35 are in good agreement with those of most of the previous studies, including that obtained from this study. Moreover, the TNO multi-energy model with a volume of 27 m3 well predicts the overpressure obtained from this study. Further studies should considered explosions in semi-confined spaces, which is more suitable for hydrogen refueling stations.
With the increase of risk of gas explosion, various methods for indirectly estimating the explosion paramaters, which are required for the prediction of gas explosion scale and impact. In this study, the characteristics of the most frequently used methods such as TNT equivalent method, TNO multi-energy method, and BST method and the processes for determining the parameters of the methods were compared. In the case of TNT equivalent method, an adequate selection of the efficiency factor for various conditions such as the type of vapor cloud explosion and explosion material is needed. There is no objective guidelines for the selection of class number in TNO multi-energy method and it is not possible to estimate negative overpressure. It was found that there were some mistakes in the reported parameter values and suggested corrected values. BST method provides more detailed guidelines for the estimation of the explosion parameters including negative overpressure, but the graphs used in this methods are not clear. In order to overcome the problem, the graphs were redrawn. A more convenient estimation of explosion parameters with the numerical expression of the redrawn graphs will be available in the future.
This study presents spatial characteristics of cloud using satellite image in the extreme heavy snowfall of the Yeongdong region. 3 extreme heavy snowfall events in the Yeongdong region during the recent 12 years (2001 ~ 2012) are selected for which the fresh snow cover exceed 50 cm/day. Spatial characteristics (minimum brightness temperature; Tmin, cloud size, center of cloud-cell) of cloud are analyzed by tracking main cloud-cell related with these events. These characteristics are compared with radar precipitation in the Yeongdong region to investigate relationship between cloud and precipitation. The results are summarized as follows, selected extreme heavy snowfall events are associated with the isolated, well-developed, and small-scale convective cloud which is developing over the Yeongdong region or moving from over East Korea Bay to the Yeongdong region. During the period of main precipitation, cloud-cell Tmin is low ($-40{\sim}-50^{\circ}C$) and cloud area is small (17,000 ~ 40,000 $km^2$). Precipitation area (${\geq}$ 0.5 mm/hr) from radar also shows small and isolated shape (4,000 ~ 8,000 $km^2$). The locations of the cloud and precipitation are similar, but in there centers are located closely to the coast of the Yeongdong region. In all events the extreme heavy snowfall occur in the period a developed cloud-cell was moving into the coastal waters of the Yeongdong. However, it was found that developing stage of cloud and precipitation are not well matched each other in one of 3 events. Water vapor image shows that cloud-cell is developed on the northern edge of the dry(dark) region. Therefore, at the result analyzed from cloud and precipitation, selected extreme heavy snowfall events are associated with small-scale secondary cyclone or vortex, not explosive polar low. Detection and tracking small-scale cloud-cell in the real-time forecasting of the Yeongdong extreme heavy snowfall is important.

The ozone concentration is one of the important environmental issue for measurement of the atmospheric condition of the country. This study focuses on applying the Autoregressive Error (ARE) model for analyzing the ozone data at middle part of the Gyeonggi-Do, Anyang monitoring site in Korea. In the ARE model, eight meteorological variables and four pollution variables are used as the explanatory variables. The eight meteorological variables are daily maximum temperature, wind speed, amount of cloud, global radiation, relative humidity, rainfall, dew point temperature, and water vapor pressure. The four air pollution variables are sulfur dioxide $(SO_2)$, nitrogen dioxide $(NO_2)$, carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter 10 (PM10). The result shows that ARE models both overall and monthly data are suited for describing the oBone concentration. In the ARE model for overall ozone data, ozone concentration can be explained about 71% to by the PM10, global radiation and wind speed. Also the four types of ARE models for high level of ozone data (over 80 ppb) have been analyzed. In the best ARE model for high level of ozone data, ozone can be explained about 96% by the PM10, daliy maximum temperature, and cloud amount.
Quantifying the solute composition of a cloud droplet (or a whole droplet) is an important task for understanding formation processes and heating/cooling rates. In this study, a combination of droplet fixation and SR-XRF microprobe analysis was used to visualize and quantify elements in a micro-scale droplet. In this study, we report the preliminary outcome of this experiment. A spherical micro-scale droplet was successfully solidified through exposure to ${\alpha}$-cyano-acrylate vapor without affecting its size or shape. An X-ray microprobe system equipped at the beam line 37XU of Super Photon ring 8 GeV (SPring-8) was applied to visualize and quantify the elemental composition in an individual micro-scale droplet. It was possible to reconstruct 2D elemental maps for the K and Cl contained in a microdroplet that was dispensed from the 10-ppm KCl standard solution. Multi-elemental peaks corresponding to X-ray energy were also successfully resolved. Further experiments to determine quantitative measures of elemental mass in individual droplets and high-resolution X-ray microtomography (i.e., 3D elemental distribution) are planned for the future.
Conventional methods for measuring winds provide wind velocity observations over limited area and time period. The use of satellite imagery for measuring wind velocity overcomes some of these limitations by providing wide area and near condinuous coverage. And its accurate depiction is essential for operational weather forecasting and for initialization of NWP models. GMS-5 provides full disk images at hourly intervals. At four times each day - 0500, 1100, 1700, 2300 hours UTC-a series of three images is received, separated by thirty minutes, centered at the four times. The current wind system generates winds from sets of 3 infrared(IR) images, separated by an hour, four times a day. It also produces visible(VIS) and water vapor(WV) image-based winds from half-hourly imagery four times a day. The derivation of wind from satellite imagery involves the identification of suitable cloud targets. tracking the targets on sequential images, associating a pressure height with the derived wind vector, and quality control. The aim of this research is to incorporate imagery from other available spectral channels and examine the error characteristics of winds derived from these images.

Contrail is a kind of cloud that is formed during the flight by vapor condensation of engine exhaust in a cold atmospheric condition. Owing to the negative effects of contrails on the environment and in military applications, several studies for contrail mitigation had been performed in developed countries. The goal of this research is to design a lab-scale contrail generator, and to validate the contrail mitigation technology suggested by previous studies. The contrail generator was made using superheated vapor and a low temperature wind tunnel. Using this generator, the ineffectiveness of ethanol and surfactant suggested in the previous paper on contrail mitigation was found experimentally.
Precipitable water vapor (PWV) derived from a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model were compared to observations derived from ground-based Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. The model data compared were from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model short-range forecasts on nested grids. The numerical experimets were performed by selecting the cloud microphysics schemes and for the comparisons, the Changma period of 2008 was selected. The observational data were derived from GPS measurements at 9-sites in South Korea over a 1-month period, in the middle of June-July 2008. In general, the WRF model demonstrated considerable skill in reproducing the temporal and spatial evolution of the PWV as depicted by the GPS estimations. The correlation between forecasts and GPS estimates of PWV depreciated slowly with increasing forecast times. Comparing simulations with a resolution of 18 km and 6 km showed no obvious PWV dependence on resolution. Besides, GPS and the model PWV data were found to be in quite good agreement with data derived from radiosondes. These results indicated that the GPS-derived PWV data, with high temporal and spatial resolution, are very useful for meteorological applications.
