A Study on Evaluation Criteria of VMS User's Utility in Urban Roads (도시부도로 VMS 이용자 효용의 평가기준에 관한 연구)

  • At present, the number of local governments using the Traffic Information Center are increasing and drivers are utilizing its traffic information from VMS installed on roads in cities. However, the cases of the user's utility of VMS about urban roads with special characteristics different from expressways and urban highways haven't been evaluated so far. Because VMS is a medium installed from a budget to provide traffic information, it is necessary to evaluate and manage the efficiency of users. This study judged that the efficiency of the drivers using VMS of urban roads most influences the duty on alternative route information provision so that it established its evaluation criteria. In addition, it needs to raise its value by many drivers' observation of VMS. Therefore, in case of the same conditions, the installation location of VMS should be a road section with much traffic volume so its the evaluation criteria was established. At present, the study results can be utilized to raise the user's utility of VMS installed in the urban roads.

Development of Legibility Distance Model for VMS Messages using In-Vehicle DGPS Data (DGPS를 이용한 VMS 메시지 판독거리 모형개발)

  • Variable message sign (VMS), which is used for providing real-time information on traffic conditions and incidents, is one of the important components of intelligent transportation systems. VMS messages need to meet the requirements with the consideration of human factors that messages should be readable and understandable while driving. This study developed a legibility distance model for VMS messages using in-vehicle differential global positioning data (DGPS). Traffic conditions, highway geometric conditions, and VMS message characteristics were investigated for establishing the legibility model based on multiple linear regression analysis. The height of VMS characters, speed, and the number of lanes were identified as dominant factors affecting the variation of legibility distances. It is expected that the proposed model would play a significant role in designing VMS messages for providing more effective real-time traffic information.

A Study of Driver's Response to Variable Message Sign Using Evolutionary Game Theory (진화 게임을 이용한 VMS 정보에 따른 운전자의 행태 연구)

  • An objective of VMS(Variable Message Signs) is to make transportation system effective specifically for driver's path selection. The traffic solutions including a VMS problem can be modeled through Game Theory, however, the majority of the studies can not model various driver's response according to VMS information in game theory. So, this paper tries to analyze a driver's response according to VMS traffic informations through evolutionary game theory. We apply a behavior characteristics of driver to evolutionary game theory, then finds drivers are only accepting in case of the biggest pay-off, and if a traffic flow finds a balance over time, ratio of accepting information is converged as an evolutionary stable state gradually. Consequently, the strategy of the other drivers such as traffic problems can not be predicted accurately. In case, drivers repeat between groups and reasonable judgment by the experience, we expect that VMS can provide strategic information through evolutionary game theory.

  • VMS which provides information about real-time traffic situation to the drivers is operating 41 places in 204km section at 2003 present time. Contrary to VMS which is constructed in freeway or highway, VMS in Roadway is increasing the demand of relocating according to development of environment. However there is not any definite standard for ITS field devices' relocating. That would be many problem such as re-relocating in the near future. This study presents optimal VMS relocating methodology using the concept of Decision Problem considering budget and number of drivers given information.

  • Traffic information provision plays an important role in increasing the efficiency of network operation and in providing convenience for roadway users. As a typical device for disseminating real-time traffic information for collective general public, VMS is a prevalent device nowadays and it is being expanded. However, the actual monetary value of traffic information is not quantified up to now. The previous studies regarding VMS traffic information are mainly focused on the behavioral aspects of road users such as departure time and route choices under traffic information provision conditions. This paper tried to estimate the monetary value of VMS traffic information using discrete choice theory and logit model through the stated preference study(SP). The methodological framework adopted in this paper can also be used in evaluating the monetary value of other traffic information providers including PDA, CNS, and mobile phone.

The Influence of Traffic Information based on VMS(Variable Message Sign) on the Selection of Drivers' Route (VMS(Variable Message Sign)를 통한 교통정보 제공이 운전자의 운행경로 전환에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • The provision of traffic information plays an important role in increasing social benefit not only by saving travel time for individuals but also by improving the efficiency of road operation. VMS(Variable Message Sign) helps on-wheel drivers easily understand the road situation, and also provides real-time traffic information to people on the streets. However, it has not been sufficiently studied on how traffic information based on VMS influences on the drivers' selection of route. This study investigated how drivers use VMS traffic information and how they are satisfied with it. Then, the model of drivers' route selection was specified with the types of traffic information and the expected travel time to examine the influence on the selection of drivers' route. The model was estimated and analyzed in three types according to the condition of detour roads, and the rate of route change and the degree of sensitivity was calculated from the estimation. The results of analysis are as follows. the $1^{st}$ type model showed the 10% of route change for the travel time saving of 5minutes, and the 81.6% of route change for the travel time saving of 20minutes. The $2^{nd}$ type led to the range of route change from 14.2% to 92.7% over the 5 through 20 minutes of travel time saving. The $3^{rd}$ model resulted in the 99.1% of route change. The sensitivity of route change showed the highest for the travel time saving of 11 minutes with the $1^{st}$ type model, 9 minutes with the $2^{nd}$ type model, and 5 minutes with the $3^{rd}$ type model respectively.

  • Cloud computing is an emerging technology based on the concept of enabling data access from anywhere, at any time, from any platform. The exponential growth of cloud users has resulted in the emergence of multiple issues, such as the workload imbalance between the virtual machines (VMs) of data centers in a cloud environment greatly impacting its overall performance. Our axis of research is the load balancing of a data center's VMs. It aims at reducing the degree of a load's imbalance between those VMs so that a better resource utilization will be provided, thus ensuring a greater quality of service. Our article focuses on two phases to balance the workload between the VMs. The first step will be the determination of the threshold of each VM before it can be considered overloaded. The second step will be a task allocation to the VMs by relying on an improved and faster version of the meta-heuristic "simulated annealing (SA)". We mainly focused on the acceptance probability of the SA, as, by modifying the content of the acceptance probability, we could ensure that the SA was able to offer a smart task distribution between the VMs in fewer loops than a classical usage of the SA.

  • Drivers need lots of information when they drive on the highway, however it is necessary and important to be provided information which is appropriate formation. In order to offer the suitable information, adequate size, quantity, and frequency of provided information are required for the drivers. To evaluate propriety of the expressed message of VMS that provides real-time traffic conditions, first of all, the amount of message about legibility distance and viewing should be estimated. In this research, drivers' characteristics of VMS message design were also reviewed to enhance the efficiency of VMS. And legibility distance, the amount of viewing information, and ratio of viewing information were analyzed on the currently operating VMS. The results of this study proposed that the appropriate size, quantity, and frequency were concluded by the legibility and memory of message on the real driving conditions. Consequently, these design methods of VMS could be expected to improve the transmitting capability of highway information to drivers.
